| 2014 | Latent dirichlet allocation based diversified retrieval for e-commerce searchabstractDiversified retrieval is a very important problem on many e-commerce sites, e.g. eBay and Amazon. Using IR approaches without optimizing for diversity results in a clutter of redundant items that belong to the same products. Most existing product taxonomies are often too noisy, with overlapping structures and non-uniform granularity, to be used directly in diversified retrieval. To address this problem, we propose a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) based diversified retrieval approach that selects diverse items based on the hidden user intents. Our approach first discovers the hidden user intents of a query using the LDA model, and then ranks the user intents by making trade-offs between their relevance and information novelty. Finally, it chooses the most representative item for each user intent to display. To evaluate the diversity in the search results on e-commerce sites, we propose a new metric, average satisfaction, measuring user satisfaction with the search results. Through our empirical study on eBay, we show that the LDA model discovers meaningful user intents and the LDA-based approach provides significantly higher user satisfaction than the eBay production ranker and three other diversified retrieval approaches. | 2012 | Data-driven tree-structured Bayesian network for image segmentationabstractThis paper presents Data-Driven Tree-structured Bayesian network (DDT), a novel probabilistic graphical model for hierarchical unsupervised image segmentation. The DDT captures long and short-ranged correlations between neighboring regions in each image using a tree-structured prior. Unlike other previous work, DDT first segments an input image into superpixels and learn a tree-structured prior based on the topology of superpixels in different scales. Such a tree structure is referred to as data-driven tree structure. Each superpixel is represented by a variable node taking a discrete value of class/label of the segmentation. The probabilistic relationships among the nodes are represented by edges in the network. The unsupervised image segmentation, hence, can be viewed as an inference problem of the nodes in the tree structure of DDT, which can be carried out efficiently. We evaluate quantitatively our results with respect to the ground-truth segmentation, demonstrating that our proposed framework performs competitively with the state of the art in unsupervised image segmentation and contour detection. | 2010 | Topic regression multi-modal Latent Dirichlet Allocation for image annotationabstractWe present topic-regression multi-modal Latent Dirich-let Allocation (tr-mmLDA), a novel statistical topic model for the task of image and video annotation. At the heart of our new annotation model lies a novel latent variable regression approach to capture correlations between image or video features and annotation texts. Instead of sharing a set of latent topics between the 2 data modalities as in the formulation of correspondence LDA in [2], our approach introduces a regression module to correlate the 2 sets of topics, which captures more general forms of association and allows the number of topics in the 2 data modalities to be different. We demonstrate the power of tr-mmLDA on 2 standard annotation datasets: a 5000-image subset of COREL and a 2687-image LabelMe dataset. The proposed association model shows improved performance over correspondence LDA as measured by caption perplexity. Duangmanee Putthividhya, Hagai Attias, Srikantan S. Nagarajan |

| 2010 | Supervised topic model for automatic image annotationabstractThis paper presents a new probabilistic model for the task of image annotation. Our model, which we call sLDA-bin, extends supervised Latent Dirichlet Allocation (sLDA) model to handle a multi-variate binary response variable of the annotation data. Unlike correspondence LDA (cLDA), the association model in sLDA allows each caption word to be associated with more than 1 image region and is thus more appropriate for annotation words that globally describe the scene. By modeling the response variable as a multi-variate Bernoulli, we introduce a tight convex variational bound for the logistic function and derive an efficient variational inference algorithm based on mean-field approximation. Our model compares favorably with cLDA on an image annotation task, as demonstrated by a superior caption prediction probability. Duangmanee Putthividhya, Hagai Attias, Srikantan S. Nagarajan |

| 2009 | Independent factor topic modelsabstractTopic models such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Correlated Topic Model (CTM) have recently emerged as powerful statistical tools for text document modeling. In this paper, we improve upon CTM and propose Independent Factor Topic Models (IFTM) which use linear latent variable models to uncover the hidden sources of correlation between topics. There are 2 main contributions of this work. First, by using a sparse source prior model, we can directly visualize sparse patterns of topic correlations. Secondly, the conditional independence assumption implied in the use of latent source variables allows the objective function to factorize, leading to a fast Newton-Raphson based variational inference algorithm. Experimental results on synthetic and real data show that IFTM runs on average 3--5 times faster than CTM, while giving competitive performance as measured by perplexity and loglikelihood of held-out data. | 2007 | Probabilistic Graphical Model for Auto-Annotation, Content-Based Retrieval, and Classification of TV Clips Containing Audio, Video, and TextabstractWe present a probabilistic graphical model that learns the joint statistical structures of text, audio, and video for the purpose of classification and retrieval of multimedia documents. The proposed model, which we call multi-modal LDA (MM-LDA), builds on the basic latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) model by postulating common hidden factors, termed topics, that are shared among the 3 data modalities. These hidden topics correspond to patterns of word co-occurrences in multimedia documents and describe how text words co-occur with certain visual and acoustic features. We demonstrate the power of MM-LDA in representing TV clips containing closed-captions, video, and audio, and show promising results in 3 challenging applications: TV clip classification, retrieval, and auto-annotation. | 2006 | Motion Patterns: High-Level Representation of Natural Video SequencesabstractThis work investigates the use of nonlinear dependencies in natural image sequence statistics to learn higher-order structures in natural videos. We propose a two-layer model that learns variance correlation between linear ICA coefficients and present a novel nonlinear representation of natural videos. The first layer performs a linear mapping from pixel values to ICA coefficients. In doing so, the spatiotemporal dynamics in natural videos are decomposed into a set of bases each encoding "independent motion." By assuming that the nonlinear dependency of ICA coefficients takes the form of variance correlation, the second layer learns the joint distribution of ICA sources that captures how these independent bases co-activate. Experimental results show that the abstract representation correspond to various activation patterns of bases with similar motion, hence the term "motion patterns." Our model offers a novel description of higher-order structures in natural videos. We illustrate the usefulness of the proposed representation in video segmentation and denoising tasks.
