2025 Time Reversal Symmetry for Efficient Robotic Manipulations in Deep Reinforcement Learning
abstract
Symmetry is pervasive in robotics and has been widely exploited to improve sample efficiency in deep reinforcement learning (DRL). However, existing approaches primarily focus on spatial symmetries—such as reflection, rotation, and translation—while largely neglecting temporal symmetries. To address this gap, we explore time reversal symmetry, a form of temporal symmetry commonly found in robotics tasks such as door opening and closing. We propose Time Reversal symmetry enhanced Deep Reinforcement Learning (TR-DRL), a framework that combines trajectory reversal augmentation and time reversal guided reward shaping to efficiently solve temporally symmetric tasks. Our method generates reversed transitions from fully reversible transitions, identified by a proposed dynamics-consistent filter, to augment the training data. For partially reversible transitions, we apply reward shaping to guide learning, according to successful trajectories from the reversed task. Extensive experiments on the Robosuite and MetaWorld benchmarks demonstrate that TR-DRL is effective in both single-task and multi-task settings, achieving higher sample efficiency and stronger final performance compared to baseline methods.

2024 Revisiting Data Augmentation in Deep Reinforcement Learning
abstract
Various data augmentation techniques have been recently proposed in image-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Although they empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of data augmentation for improving sample efficiency or generalization, which technique should be preferred is not always clear. To tackle this question, we analyze existing methods to better understand them and to uncover how they are connected. Notably, by expressing the variance of the Q-targets and that of the empirical actor/critic losses of these methods, we can analyze the effects of their different components and compare them. We furthermore formulate an explanation about how these methods may be affected by choosing different data augmentation transformations in calculating the target Q-values. This analysis suggests recommendations on how to exploit data augmentation in a more principled way. In addition, we include a regularization term called tangent prop, previously proposed in computer vision, but whose adaptation to DRL is novel to the best of our knowledge. We evaluate our proposition and validate our analysis in several domains. Compared to different relevant baselines, we demonstrate that it achieves state-of-the-art performance in most environments and shows higher sample efficiency and better generalization ability in some complex environments.

2022 DAENet: Making Strong Anonymity Scale in a Fully Decentralized Network
abstract
Traditional anonymous networks (e.g., Tor) are vulnerable to traffic analysis attacks that monitor the whole network traffic to determine which users are communicating. To preserve user anonymity against traffic analysis attacks, the emerging mix networks mess up the order of packets through a set of centralized and explicit shuffling nodes. However, this centralized design of mix networks is insecure against targeted DoS attacks that can completely block these shuffling nodes. In this article, we presentDAENet, an efficient mix network that resists both targeted DoS attacks and traffic analysis attacks with a new abstraction calledStealthy Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Network. Thestealthy P2P networkeffectively hides the shuffling nodes used in a routing path into the whole network, such that adversaries cannot distinguish specific shuffling nodes and conduct targeted DoS attacks to block these nodes. In addition, to handle traffic analysis attacks, we leverage the confidentiality and integrity protection of Intel SGX to ensure trustworthy packet shuffles at each distributed host and use multiple routing paths to prevent adversaries from tracking and revealing user identities. We show that our system is scalable with moderate latency (2.2s) when running in a cluster of 10,000 participants and is robust in the case of machine failures, making it an attractive new design for decentralized anonymous communication. DAENet ’s code is released onhttps://github.com/hku-systems/DAENet.

2021 Bidl: A High-throughput, Low-latency Permissioned Blockchain Framework for Datacenter Networks
abstract
A permissioned blockchain framework typically runs an efficient Byzantine consensus protocol and is attractive to deploy fast trading applications among a large number of mutually untrusted participants (e.g., companies). Unfortunately, all existing permissioned blockchain frameworks adopt sequential workflows for invoking the consensus protocol and executing applications' transactions, making the performance of these applications much lower than deploying them in traditional systems (e.g., in-datacenter stock exchange).

2020 Blockchain based Power Transaction Asynchronous Settlement System
abstract
The popularization and rapid development of distributed energy becomes a trend of the times. Distributed energy prosumers should be able to trade with each other to reduce losses, increase efficiency, flexibility and economy. The traditional centralized power settlement scheme is not suitable for the utilization on the situation of distributed energy transaction settlement. Energy internet as the next generation energy system integrating cuttingedge information technologies with energy system could realize peerto- peer energy services. The distributed interactive concept of the energy trading is highly consistent with the principle of blockchain. In this paper, aiming at the problems of information disunity, trust system difficult to establish, power deviation waste and cost advance caused by power pre-sale, a power transaction asynchronous settlement system for microgrid is proposed based on blockchain technology. The experiment results illustrate that the system obtains promising performance by reasonable set grid structure which could meet the requirements of practical applications.
