| 2024 | A Dual-branch Self-supervised Learning Framework with Counterfactual Attention Learning for Histopathology Nuclei SegmentationabstractHistopathology whole slide image (WSI) analysis is particularly important in cancer diagnosis, as it helps doctors assess the tissue morphology within the tumor microenvironment. However, the abnormal characteristics of nuclei size, shape, and distribution, along with fuzzy boundaries, size variations, and nuclei clustering, increase the difficulty of segmentation. In multi-class segmentation scenarios, the differences between nuclei can sometimes be subtle, further complicating the segmentation task. Additionally, the scarcity of WSI data labels makes it challenging for previous methods to capture key information within complex structures. To address these issues, we propose a dual-branch network combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Vision Transformer (ViT), introducing a counterfactual attention learning mechanism to handle complex structures and subtle variations. To overcome the limitation of scarce annotated data, we designed a self-supervised pretraining method based on contrastive learning and masked image modeling specifically for the dual-branch network, leveraging unlabeled data to enhance model performance. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed Dual-branch SSL Framework with Counterfactual Attention Learning for Histopathology Nuclei Segmentation (DSF-CAL) outperforms existing semantic segmentation networks across multiple datasets. | 2023 | Distribution-Regularized Federated Learning on Non-IID DataabstractFederated learning (FL) has emerged as a popular machine learning paradigm recently. Compared with traditional distributed learning, its unique challenges mainly lie in communication efficiency and non-IID (heterogeneous data) problem. While the widely adopted framework FedAvg can reduce communication overhead significantly, its effectiveness on non-IID data still lacks exploration. In this paper, we study the non-IID problem of FL from the perspective of domain adaptation. We propose a distribution regularization for FL on non-IID data such that the discrepancy of data distributions between clients is reduced. To further reduce the communication cost, we devise two novel distributed learning algorithms, namely rFedAvg and rFedAvg+, for efficiently learning with the distribution regularization. More importantly, we theoretically establish their convergence for strongly convex objectives. Extensive experiments on 4 datasets with both CNN and LSTM as learning models verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms. | 2023 | DM-PFL: Hitchhiking Generic Federated Learning for Efficient Shift-Robust PersonalizationabstractPersonalized federated learning collaboratively trains client-specific models, which holds potential for various mobile and IoT applications with heterogeneous data. However, existing solutions are vulnerable to distribution shifts between training and test data, and involve high training workloads on local devices. These two shortcomings hinder the practical usage of personalized federated learning on real-world mobile applications. To overcome these drawbacks, we explore efficient shift-robust personalization for federated learning. The principle is to hitchhike the global model to improve the shift-robustness of personalized models with minimal extra training overhead. To this end, we present DM-PFL, a novel framework that utilizes a dual masking mechanism to train both global and personalized models with weight-level parameter sharing and end-to-end sparse training. Evaluations on various datasets show that our methods not only improve the test accuracy in presence of test-time distribution shifts but also save the communication and computation costs compared to state-of-the-art personalized federated learning schemes. | 2022 | Fed-LTD: Towards Cross-Platform Ride Hailing via Federated Learning to DispatchabstractLearning based order dispatching has witnessed tremendous success in ride hailing. However, the success halts within individual ride hailing platforms because sharing raw order dispatching data across platforms may leak user privacy and business secrets. Such data isolation not only impairs user experience but also decreases the potential revenues of the platforms. In this paper, we advocate federated order dispatching for cross-platform ride hailing, where multiple platforms collaboratively make dispatching decisions without sharing their local data. Realizing this concept calls for new federated learning strategies that tackle the unique challenges on effectiveness, privacy and efficiency in the context of order dispatching. In response, we devise Federated Learning-to-Dispatch (Fed-LTD), a framework that allows effective order dispatching by sharing both dispatching models and decisions while providing privacy protection of raw data and high efficiency. We validate Fed-LTD via large-scale trace-driven experiments with Didi GAIA dataset. Extensive evaluations show that Fed-LTD outperforms single-platform order dispatching by 10.24% to 54.07% in terms of total revenue. | 2021 | An Efficient Approach for Cross-Silo Federated Learning to RankabstractTraditional learning-to-rank (LTR) models are usually trained in a centralized approach based upon a large amount of data. However, with the increasing awareness of data privacy, it is harder to collect data from multiple owners as before, and the resultant data isolation problem makes the performance of learned LTR models severely compromised. Inspired by the recent progress in federated learning, we propose a novel framework named Cross-Silo Federated Learning-to-Rank (CS-F-LTR), where the efficiency issue becomes the major bottleneck. To deal with the challenge, we first devise a privacy-preserving cross-party term frequency querying scheme based on sketching algorithms and differential privacy. To further improve the overall efficiency, we propose a new structure named reverse top-K sketch (RTK-Sketch) which significantly accelerates the feature generation process while holding theoretical guarantees on accuracy loss. Extensive experiments conducted on public datasets verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach. Yansheng Wang, Yongxin Tong, Dingyuan Shi, Ke Xu 0001 |

| 2021 | Value Function is All You Need: A Unified Learning Framework for Ride Hailing PlatformsabstractLarge ride-hailing platforms, such as DiDi, Uber and Lyft, connect tens of thousands of vehicles in a city to millions of ride demands throughout the day, providing great promises for improving transportation efficiency through the tasks of order dispatching and vehicle repositioning. Existing studies, however, usually consider the two tasks in simplified settings that hardly address the complex interactions between the two, the real-time fluctuations between supply and demand, and the necessary coordinations due to the large-scale nature of the problem. In this paper we propose a unified value-based dynamic learning framework (V1D3) for tackling both tasks. At the center of the framework is a globally shared value function that is updated continuously using online experiences generated from real-time platform transactions. To improve the sample-efficiency and the robustness, we further propose a novel periodic ensemble method combining the fast online learning with a large-scale offline training scheme that leverages the abundant historical driver trajectory data. This allows the proposed framework to adapt quickly to the highly dynamic environment, to generalize robustly to recurrent patterns and to drive implicit coordinations among the population of managed vehicles. Extensive experiments based on real-world datasets show considerably improvements over other recently proposed methods on both tasks. Particularly, V1D3 outperforms the first prize winners of both dispatching and repositioning tracks in the KDD Cup 2020 RL competition, achieving state-of-the-art results on improving both total driver income and user experience related metrics. | 2020 | Federated Latent Dirichlet Allocation: A Local Differential Privacy Based FrameworkabstractLatent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is a widely adopted topic model for industrial-grade text mining applications. However, its performance heavily relies on the collection of large amount of text data from users' everyday life for model training. Such data collection risks severe privacy leakage if the data collector is untrustworthy. To protect text data privacy while allowing accurate model training, we investigate federated learning of LDA models. That is, the model is collaboratively trained between an untrustworthy data collector and multiple users, where raw text data of each user are stored locally and not uploaded to the data collector. To this end, we propose FedLDA, a local differential privacy (LDP) based framework for federated learning of LDA models. Central in FedLDA is a novel LDP mechanism called Random Response with Priori (RRP), which provides theoretical guarantees on both data privacy and model accuracy. We also design techniques to reduce the communication cost between the data collector and the users during model training. Extensive experiments on three open datasets verified the effectiveness of our solution. Yansheng Wang, Yongxin Tong, Dingyuan Shi |

| 2019 | Adaptive Dynamic Bipartite Graph Matching: A Reinforcement Learning ApproachabstractOnline bipartite graph matching is attracting growing research attention due to the development of dynamic task assignment in sharing economy applications, where tasks need be assigned dynamically to workers. Past studies lack practicability in terms of both problem formulation and solution framework. On the one hand, some problem settings in prior online bipartite graph matching research are impractical for real-world applications. On the other hand, existing solutions to online bipartite graph matching are inefficient due to the unnecessary real-time decision making. In this paper, we propose the dynamic bipartite graph matching (DBGM) problem to be better aligned with real-world applications and devise a novel adaptive batch-based solution framework with a constant competitive ratio. As an effective and efficient