2025 LiLoc: Lifelong Localization Using Adaptive Submap Joining and Egocentric Factor Graph
abstract
This paper proposes a versatile graph-based lifelong localization framework using LiDAR, LiLoc, which enhances its timeliness by maintaining a single central session while improves the accuracy through multi-modal factors between the central and subsidiary sessions. First, an adaptive submap joining strategy is employed to generate prior submaps (keyframes and poses) for the central session, and to provide priors for subsidiaries when constraints are needed for robust localization. Next, a coarse-to-fine pose initialization for subsidiary sessions is performed using vertical recognition and ICP refinement in the global coordinate frame. To elevate the accuracy of subsequent localization, we propose an egocentric factor graph (EFG) module that integrates the IMU preintegration, LiDAR odometry and scan match factors in a joint optimization manner. Specifically, the scan match factors are constructed by a novel propagation model that efficiently distributes the prior constrains as edges to the relevant prior pose nodes, weighted by noises based on keyframe registration errors. Additionally, the framework supports flexible switching between two modes: relocalization (RLM) and incremental localization (ILM) based on the proposed overlap-based mechanism to select or update the prior submaps from central session. The proposed LiLoc is tested on public and custom datasets, demonstrating accurate localization performance against state-of-the-art methods. Our codes will be publicly available on https://github.com/Yixin-F/LiLoc.

2024 Segmented Curved-Voxel Occupancy Descriptor for Dynamic-Aware LiDAR Odometry and Mapping
abstract
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) employing 3D LiDAR data constitutes an indispensable perception technology for geospatial sensing of the surrounding environments. Nevertheless, the existence of dynamic objects can substantially impair the sensing performance. This paper proposes a novel egocentric descriptor namedSegmented Curved-Voxel Occupancy Descriptor(SCV-OD), which serves as the backbone for constructing a dynamic-aware and LiDAR-only SLAM in a tight-coupled and consistent manner. Assisted with LiDAR intensity and geometric features, the object segmentation module clusters curved voxels into objects and recognizes potential dynamic objects as prior knowledge. Then in the object tracking module, potential dynamic objects are tracked through curved-voxel overlay and high dynamic objects are removed according to object overlap ratio. The aforementioned two modules are closely coupled to mutually compensate for accuracy loss by sharing the same SCV-OD. Finally, the VGICP-based LiDAR mapping module optimizes LiDAR poses with considering dynamic objects and results in a global static instance map. We validated the proposed method on the public dataset (KITTI) and our custom dataset. The evaluation results illustrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) LiDAR-only methods in pose estimation and dynamic removal.

2022 Solving the Batch Stochastic Bin Packing Problem in Cloud: A Chance-constrained Optimization Approach
abstract
This paper investigates a critical resource allocation problem in the first party cloud: scheduling containers to machines. There are tens of services, and each service runs a set of homogeneous containers with dynamic resource usage; containers of a service are scheduled daily in a batch fashion. This problem can be naturally formulated as Stochastic Bin Packing Problem (SBPP). However, traditional SBPP research often focuses on cases of empty machines, whose objective, i.e., to minimize the number of used machines, is not well-defined for the more common reality with nonempty machines. This paper aims to close this gap. First, we define a new objective metric, Used Capacity at Confidence (UCaC), which measures the maximum used resources at a probability and is proved to be consistent for both empty and nonempty machines and reformulate the SBPP under chance constraints. Second, by modeling the container resource usage distribution in a generative approach, we reveal that UCaC can be approximated with Gaussian, which is verified by trace data of real-world applications. Third, we propose an exact solver by solving the equivalent cutting stock variant as well as two heuristics-based solvers -- UCaC best fit, bi-level heuristics. We experimentally evaluate these solvers on both synthetic datasets and real application traces, demonstrating our methodology's advantage over traditional SBPP optimal solver minimizing the number of used machines, with a low rate of resource violations.

