Conditional Sentence Generation and Cross-Modal Reranking for Sign Language TranslationabstractSign Language Translation (SLT) aims to generate spoken language translations from sign language videos. Currently, the available sign language datasets are relatively too small to learn the linguistic properties of spoken language. In this paper, towards effective SLT, we propose a novel framework which takes the advantage of the spoken language grammar learnt from a large corpus of text sentences. Our framework consists of three key modules: word existence verification, conditional sentence generation and cross-modal re-ranking. We first check the existence of words in the vocabulary by a series of binary classification in parallel. After that, the appearing words are assembled and guided by a pretrained spoken language generator to produce multiple candidate sentences in spoken language manner. Last but not least, we select the sentence most semantically similar to the input sign video as the translation result with a crossmodal re-ranking model. We evaluate our framework on two large scale continuous SLT benchmarks,i.e., CSL and RWTHPHOENIX-Weather 2014 T. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves promising performance on both datasets. | 2021 | Improving Sign Language Translation With Monolingual Data by Sign Back-TranslationabstractDespite existing pioneering works on sign language translation (SLT), there is a non-trivial obstacle, i.e., the limited quantity of parallel sign-text data. To tackle this parallel data bottleneck, we propose a sign back-translation (SignBT) approach, which incorporates massive spoken language texts into SLT training. With a text-to-gloss translation model, we first back-translate the monolingual text to its gloss sequence. Then, the paired sign sequence is generated by splicing pieces from an estimated gloss-to-sign bank at the feature level. Finally, the synthetic parallel data serves as a strong supplement for the end-to-end training of the encoder-decoder SLT framework. To promote the SLT research, we further contribute CSL-Daily, a large-scale continuous SLT dataset. It provides both spoken language translations and gloss-level annotations. The topic revolves around people’s daily lives (e.g., travel, shopping, medical care), the most likely SLT application scenario. Extensive experimental results and analysis of SLT methods are reported on CSL-Daily. With the proposed sign back-translation method, we obtain a substantial improvement over previous state-of-the-art SLT methods. Hao Zhou 0039, Wengang Zhou 0001, Weizhen Qi, Junfu Pu, Houqiang Li

BANG: Bridging Autoregressive and Non-autoregressive Generation with Large Scale PretrainingabstractIn this paper, we propose BANG, a new pretraining model to Bridge the gap between Autoregressive (AR) and Non-autoregressive (NAR) Generation. AR and NAR generation can be uniformly regarded as to what extent previous tokens can be attended, and BANG bridges AR and NAR generation through designing a novel model structure for large-scale pre-training. A pretrained BANG model can simultaneously support AR, NAR, and semi-NAR generation to meet different requirements. Experiments on question generation (SQuAD 1.1), summarization (XSum), and dialogue generation (PersonaChat) show that BANG improves NAR and semi-NAR performance significantly as well as attaining comparable performance with strong AR pretrained models. Compared with the semi-NAR strong baselines, BANG achieves absolute improvements of 14.01 and 5.24 in the overall scores of SQuAD 1.1 and XSum, respectively. In addition, BANG achieves absolute improvements of 10.73, 6.39, and 5.90 in the overall scores of SQuAD, XSUM, and PersonaChat compared with the NAR strong baselines, respectively. Our code will be made publicly available. Weizhen Qi, Yeyun Gong, Jian Jiao 0007, Weizhu Chen, Dayiheng Liu, Kewen Tang, Houqiang Li, Jiusheng Chen, Ruofei Zhang, Ming Zhou 0001, Nan Duan 0001

EL-Attention: Memory Efficient Lossless Attention for GenerationabstractTransformer model with multi-head attention requires caching intermediate results for efficient inference in generation tasks. However, cache brings new memory-related costs and prevents leveraging larger batch size for faster speed. We propose memory-efficient lossless attention (called EL-attention) to address this issue. It avoids heavy operations for building multi-head keys and values, cache for them is not needed. EL-attention constructs an ensemble of attention results by expanding query while keeping key and value shared. It produces the same result as multi-head attention with less GPU memory and faster inference speed. We conduct extensive experiments on Transformer, BART, and GPT-2 for summarization and question generation tasks. The results show EL-attention speeds up existing models by 1.6x to 5.3x without accuracy loss. Jiusheng Chen, Weizhen Qi, Nikhil Bhendawade, Yeyun Gong, Nan Duan 0001, Ruofei Zhang

Graph-Based Transformer with Cross-Candidate Verification for Semantic ParsingabstractIn this paper, we present a graph-based Transformer for semantic parsing. We separate the semantic parsing task into two steps: 1) Use a sequence-to-sequence model to generate the logical form candidates. 2) Design a graph-based Transformer to rerank the candidates. To handle the structure of logical forms, we incorporate graph information to Transformer, and design a cross-candidate verification mechanism to consider all the candidates in the ranking process. Furthermore, we integrate BERT into our model and jointly train the graph-based Transformer and BERT. We conduct experiments on 3 semantic parsing benchmarks, ATIS, JOBS and Task Oriented semantic Parsing dataset (TOP). Experiments show that our graph-based reranking model achieves results comparable to state-of-the-art models on the ATIS and JOBS datasets. And on the TOP dataset, our model achieves a new state-of-the-art result. Yeyun Gong, Weizhen Qi, Guihong Cao, Jianshu Ji, Xiaola Lin

| 2020 | Multi-level Alignment Pretraining for Multi-lingual Semantic ParsingabstractIn this paper, we present a multi-level alignment pretraining method in a unified architecture for multi-lingual semantic parsing. In this architecture, we use an adversarial training method to align the space of different languages and use sentence level and word level parallel corpus as supervision information to align the semantic of different languages. Finally, we jointly train the multi-level alignment and semantic parsing tasks. We conduct experiments on a publicly available multi-lingual semantic parsing dataset ATIS and a newly constructed dataset.Experimental results show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods on both datasets. | 2019 | CRADLE: cross-backend validation to detect and localize bugs in deep learning librariesabstractDeep learning (DL) systems are widely used in domains including aircraft collision avoidance systems, Alzheimer's disease diagnosis, and autonomous driving cars. Despite the requirement for high reliability, DL systems are difficult to test. Existing DL testing work focuses on testing the DL models, not the implementations (e.g., DL software libraries) of the models. One key challenge of testing DL libraries is the difficulty of knowing the expected output of DL libraries given an input instance. Fortunately, there are multiple implementations of the same DL algorithms in different DL libraries. Thus, we propose CRADLE, a new approach that focuses on finding and localizing bugs in DL software libraries. CRADLE (1) performs cross-implementation inconsistency checking to detect bugs in DL libraries, and (2) leverages anomaly propagation tracking and analysis to localize faulty functions in DL libraries that cause the bugs. We evaluate CRADLE on three libraries (TensorFlow, CNTK, and Theano), 11 datasets (including ImageNet, MNIST, and KGS Go game), and 30 pre-trained models. CRADLE detects 12 bugs and 104 unique inconsistencies, and highlights functions relevant to the causes of inconsistencies for all 104 unique inconsistencies.
