2023 EBD: an eye biomarker database
abstract
MOTIVATION: Many ophthalmic disease biomarkers have been identified through comprehensive multiomics profiling, and hold significant potential in advancing the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of diseases. Meanwhile, the eye itself serves as a natural biomarker for several systemic diseases including neurological, renal, and cardiovascular systems. We aimed to collect and standardize this eye biomarkers information and construct the eye biomarker database (EBD) to provide ophthalmologists with a platform to search, analyze, and download these eye biomarker data. RESULTS: In this study, we present the EBD , a world-first online compilation comprising 889 biomarkers for 26 ocular diseases and 939 eye biomarkers for 181 systemic diseases. The EBD also includes the information of 78 "nonbiomarkers"-the objects that have been proven cannot be biomarkers. Biological function and network analysis were conducted for these ocular disease biomarkers, and several hub pathways and common network topology characteristics were newly identified, which may promote future ocular disease biomarker discovery and characterizes the landscape of biomarkers for eye diseases at the pathway and network level. The EBD is expected to yield broader utility among developmental biologists and clinical scientists in and outside of the eye field by assisting in the identification of biomarkers linked to eye disorders and related systemic diseases. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: EBD is available at http://www.eyeseeworld.com/ebd/index.html.

2022 Explainable Dynamic Multimodal Variational Autoencoder for the Prediction of Patients With Suspected Central Precocious Puberty
abstract
Central precocious puberty (CPP) is the most common type of precocious puberty and has a significant effect on children. A gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-stimulation test is the gold standard for confirming CPP. This test, however, is costly and unpleasant for patients. Therefore, it is critical to developing alternative methods for CPP diagnosis in order to alleviate patient suffering. This study aims to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic system for predicting response to the GnRH-stimulation test using data from laboratory tests, electronic health records (EHRs), and pelvic ultrasonography and left-hand radiography reports. The challenges are in integrating these multimodal features into a comprehensive deep learning model in order to achieve an accurate diagnosis while also accounting for the missing or incomplete modalities. To begin, we developed a dynamic multimodal variational autoencoder (DMVAE) that can exploit intrinsic correlations between different modalities to impute features for missing modalities. Next, we combined features from all modalities to predict the outcome of a CPP diagnosis. The experimental results (AUROC 0.9086) demonstrate that our DMVAE model is superior to standard methods. Additionally, we showed that by setting appropriate operating thresholds, clinicians could diagnose about two-thirds of patients with confidence (1.0 specificity). Only about one-third of patients require confirmation of their diagnoses using GnRH (or GnRH analog)-stimulation tests. To interpret the results, we implemented an explainer Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) to analyze the local and global feature attributions.

1994 Several Key Problems in Model-Based Image Sequence Compression by Using Interframe AUs Correlation
abstract
Model-based image coding has received much attention for it could gain a big compression ratio and well form the basis of very low bit rates visual transmissions. Many authors have contributed a lot to this area. However, some key problems are not well solved in practice. In this paper, the human face model and its invariant representation, textural mapping for natural synthesizing of facial images, the occlusion problem in the case of face rotation, real time automatic extraction of face feature points, and a better performance criteria suitable for facial expression analysis/synthesis are discussed. The results obtained by computer simulation are given.>