2020 Secure Inter-Domain Forwarding Loop Test in Software Defined Networks
abstract
Debugging a traditional network is notoriously difficult due to network devices' heterogeneity and protocols' decentralized nature, but Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is changing this predicament. Recent works have provided very nice approaches for an administrator to perform several fundamental network tests in a single-domain SDN network. However, how to perform these tests securely in multi-domain networks still remains open. In this paper, we study the highly challenging problem of inter-domain forwarding loop test in a SDN environment. We present two novel testing protocols that can be used for inter-domain loop tests. Both protocols are secure in the sense that they protect each domain's private information about its topology and configuration. The first protocol, based on random sampling, is highly efficient with a small error probability diminishing exponentially in the sample size. The second protocol, based on secure set intersection test, guarantees 100 percent accuracy of the result, although not as efficient as the first one. We provide rigorous proofs for the security and accuracy guarantees, and show our protocols have very good efficiency by testing them with real-world network data.

2018 Recursive Structure Similarity: A Novel Algorithm for Graph Clustering
abstract
A various number of graph clustering algorithms have been proposed and applied in real-world applications such as network analysis, bio-informatics, social computing, and etc. However, existing algorithms usually focus on optimizing specified quality measures at the global network level, without carefully considering the destruction of local structures which could be informative and significant in practice. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering algorithm for undirected graphs based on a new structure similarity measure which is computed in a recursive procedure. Our method can provide robust and high-quality clustering results, while preserving informative local structures in the original graph. Rigorous experiments conducted on a variety of benchmark and protein datasets show that our algorithm consistently outperforms existing algorithms.

2018 Online Bootstrap Confidence Intervals for the Stochastic Gradient Descent Estimator
abstract
In many applications involving large dataset or online learning, stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is a scalable algorithm to compute parameter estimates and has gained increasing popularity due to its numerical convenience and memory efficiency. While the asymptotic properties of SGD-based estimators have been well established, statistical inference such as interval estimation remains much unexplored. The classical bootstrap is not directly applicable if the data are not stored in memory. The plug-in method is not applicable when there is no explicit formula for the covariance matrix of the estimator. In this paper, we propose an online bootstrap procedure for the estimation of confidence intervals, which, upon the arrival of each observation, updates the SGD estimate as well as a number of randomly perturbed SGD estimates. The proposed method is easy to implement in practice. We establish its theoretical properties for a general class of models that includes linear regressions, generalized linear models, M-estimators and quantile regressions as special cases. The finite-sample performance and numerical utility is evaluated by simulation studies and real data applications.

2016 Privacy-Preserving Utility Verification of the Data Published by Non-Interactive Differentially Private Mechanisms
abstract
In the problem of privacy-preserving collaborative data publishing, a central data publisher is responsible for aggregating sensitive data from multiple parties and then anonymizing it before publishing for data mining. In such scenarios, the data users may have a strong demand to measure the utility of the published data, since most anonymization techniques have side effects on data utility. Nevertheless, this task is non-trivial, because the utility measuring usually requires the aggregated raw data, which is not revealed to the data users due to privacy concerns. Furthermore, the data publishers may even cheat in the raw data, since no one, including the individual providers, knows the full data set. In this paper, we first propose a privacy-preserving utility verification mechanism based upon cryptographic technique for DiffPart-a differentially private scheme designed for set-valued data. This proposal can measure the data utility based upon the encrypted frequencies of the aggregated raw data instead of the plain values, which thus prevents privacy breach. Moreover, it is enabled to privately check the correctness of the encrypted frequencies provided by the publisher, which helps detect dishonest publishers. We also extend this mechanism to DiffGen-another differentially private publishing scheme designed for relational data. Our theoretical and experimental evaluations demonstrate the security and efficiency of the proposed mechanism.

2015 Joint Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Communications Underlaying Uplink MIMO Cellular Networks
abstract
This paper presents a resource allocation framework for device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying uplink MIMO cellular networks. At first, our aim is to address the sum-rate maximization problem of the cellular network with both D2D and cellular users. An algorithm based on pure random search is presented for obtaining the optimal resource allocation without using an exhaustive search. Then, we propose a noncooperative resource allocation game for the joint self-optimization of channel allocation, power control, and precoding of the D2D users in a more practical setting. The feasibility and existence of the pure strategy Nash equilibrium are then established. An iterative algorithm based on best response dynamic is then proposed to determine the feasible pure strategy Nash equilibrium under specific conditions. As the algorithm may not always converge, we devise a strategy refinement mechanism to tackle this issue based on the sum-rate criterion. Simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and findings.