implementation of the solution framework, we design a reinforcement learning based algorithm, called Restricted Q-learning (RQL), which makes near-optimal decisions on batch splitting. Extensive experimental results on both real and synthetic datasets show that our methods outperform the state-of-the-arts in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. | 2015 | An Energy-Efficient Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Processing Unit for Multiple-Standard Video DecodingabstractA coarse-grained reconfigurable processing unit (RPU) consisting of 16 ×16 multi-functional processing elements (PEs) interconnected by an area-efficient line-switched mesh connect (LSMC) routing is implemented on a 5.4 mm ×3.1 mm die in TSMC 65 nm LP1P8M CMOS technology. A hierarchical configuration context (HCC) organization scheme is proposed to reduce the implementation overhead and the energy dissipation spent on fast reconfiguration. The proposed RPU is integrated into two system-on-a-chips (SoCs), targeting multiple-standard video decoding. The high-performance chip, comprising two RPU processors (named REMUS_HPP), can decode 1920 ×1080 H.264 video streams at 30 frames per second (fps) under 200 MHz. REMUS_HPP achieves a 25% performance gain over the XPP-III reconfigurable processor with only 280 mW power consumption, resulting in a 14.3 × improvement on energy efficiency. The other chip (named REMUS_LPP), targeting low power applications, integrates only one RPU processor. REMUS_LPP can decode 720 ×480 H.264 video streams at 35fps with 24.5 mW under 75 MHz, achieving a 76% reduction in power dissipation and a 3.96 × improvement on energy efficiency compared with the ADRES reconfigurable processor. | 2014 | Configuration approaches to improve computing efficiency of coarse-grained reconfigurable multimedia processorabstractThis paper proposes three configuration approaches to improve computing efficiency of a coarse-grained reconfigurable array, including input data relocation, line-based context switching, and loop interval minimization. These proposed approaches fully exploit the parallelism and pipelining of the reconfigurable array, which reduce interval latency when switching the configuration contexts, and therefore greatly enhance computing efficiency. These proposed techniques are used in a coarse-grained reconfigurable multimedia system (REMUS). Measured results show that, owing to the proposed approaches, REMUS can achieve 1080p@30fps performance for H.264 high profile video decoding under 200MHz working frequency. When normalized to the same technology, REMUS outperforms XPP-III 6.98x in energy efficiency. Chen Yang 0005, Leibo Liu, Yansheng Wang, Shouyi Yin, Peng Cao 0002, Shaojun Wei |

| 2014 | On-Chip Memory Hierarchy in One Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture to Compress Memory Space and to Reduce Reconfiguration Time and Data-Reference TimeabstractThe coarse-grained reconfigurable architecture (CGRA) is proven to be energy efficient in several specific domains. In CGRAs, the on-chip memory hierarchy, which contains the context memory and the data memory organizations, should be well considered to achieve appropriate tradeoffs among three aspects: 1) performance; 2) area; and 3) power. In this paper, two techniques called the hierarchical configuration context (HCC) and the lifetime-based data-memory organization (LDO) focusing on the context memory and the data memory organizations are proposed to compress the on-chip memory space and to reduce the reconfiguration time and the data-reference time. In the HCC, the contexts are constructed in a hierarchical fashion to completely eliminate the repetitive portions of the contexts, not only reducing the overall context storage, but also alleviating the context transportation overhead. A fast context-indexing mechanism in the HCC is proposed to achieve fast reconfiguration, as the hierarchically organized contexts can be located and accessed conveniently. In the LDO, the on-chip data are classified into two types, based on the lifetime of data. The short-lifetime data are stored in the first in first out to increase the reuse ratio of memory space automatically, whereas the long-lifetime data are stored in the radom access memory for several time references. The HCC and the LDO are used in a CGRA core called as reconfigurable processing unit (RPU). Two RPUs are integrated in a reconfigurable computing processor (RCP) called as REconfigurable MUlti-media System, High-Performance Processor (REMUS_HPP). Because of the HCC, compared with a traditional nonhierarchical system, the total context storage required in H.264 decoding is reduced by 77%. Because of the LDO, the normalized on-chip data memory size at same performance level in the REMUS_HPP is only 23.8% and 14.8% of those in XPP-III (a high-performance RCP) and ADRES (a low-power RCP). REMUS_HPP is implemented on a 48.9-mm2silicon with TSMC 65-nm technology, using a 200-MHz working frequency to achieve 1920 × 1088 at 30 fps H.264 high-profile decoding. Compared with XPP-III, the performance of the REMUS_HPP is 1.81× boosted, whereas the energy efficiency is 4.75× higher.
