| 2025 | SetMP: Set Associative Mapping Management for Multi-plane Optimization in SSDsabstractModern solid state drives (SSDs) are composed of a four-level parallel structure, including channels, chips, dies, and planes, to enhance SSD performance with maximum access parallelism. Because the planes within the same die share the same set of control units and peripheral circuits, it generally has to open multiple aligned blocks to enable access parallelism through multi-plane (MP) operations. Such a passive method, however, cannot effectively exploit plane level parallelism, since MP operations can only be triggered when the accessed data pages have the same offset address across the planes. In addition, it will worsen the block open time issue, as multiple aligned blocks are opened to enable MP operations for simultaneous data writing. This, in turn, increases the error rate when reading data from blocks with long open time. This paper introduces SetMP, a novel approach that proactively aggregates requests to exploit plane level parallelism through set associative management. By increasing the frequency of MP operations, SetMP enhances I/O responsiveness while reducing the open time of block associated with maintaining multiple open blocks for MP operations. Evaluation results demonstrate that SetMP achieves an average reduction in I/O latency of 16.9%, without significantly increasing the open time of block, outperforming existing optimization schemes. | 2025 | FuncGenFoil: Airfoil Generation and Editing Model in Function SpaceabstractAircraft manufacturing is the jewel in the crown of industry, in which generating high-fidelity airfoil geometries with controllable and editable representations remains a fundamental challenge. Existing deep learning methods, which typically rely on predefined parametric representations (e.g., Bézier curves) or discrete point sets, face an inherent trade-off between expressive power and resolution adaptability.
To tackle this challenge, we introduce FuncGenFoil, a novel function-space generative model that directly reconstructs airfoil geometries as function curves. Our method inherits the advantages of arbitrary-resolution sampling and smoothness from parametric functions, as well as the strong expressiveness of discrete point-based representations.
Empirical evaluations demonstrate that FuncGenFoil improves upon state-of-the-art methods in airfoil generation, achieving a relative 74.4% reduction in label error and a 23.2% increase in diversity on the AF-200K dataset. Our results highlight the advantages of function-space modeling for aerodynamic shape optimization, offering a powerful and flexible framework for high-fidelity airfoil design. | 2022 | Comparative Explanations of RecommendationsabstractAs recommendation is essentially a comparative (or ranking) process, a good explanation should illustrate to users why an item is believed to be better than another, i.e., comparative explanations about the recommended items. Ideally, after reading the explanations, a user should reach the same ranking of items as the system’s. Unfortunately, little research attention has yet been paid on such comparative explanations. | 2021 | A High-Frequency Pulsating DC-Link for Electric Vehicle Drives with Reduced LossesabstractThis paper proposes a motor drive suitable for electric vehicles (EVs) with notably reduced losses as compared to conventional drives. The proposed drive feeds the dc-link with a dynamically reconfigurable battery formed by cascaded half-bridges containing battery units. The reconfigurable battery concurrently forms a modular multilevel dc-link able to synthesize variable dc-link voltages, which can adjust the dc link voltage to run a motor to operate at the optimum load point or even to contribute to modulation and greatly reduce the switching loss of the main inverter—in this case a standard two-level three-phase inverter. Up to ⅔ switching actions are avoided in the main inverter, which can run at maximum duty cycle and fundamental-frequency commutation. The saved switching effort in the main inverter is shifted to the modular multilevel dc-link, but with much less loss due to the fractionized switching voltage and the use of field-effect transistors (FETs).At high drive speeds, the converter halves the total loss compared to a standard inverter only; at lower speeds and thus smaller modulation indices, the advantage is even more pronounced because of the dynamically lowered dc-link voltage. Other benefits include alleviated insulation stress for motor windings and direct battery balancing. The proposed motor drive is verified on a down-scaled setup with eight modules constituting the dc-link. Zhongxi Li, Aobo Yang, Gerry Chen, Zhiyong Zeng 0002, Angel V. Peterchev, Stefan M. Goetz |

| 2021 | Explanation as a Defense of RecommendationabstractTextual explanations have proved to help improve user satisfaction on machine-made recommendations. However, current mainstream solutions loosely connect the learning of explanation with the learning of recommendation: for example, they are often separately modeled as rating prediction and content generation tasks. In this work, we propose to strengthen their connection by enforcing the idea of sentiment alignment between a recommendation and its corresponding explanation. At training time, the two learning tasks are joined by a latent sentiment vector, which is encoded by the recommendation module and used to make word choices for explanation generation. At both training and inference time, the explanation module is required to generate explanation text that matches sentiment predicted by the recommendation module. Extensive experiments demonstrate our solution outperforms a rich set of baselines in both recommendation and explanation tasks, especially on the improved quality of its generated explanations. More importantly, our user studies confirm our generated explanations help users better recognize the differences between recommended items and understand why an item is recommended.
