| 2023 | PUFFER: A Routability-Driven Placement Framework via Cell Padding with Multiple Features and Strategy ExplorationabstractPlacement is a critical stage in VLSI physical design, especially for routability optimization. Due to the large scale and high integration introduced by the advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology, there remains a significant challenge in routability in the placement stage, which will affect the subsequent routing process. This paper proposes a placement framework, called PUFFER, to optimize routability by cell padding and strategy exploration. The framework first estimates congestion by imitating the behaviors of routing detours and clustered cell spreading. Then it calculates cell padding based on multiple features inspired by the characteristics of convolutional and graph neural networks. Besides, it applies a Bayesian-based method to explore a better placement strategy. Compared with a commercial tool and the state-of-the-art academic RePlAce placer, experiments on industrial benchmarks show that our framework achieves the best routability on average, with a 2.7× speedup over the commercial tool. | 2023 | MultiSense: Cross-labelling and Learning Human Activities Using Multimodal Sensing DataabstractTo tap into the gold mine of data generated by Internet of Things (IoT) devices with unprecedented volume and value, there is an urgent need to efficiently and accurately label raw sensor data. To this end, we explore and leverage the hidden connections among the multimodal data collected by various sensing devices and propose to let different modal data complement and learn from each other. But it is challenging to align and fuse multimodal data without knowing their perception (and thus the correct labels). In this work, we propose MultiSense , a paradigm for automatically mining potential perception, cross-labelling each modal data, and then updating the learning models for recognizing human activity to achieve higher accuracy or even recognize new activities. We design innovative solutions for segmenting, aligning, and fusing multimodal data from different sensors, as well as model updating mechanism. We implement our framework and conduct comprehensive evaluations on a rich set of data. Our results demonstrate that MultiSense significantly improves the data usability and the power of the learning models. With nine diverse activities performed by users, our framework automatically labels multimodal sensing data generated by five different sensing mechanisms (video, smart watch, smartphone, audio, and wireless-channel) with an average accuracy 98.5%. Furthermore, it enables models of some modalities to learn unknown activities from other modalities and greatly improves the activity recognition ability. | 2022 | Multimodal Crowd Counting with Mutual Attention TransformersabstractCrowd counting is a fundamental yet challenging task that aims to automatically estimate the number of people in crowded scenes. Nowadays, with the rapid development of thermal and depth sensors, thermal images and depth maps become more accessible, which are proven to be beneficial information in boosting the performance of crowd counting. Consequently, we propose a Mutual Attention Transformer (MAT) module to fully leverage the complementary information of different modalities. Specifically, our MAT employs a cross-modal mutual attention mechanism to utilize the features of one modality to enhance the features of the other. Moreover, to improve performance by learning better visual representation and further exploiting modality-wise comple-mentarity, we design a self-supervised pre-training method based on cross-modal image reconstruction. Extensive experiments on two standard benchmarks (i.e., RGBT-CC and ShanghaiTechRGBD) show that the proposed method is effective and universal for multimodal crowd counting, outper-forming previous state-of-the-art methods. | 2022 | HairGAN: Spatial-Aware Palette GAN for Hair Color TransferabstractHair color transfer aims to transfer the hair color from a reference image to an original image while maintaining the hair structure of the original image. However, due to the complex hair structure and the misalignment of hair regions between the original image and the reference image, existing methods cannot complete this task well. To address these issues, we propose a hair color transfer GAN (HairGAN). It first utilizes off-the-shelf network to extract the hair region from the original image and transfer it into intermediary hair color. Then, Spatial-Aware Palette Alignment (SAPA) module is introduced to align the hair regions in the original image and the reference image. Furthermore, HairGAN employs cycle consistency reconstruction module to ensure the global consistency between original image and transferred image. We collect a dataset containing 2850 images and a few paired samples for hair color transfer. Extensive experiments show that HairGAN could generate high-quality transferred results. | 2021 | MultiSense: Cross Labelling and Learning Human Activities Using Multimodal Sensing DataabstractOne of the major challenges for fully enjoying the power of machine learning is the need for the high-quality labelled data. Different modal data can complement and learn from each other, but it is challenging to fuse multimodal data without knowing their perception (and thus the correct labels). With 9 diverse activities performed by users, our framework automatically labels multimodal sensing data generated by five different sensing mechanisms (video, smart watch, smartphone, audio, and wireless-channel) with an average accuracy 98.5%, while for each single-modal data model, the accuracy is 95.2%, 92.1%, 71.1%, 91.5%, and 34.8% respectively. Furthermore, it enables the existing models to learn unknown activities from other modalities and thus greatly improves the activity recognition accuracy. | 2020 | High-quality Activity-Level Video AdvertisingabstractOnline video advertising is a billion dollar business, but the current low CTR reveals the huge potential for improvement in the ad serving quality. In this work, we present a novel activity-level video advertising system