2025 RainyGS: Efficient Rain Synthesis with Physically-Based Gaussian Splatting
abstract
We consider the problem of adding dynamic rain effects to in-the-wild scenes in a physically-correct manner. Recent advances in scene modeling have made significant progress, with NeRF and Gaussian Splatting techniques emerging as powerful tools for reconstructing complex scenes. However, while effective for novel view synthesis, these methods typically struggle with challenging scene editing tasks, such as physics-based rain simulation. In contrast, traditional physics-based simulations can generate realistic rain effects, such as raindrops and splashes, but they often rely on skilled artists to carefully set up high-fidelity scenes. This process lacks flexibility and scalability, limiting its applicability to broader, open-world environments. In this work, we introduce RainyGS, a novel approach that leverages the strengths of both physics-based modeling and Gaussian Splatting to generate photorealistic, dynamic rain effects in open-world scenes with physical accuracy. At the core of our method is the integration of physically-based raindrop and shallow water simulation techniques within the fast Gaussian Splatting rendering framework, enabling realistic and efficient simulations of raindrop behavior, splashes, and reflections. Our method supports synthesizing rain effects at over 30 fps, offering users flexible control over rain intensity—from light drizzles to heavy downpours. We demonstrate that RainyGS performs effectively for both real-world outdoor scenes and large-scale driving scenarios, delivering more photorealistic and physically-accurate rain effects compared to state-of-the-art methods. 2025 One-shot 3D Object Canonicalization based on Geometric and Semantic Consistency
abstract
3D object canonicalization is a fundamental task, essential for various downstream tasks. Existing methods rely on either cumbersome manual processes or priors learned from extensive, per- category training samples. Real- world datasets, however, often exhibit long- tail distributions, challenging existing learning- based methods, especially in categories with limited samples. We address this by introducing the first one- shot category- level object canonicalization framework that operates under arbitrary poses, requiring only a single canonical model as a reference (the "prior model") for each category. To canonicalize any object, our framework first extracts semantic cues with large language models (LLMs) and vision- language models (VLMs) to establish correspondences with the prior model. We introduce a novel joint energy function to enforce geometric and semantic consistency, aligning object orientations precisely despite significant shape variations. Moreover, we adopt a support- plane strategy to reduce search space for initial poses and utilize a semantic relationship map to select the canonical pose from multiple hypotheses. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that our framework achieves state- of- the- art performance and validates key design choices. Using our framework, we create the Canonical Objaverse Dataset (COD), canonicalizing 32K samples in the Objaverse-LVIS dataset, underscoring the effectiveness of our framework on handling large- scale datasets. 2025 Robust Single-shot Structured Light 3D Imaging via Neural Feature Decoding
abstract
We consider the problem of active 3D imaging using single-shot structured light systems, which are widely employed in commercial 3D sensing devices such as Apple Face ID and Intel RealSense. Traditional structured light methods typically decode depth correspondences through pixel-domain matching algorithms, resulting in limited robustness under challenging scenarios like occlusions, fine-structured details, and non-Lambertian surfaces. Inspired by recent advances in neural feature matching, we propose a learning-based structured light decoding framework that performs robust correspondence matching within feature space rather than the fragile pixel domain. Our method extracts neural features from the projected patterns and captured infrared (IR) images, explicitly incorporating their geometric priors by building cost volumes in feature space, achieving substantial performance improvements over pixel-domain decoding approaches. To further enhance depth quality, we introduce a depth refinement module that leverages strong priors from large-scale monocular depth estimation models, improving fine detail recovery and global structural coherence. To facilitate effective learning, we develop a physically-based structured light rendering pipeline, generating nearly one million synthetic pattern-image pairs with diverse objects and materials for indoor settings. Experiments demonstrate that our method, trained exclusively on synthetic data with multiple structured light patterns, generalizes well to real-world indoor environments, effectively processes various pattern types without retraining, and consistently outperforms both commercial structured light systems and passive stereo RGB-based depth estimation methods. 2024 STOPNet: Multiview-based 6-DoF Suction Detection for Transparent Objects on Production Lines
abstract
In this work, we present STOPNet, a framework for 6-DoF object suction detection on production lines, with a focus on but not limited to transparent objects, which is an important and challenging problem in robotic systems and modern industry. Current methods requiring depth input fail on transparent objects due to depth cameras’ deficiency in sensing their geometry, while we proposed a novel framework to reconstruct the scene on the production line depending only on RGB input, based on multiview stereo. Compared to existing works, our method not only reconstructs the whole 3D scene in order to obtain high-quality 6-DoF suction poses in real time but also generalizes to novel environments, novel arrangements and novel objects, including challenging transparent objects, both in simulation and the real world. Extensive experiments in simulation and the real world show that our method significantly surpasses the baselines and has better generalizability, which caters to practical industrial needs.

