| 2022 | Object-Agnostic Transformers for Video Referring SegmentationabstractVideo referring segmentation focuses on segmenting out the object in a video based on the corresponding textual description. Previous works have primarily tackled this task by devising two crucial parts, an intra-modal module for context modeling and an inter-modal module for heterogeneous alignment. However, there are two essential drawbacks of this approach: (1) it lacks joint learning of context modeling and heterogeneous alignment, leading to insufficient interactions among input elements; (2) both modules require task-specific expert knowledge to design, which severely limits the flexibility and generality of prior methods. To address these problems, we here propose a novel Object-Agnostic Transformer-based Network, called OATNet, that simultaneously conducts intra-modal and inter-modal learning for video referring segmentation, without the aid of object detection or category-specific pixel labeling. More specifically, we first directly feed the sequence of textual tokens and visual tokens (pixels rather than detected object bounding boxes) into a multi-modal encoder, where context and alignment are simultaneously and effectively explored. We then design a novel cascade segmentation network to decouple our task into coarse-grained segmentation and fine-grained refinement. Moreover, considering the difficulty of samples, a more balanced metric is provided to better diagnose the performance of the proposed method. Extensive experiments on two popular datasets, A2D Sentences and J-HMDB Sentences, demonstrate that our proposed approach noticeably outperforms state-of-the-art methods. | 2021 | Multi-Sentence Auxiliary Adversarial Networks for Fine-Grained Text-to-Image SynthesisabstractDue to the development of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), significant progress has been achieved in text-to-image synthesis task. However, most previous works have only focus on learning the semantic consistency between paired images and sentences, without exploring the semantic correlation between different yet related sentences that describe the same image, which leads to significant visual variation among the synthesized images. Accordingly, in this article, we propose a new method for text-to-image synthesis, dubbed Multi-sentence Auxiliary Generative Adversarial Networks (MA-GAN); this approach not only improves the generation quality but also guarantees the generation similarity of related sentences by exploring the semantic correlation between different sentences describing the same image. More specifically, we propose a Single-sentence Generation and Multi-sentence Discrimination (SGMD) module that explores the semantic correlation between multiple related sentences in order to reduce the variation between their generated images and enhance the reliability of the generated results. Moreover, a Progressive Negative Sample Selection mechanism (PNSS) is designed to mine more suitable negative samples for training, which can effectively promote detailed discrimination ability in the generative model and facilitate the generation of more fine-grained results. Extensive experiments on Oxford-102 and CUB datasets reveal that our MA-GAN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Yanhua Yang, Lei Wang 0018, De Xie, Cheng Deng 0002, Dacheng Tao |

| 2020 | Multi-Task Consistency-Preserving Adversarial Hashing for Cross-Modal RetrievalabstractOwing to the advantages of low storage cost and high query efficiency, cross-modal hashing has received increasing attention recently. As failing to bridge the inherent modality gap between modalities, most existing cross-modal hashing methods have limited capability to explore the semantic consistency information between different modality data, leading to unsatisfactory search performance. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep hashing method named Multi-Task Consistency- Preserving Adversarial Hashing (CPAH) to fully explore the semantic consistency and correlation between different modalities for efficient cross-modal retrieval. First, we design a consistency refined module (CR) to divide the representations of different modality into two irrelevant parts, i.e., modality-common and modality-private representations. Then, a multi-task adversarial learning module (MA) is presented, which can make the modality-common representation of different modalities close to each other on feature distribution and semantic consistency. Finally, the compact and powerful hash codes can be generated from modality-common representation. Comprehensive evaluations conducted on three representative cross-modal benchmark datasets illustrate our method is superior to the state-of-the-art cross-modal hashing methods. | 2019 | Coupled CycleGAN: Unsupervised Hashing Network for Cross-Modal RetrievalabstractIn recent years, hashing has attracted more and more attention owing to its superior capacity of low storage cost and high query efficiency in large-scale cross-modal retrieval. Benefiting from deep leaning, continuously compelling results in cross-modal retrieval community have been achieved. However, existing deep cross-modal hashing methods either rely on amounts of labeled information or have no ability to learn an accuracy correlation between different modalities. In this paper, we proposed Unsupervised coupled Cycle generative adversarial Hashing networks (UCH), for cross-modal retrieval, where outer-cycle network is used to learn powerful common representation, and inner-cycle network is explained to generate reliable hash codes. Specifically, our proposed UCH seamlessly couples these two networks with generative adversarial mechanism, which can be optimized simultaneously to learn representation and hash codes. Extensive experiments on three popular benchmark datasets show that the proposed UCH outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised cross-modal hashing methods. | 2019 | Semantic Adversarial Network with Multi-Scale Pyramid Attention for Video ClassificationabstractTwo-stream architecture have shown strong performance in video classification task. The key idea is to learn spatiotemporal features by fusing convolutional networks spatially and temporally. However, there are some problems within such architecture. First, it relies on optical flow to model temporal information, which are often expensive to compute and store. Second, it has limited ability to capture details and local context information for video data. Third, it lacks explicit semantic guidance that greatly decrease the classification performance. In this paper, we proposed a new two-stream based deep framework for video classification to discover spatial and temporal information only from RGB frames, moreover, the multi-scale pyramid attention (MPA) layer and the semantic adversarial learning (SAL) module is introduced and integrated in our framework. The MPA enables the network capturing global and local feature to generate a comprehensive representation for video, and the SAL can make this representation gradually approximate to the real video semantics in an adversarial manner. Experimental results on two public benchmarks demonstrate our proposed methods achieves state-of-the-art results on standard video datasets. | 2019 | Cross-Modal Learning with Adversarial SamplesabstractWith the rapid developments of deep neural networks, numerous deep cross-modal analysis methods have been presented and are being applied in widespread real-world applications, including healthcare and safety-critical environments. However, the recent studies on robustness and stability of deep neural networks show that a microscopic modification, known as adversarial sample, which is even imperceptible to humans, can easily fool a well-performed deep neural network and brings a new obstacle to deep cross-modal correlation exploring. In this paper, we propose a novel Cross-Modal correlation Learning with Adversarial samples, namely CMLA, which for the first time presents the existence of adversarial samples in cross-modal data. Moreover, we provide a simple yet effective adversarial sample learning method, where inter- and intra- modality similarity regularizations across different modalities are simultaneously integrated into the learning of adversarial samples. Finally, our proposed CMLA is demonstrated to be highly effective in cross-modal hashing based retrieval. Extensive experiments on two cross-modal benchmark datasets show that the adversarial examples produced by our CMLA are efficient in fooling a target deep cross-modal hashing network. On the other hand, such adversarial examples can significantly strengthen the robustness of the target network by conducting an adversarial training.