named ActVa. Different from existing systems that assume a fixed scope of ad keywords, ActVA enables advertising targeted to non-predefined activities in a highly efficient way requiring no training data for diverse activities. To achieve this goal, a general and extensible graphical representation of both video content and advertising demand is proposed to embed multimodal content at the activity level. Our ad-content relevancy measurement can achieve 10,000 FPS retrieval speed. We model the ads assigning task as an optimization problem taking content relevance, ads revenue as well as viewer experience into consideration. A non-maximal suppression based algorithm is designed to significantly reduce the algorithm complexity for online ad serving. Our extensive objective and subjective experimental results show the effectiveness and efficiency of ActVA. ActVA can effectively uncovers numerous high-quality (content-relevant) advertising opportunities and delivers ads to viewers in a profitable and user-friendly way. | 2020 | A Request-level Guaranteed Delivery Advertising Planning: Forecasting and AllocationabstractThe guaranteed delivery model is widely used in online advertising. The publisher sells impressions in advance by promising to serve each advertiser an agreed-upon number of target impressions that satisfy specific attribute requirements over a fixed time period. Previous efforts usually model the service as a crowd-level or user-level supply allocation problem and focus on searching optimal allocation for online serving, assuming that forecasts of supply are available and contracts are already signed. Existing techniques are not sufficient to meet the needs of today's industry trends: 1) advertisers pursue more precise targeting, which requires not only user-level attributes but also request-level attributes; 2) users prefer more friendly ad serving, which imposes more diverse serving constraints; 3) the bottleneck of the publisher's revenue growth lies in not only the ad serving, but also the forecast accuracy and sales strategy. These issues are non-trivial to address, since the scale of the request-level model is orders of magnitude larger than that of the crowd-level or user-level models. Facing the challenges, we present a holistic design of a request-level guaranteed delivery advertising planning system with careful optimization for all three critical components including impression forecasting, selling and serving. Our system has been deployed in the Tencent online guaranteed delivery advertising system serving billion level users for nearly one year. Evaluations on large-scale real data and the performance of the deployed system both demonstrate that our design can significantly increase the request-level impression forecast accuracy and delivery rate. | 2019 | Large-scale User Visits Understanding and Forecasting with Deep Spatial-Temporal Tensor Factorization FrameworkabstractUnderstanding and forecasting user visits is of great importance for a variety of tasks, e.g., online advertising, which is one of the most profitable business models for Internet services. Publishers sell advertising spaces in advance with user visit volume and attributes guarantees. There are usually tens of thousands of attribute combinations in an online advertising system. The key problem is how to accurately forecast the number of user visits for each attribute combination. Many traditional work characterizing temporal trends of every single time series are quite inefficient for large-scale time series. Recently, a number of models based on deep learning or matrix factorization have been proposed for high-dimensional time series forecasting. However, most of them neglect correlations among attribute combinations, or are tailored for specific applications, resulting in poor adaptability for different business scenarios.Besides, sophisticated deep learning models usually cause high time and space complexity. There is still a lack of an efficient highly scalable and adaptable solution for accurate high-dimensional time series forecasting. To address this issue, in this work, we conduct a thorough analysis on large-scale user visits data and propose a novel deep spatial-temporal tensor factorization framework, which provides a general design for high-dimensional time series forecasting. We deployed the proposed framework in Tencent online guaranteed delivery advertising system, and extensively evaluated the effectiveness and efficiency of the framework in two different large-scale application scenarios. The results show that our framework outperforms existing methods in prediction accuracy. Meanwhile, it significantly reduces the parameter number and is resistant to incomplete data with up to 20% missing values. Lan Zhang 0002, Lan Xu 0001, Zhili Xiao, Zhengtao Wu |

| 2018 | A Reinforcement Learning Framework for Explainable RecommendationabstractExplainable recommendation, which provides explanations about why an item is recommended, has attracted increasing attention due to its ability in helping users make better decisions and increasing users' trust in the system. Existing explainable recommendation methods either ignore the working mechanism of the recommendation model or are designed for a specific recommendation model. Moreover, it is difficult for existing methods to ensure the presentation quality of the explanations (e.g., consistency). To solve these problems, we design a reinforcement learning framework for explainable recommendation. Our framework can explain any recommendation model (model-agnostic) and can flexibly control the explanation quality based on the application scenario. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework, we show how it can be used for generating sentence-level explanations. Specifically, we instantiate the explanation generator in the framework with a personalized-attention-based neural network. Offline experiments demonstrate that our method can well explain both collaborative filtering methods and deep-learning-based models. Evaluation with human subjects shows that the explanations generated by our method are significantly more useful than the explanations generated by the baselines.