2024 Open6DOR: Benchmarking Open-instruction 6-DoF Object Rearrangement and A VLM-based Approach
abstract
The integration of large-scale Vision-Language Models (VLMs) with embodied AI can greatly enhance the generalizability and the capacity to follow open instructions for robots. However, existing studies on object manipulation are not up to full consideration of the 6-DoF requirements, let alone establishing a comprehensive benchmark. In this paper, we propel the pioneer construction of the benchmark and approach for Open-instruction 6-DoF Object Rearrangement (Open6DOR). Specifically, we collect a synthetic dataset of 200+ objects and carefully design 5400+ Open6DOR tasks. These tasks are divided into the Position-track, Rotation-track, and 6-DoF-track for evaluating different embodied agents in predicting the positions and rotations of target objects.Besides, we also propose a VLM-based approach for Open6DOR, named Open6DOR-GPT, which empowers GPT-4V with 3D-awareness and simulation-assistance while exploiting its strengths in generalizability and instruction-following. We compare the existing embodied agents with our Open6DOR-GPT on the proposed Open6DOR benchmark and find that Open6DOR-GPT achieves the state-of-the-art performance. We further show the impressive performance of Open6DOR-GPT in diverse real-world experiments.

2023 GraspNeRF: Multiview-based 6-DoF Grasp Detection for Transparent and Specular Objects Using Generalizable NeRF
abstract
In this work, we tackle 6-DoF grasp detection for transparent and specular objects, which is an important yet challenging problem in vision-based robotic systems, due to the failure of depth cameras in sensing their geometry. We, for the first time, propose a multiview RGB-based 6-DoF grasp detection network, GraspNeRF, that leverages the generalizable neural radiance field (NeRF) to achieve material-agnostic object grasping in clutter. Compared to the existing NeRF-based 3-DoF grasp detection methods that rely on densely captured input images and time-consuming per-scene optimization, our system can perform zero-shot NeRF construction with sparse RGB inputs and reliably detect 6-DoF grasps, both in real-time. The proposed framework jointly learns generalizable NeRF and grasp detection in an end-to-end manner, optimizing the scene representation construction for the grasping. For training data, we generate a large-scale photorealistic domain-randomized synthetic dataset of grasping in cluttered tabletop scenes that enables direct transfer to the real world. Our extensive experiments in synthetic and real-world environments demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms all the baselines in all the experiments while remaining in real-time. 2021 Edit Like A Designer: Modeling Design Workflows for Unaligned Fashion Editing
abstract
Fashion editing has drawn increasing research interest with its extensive application prospect. Instead of directly manipulating the real fashion item image, it is more intuitive for designers to modify it via the design draft. In this paper, we model design workflows for a novel task of unaligned fashion editing, allowing the user to edit a fashion item through manipulating its corresponding design draft. The challenge lies in the large misalignment between the real fashion item and the design draft, which could severely degrade the quality of editing results. To address this issue, we propose an Unaligned Fashion Editing Network (UFE-Net). A coarsely rendered fashion item is firstly generated from the edited design draft via a translation module. With this as guidance, we align and manipulate the original unedited fashion item via a novel alignment-driven fashion editing module, and then optimize the details and shape via a reference-guided refinement module. Furthermore, a joint training strategy is introduced to exploit the synergy between the alignment and editing tasks. Our UFE-Net enables the edited fashion item to have semantically consistent geometric shape and realistic details to the edited draft in the edited region, as well as to keep the unedited region intact. Experiments demonstrate our superiority over the competing methods on unaligned fashion editing.
