2025 NeuS-PIR: Learning Relightable Neural Surface Using Pre-Integrated Rendering
abstract
In this paper, we propose NeuS-PIR, a novel approach for learning relightable neural surfaces using pre-integrated rendering from multi-view image observations. Unlike traditional methods based on NeRFs or discrete mesh representations, our approach employs an implicit neural surface representation to reconstruct high-quality geometry. This representation enables the factorization of the radiance field into two components: a spatially varying material field and an all-frequency lighting model. By jointly optimizing this factorization with a differentiable pre-integrated rendering framework, and material encoding regularization, our method effectively addresses the ambiguity in geometry reconstruction, leading to improved disentanglement and refinement of scene properties. Furthermore, we introduce a technique to distill indirect illumination fields, capturing complex lighting effects such as inter-reflections. As a result, NeuS-PIR enables advanced applications like relighting, which can be seamlessly integrated into modern graphics engines. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on both synthetic and real datasets demonstrate that NeuS-PIR outperforms existing methods across various tasks. 2025 Fovea Stacking: Imaging with Dynamic Localized Aberration Correction
abstract
The desire for cameras with smaller form factors has recently led to a push for exploring computational imaging systems with reduced optical complexity such as a smaller number of lens elements. Unfortunately such simplified optical systems usually suffer from severe aberrations, especially in off-axis regions, which can be difficult to correct purely in software. In this paper we introduce Fovea Stacking, a new type of imaging system that utilizes an emerging dynamic optical component called the deformable phase plate (DPP) for localized aberration correction anywhere on the image sensor. By optimizing DPP deformations through a differentiable optical model, off-axis aberrations are corrected locally, producing a foveated image with enhanced sharpness at the fixation point - analogous to the eye's fovea. Stacking multiple such foveated images, each with a different fixation point, yields a composite image free from aberrations. To efficiently cover the entire field of view, we propose joint optimization of DPP deformations under imaging budget constraints. Due to the DPP device's non-linear behavior, we introduce a neural network-based control model for improved agreement between simulation and hardware performance. We further demonstrated that for extended depth-of-field imaging, Fovea Stacking outperforms traditional focus stacking in image quality. By integrating object detection or eye-tracking, the system can dynamically adjust the lens to track the object of interest-enabling real-time foveated video suitable for downstream applications such as surveillance or foveated virtual reality displays.

2022 GigaMVS: A Benchmark for Ultra-Large-Scale Gigapixel-Level 3D Reconstruction
abstract
Multiview stereopsis (MVS) methods, which can reconstruct both the 3D geometry and texture from multiple images, have been rapidly developed and extensively investigated from the feature engineering methods to the data-driven ones. However, there is no dataset containing both the 3D geometry of large-scale scenes and high-resolution observations of small details to benchmark the algorithms. To this end, we present GigaMVS, the first gigapixel-image-based 3D reconstruction benchmark for ultra-large-scale scenes. The gigapixel images, with both wide field-of-view and high-resolution details, can clearly observe both thePalace-scale scene structure andRelievo-scale local details. The ground-truth geometry is captured by the laser scanner, which covers ultra-large-scale scenes with an average area of 8667 m$^2$and a maximum area of 32007 m$^2$. Owing to the extremely large scale, complex occlusion, and gigapixel-level images, GigaMVS exposes problems that emerge from the poor scalability and efficiency of the existing MVS algorithms. We thoroughly investigate the state-of-the-art methods in terms of geometric and textural measurements, which point to the weakness of the existing methods and promising opportunities for future works. We believe that GigaMVS can benefit the community of 3D reconstruction and support the development of novel algorithms balancing robustness, scalability and accuracy.
