| 2022 | Decompose the Sounds and Pixels, Recompose the EventsabstractIn this paper, we propose a framework centering around a novel architecture called the Event Decomposition Recomposition Network (EDRNet) to tackle the Audio-Visual Event (AVE) localization problem in the supervised and weakly supervised settings. AVEs in the real world exhibit common unraveling patterns (termed as Event Progress Checkpoints(EPC)), which humans can perceive through the cooperation of their auditory and visual senses. Unlike earlier methods which attempt to recognize entire event sequences, the EDRNet models EPCs and inter-EPC relationships using stacked temporal convolutions. Based on the postulation that EPC representations are theoretically consistent for an event category, we introduce the State Machine Based Video Fusion, a novel augmentation technique that blends source videos using different EPC template sequences. Additionally, we design a new loss function called the Land-Shore-Sea loss to compactify continuous foreground and background representations. Lastly, to alleviate the issue of confusing events during weak supervision, we propose a prediction stabilization method called Bag to Instance Label Correction. Experiments on the AVE dataset show that our collective framework outperforms the state-of-the-art by a sizable margin. Varshanth R. Rao, Md Ibrahim Khalil, Haoda Li, Peng Dai 0002, Juwei Lu |

| 2022 | Neural Shape Mating: Self-Supervised Object Assembly with Adversarial Shape PriorsabstractLearning to autonomously assemble shapes is a crucial skill for many robotic applications. While the majority of existing part assembly methods focus on correctly posing semantic parts to recreate a whole object, we interpret assembly more literally: as mating geometric parts together to achieve a snug fit. By focusing on shape alignment rather than semantic cues, we can achieve across category generalization and scaling. In this paper, we introduce a novel task, pairwise 3D geometric shape mating, and propose Neural Shape Mating (NSM) to tackle this problem. Given point clouds of two object parts of an unknown category, NSM learns to reason about the fit of the two parts and predict a pair of 3D poses that tightly mate them together. In addition, we couple the training of NSM with an implicit shape reconstruction task, making NSM more robust to imperfect point cloud observations. To train NSM, we present a self-supervised data collection pipeline that generates pairwise shape mating data with ground truth by randomly cutting an object mesh into two parts, resulting in a dataset that consists of 200K shape mating pairs with numerous object meshes and diverse cut types. We train NSM on the collected dataset and compare it with several point cloud registration methods and one part assembly baseline approach. Extensive experimental results and ablation studies under various settings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Additional material is available at: neural-shape-mating.github.io. | 2022 | GPSC: A Grid-Based Privacy-Reserving Framework for Online Spatial CrowdsourcingabstractSpatial crowdsourcing (SC) allows requesters to crowdsource tasks to workers based on location proximity. To preserve privacy, the location should not be disclosed to untrustworthy entities (even the SC platform). Previous solutions to preserve workers’ location privacy require an online trusty third party (TTP), which is not practical in reality. In this paper, we design a framework that allows the SC platform to assign tasks to nearest workers in an online manner without knowing their actual locations. We propose an encryption algorithm to encrypt the locations of tasks and workers, and design an indexing method that assigns tasks to workers without losing too much privacy. We prove that there exists a trade-off between efficiency and security theoretically, which can be controlled based on user preference. We verify our method on real-world datasets and experimental results show that our method is efficient, effective and practical. Haoda Li, Qiyang Song, Guoliang Li 0001, Qi Li 0002, Rengui Wang |

| 2019 | Ratel: Interactive Analytics for Large Scale TrajectoriesabstractTrajectory data analytics plays an important role in many applications, such as transportation optimization, urban planning, taxi scheduling, and so on. However, trajectory data analytics has a great challenge that the time cost for processing queries is too high on big datasets. In this paper, we demonstrate a distributed in-memory framework Ratel base on Spark for analyzing large scale trajectories. Ratel groups trajectories into partitions by considering the data locality and load balance. We build R-Tree based global indexes to prune partitions when applying trajectory search and join. For each partition, Ratel uses a filter-refinement method to efficiently find similar trajectories. We show three kinds of scenarios - bus station planning, route recommendation, and transportation analytics. Demo attendees can interact with a web UI, pose different queries on the dataset, and navigate the query result. Haoda Li, Guoliang Li 0001, Haitao Yuan 0002 |

| 2019 | Towards Automatic Mathematical Exercise SolvingabstractKnowledge graphs are widely applied in many applications. Automatically solving mathematical exercises is also an interesting task which can be enhanced by knowledge reasoning. In this paper, we design MathGraph, a knowledge graph aiming to solve high school mathematical exercises. Since it requires fine-grained mathematical derivation and calculation of different mathematical objects, we design a crowdsourcing-based method to help build MathGraph. MathGraph supports massive kinds of mathematical objects, operations and constraints which may be involved in exercises. Furthermore, we propose an algorithm to align a semantically parsed exercise to MathGraph and figure out the answer automatically. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets verify the effectiveness of MathGraph.
