| 2025 | LiquidGEMM: Hardware-Efficient W4A8 GEMM Kernel for High-Performance LLM ServingabstractQuantization is a critical technique for accelerating LLM inference by reducing memory footprint and improving computational efficiency. Among various schemes, 4-bit weight and 8-bit activation quantization (W4A8) offers a strong balance between accuracy and performance. However, existing W4A8 GEMM kernels fall short in practice due to inefficient dequantization on CUDA Cores, which cannot keep pace with the high throughput of Tensor Cores. In this paper, we present LiquidGEMM, a hardware-efficient W4A8 GEMM kernel for efficient LLM serving. LiquidGEMM designs two key techniques: LiquidQuant, a hardware-efficient quantization method that enables fast, overflow-safe dequantization using just two arithmetic instructions per four elements; and an implicit fine-grained pipeline that fully overlaps weight loading, dequantization, and MMA across warp groups without software synchronization or redundant memory traffic. Experimental results show that LiquidGEMM achieves up to 2.90x speedup over state-of-the-art W4A8 kernels and up to 4.94x end-to-end system-level speedup. Compared to various quantized GEMM kernels in NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM, LiquidGEMM delivers 1.12-1.63x performance gains, and achieves up to 1.63x system-level speedup. | 2023 | ROME: Robustifying Memory-Efficient NAS via Topology Disentanglement and Gradient AccumulationabstractAlbeit being a prevalent architecture searching approach, differentiable architecture search (DARTS) is largely hindered by its substantial memory cost since the entire supernet resides in the memory. This is where the single-path DARTS comes in, which only chooses a single-path submodel at each step. While being memory-friendly, it also comes with low computational costs. Nonetheless, we discover a critical issue of single-path DARTS that has not been primarily noticed. Namely, it also suffers from severe performance collapse since too many parameter-free operations like skip connections are derived, just like DARTS does. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm called RObustifying Memory-Efficient NAS (ROME) to give a cure. First, we disentangle the topology search from the operation search to make searching and evaluation consistent. We then adopt Gumbel-Top2 reparameterization and gradient accumulation to robustify the unwieldy bi-level optimization. We verify ROME extensively across 15 benchmarks to demonstrate its effectiveness and robustness. Xiaoxing Wang, Xiangxiang Chu, Yuda Fan, Zhexi Zhang, Bo Zhang 0046, Xiaokang Yang 0001, Junchi Yan |

| 2023 | Quantum detectable Byzantine agreement for distributed data trust management in blockchainabstractNo system entity within a contemporary distributed cyber system can be entirely trusted. Hence, the classic centralized trust management method cannot be directly applied to it. Blockchain technology is essential to achieving decentralized trust management, its consensus mechanism is useful in addressing large-scale data sharing and data consensus challenges. Herein, an n-party quantum detectable Byzantine agreement (DBA) based on the GHZ state to realize the data consensus in a quantum blockchain is proposed, considering the threat posed by the growth of quantum information technology on the traditional blockchain. Relying on the nonlocality of the GHZ state, the proposed protocol detects the honesty of nodes by allocating the entanglement resources between different nodes. The GHZ state is notably simpler to prepare than other multi-particle entangled states, thus reducing preparation consumption and increasing practicality. When the number of network nodes increases, the proposed protocol provides better scalability and stronger practicability than the current quantum DBA. In addition, the proposed protocol has the optimal fault-tolerant found and does not rely on any other presumptions. A consensus can be reached even when there are n−2 traitors. The performance analysis confirms viability and effectiveness through exemplification. The security analysis also demonstrates that the quantum DBA protocol is unconditionally secure, effectively ensuring the security of data and realizing data consistency in the quantum blockchain. | 2022 | Distilldarts: Network Distillation for Smoothing Gradient Distributions in Differentiable Architecture SearchabstractRecent studies show that differentiable architecture search (DARTS) suffers notable instability and collapse issue: skip-connect may gradually dominate the cell, leading to deteri-orating architectures. We conjecture that the domination of skip-connect is due to its superiority in gradient compen-sate. On this foundation, we propose a novel and stable method, called DistillDARTS, to stabilize DARTS by knowl-edge distillation and self-distillation scheme. Specifically, the distillation is able to serve as a substitute for skip-connect and smooth the back-propagated gradient distributions among layers of DARTS. By compensating gradients in shallow lay-ers, our method can relieve the dependence of gradient on skip-connect and hence mitigates the collapse issue. Exten-sive experiments on a range of benchmarks demonstrate that DistillDARTS can obtain sturdy architectures with few skip-connects without additional manual interventions, thus suc-cessfully improving the robustness of DARTS. Due to the im-proved stability, our proposed approach achieves the accuracy of 97.57% on CIFAR-10 and 75.8% on ImageNet. | 2021 | Application of Leading Indicator Forecasting Based on Optimal Transmission in Financial TechnologyabstractLeading indicators have been widely used to predict the developing orientation of the economy and provide guidance for investors to make judgements. According to the development trend of financial technology, we explore the application of leading indicators from three aspects: optimal transmission, uncertainty visualization, and knowledge graph construction. The optimal transmission theory automatically calculates the cost of matching two time series, which greatly improves the efficiency and accuracy of finding leading indicators. Besides, we propose a visualization method to illustrate the uncertainty of leading indicators, which can extract meaningful information from a wide variety of data and models. Further-more, we propose to build a network of relationships between industries and indicators using knowledge graph. Leading in-dicators and lagging indicators can be effectively discovered through the proposed methods. Experiments verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed optimal transmission theory while the uncertainty visualization model can provide reasonable guidance for investors. | 2020 | Automatic Student Network Search for Knowledge DistillationabstractPre-trained language models (PLMs), such as BERT, have achieved outstanding performance on multiple natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, such pre-trained models usually contain a huge number of parameters and are computationally expensive. The high resource demand hinders their application on resource-restricted devices like mobile phones. Knowledge distillation (KD) is an effective compression approach, aiming at encouraging a light-weight student network to imitate the teacher network, and accordingly latent knowledge is transferred from the teacher to student. However, the great majority of student networks in previous KD methods are manually designed, normally a subnetwork of the teacher network. Transformer is generally utilized as the student for compressing BERT but still contains masses of parameters. Motivated by this, we propose a novel approach named NAS-KD, which automatically generates an optimal student network using neural architecture search (NAS) to enhance the distillation for BERT. Experiment on 7 classification tasks in NLP domain demonstrates that NAS-KD can substantially reduce the size of BERT without much performance sacrifice.
