| 2022 | Metadata Caching in Presto: Towards Fast Data ProcessingabstractPresto is an open-source distributed SQL query engine for OLAP, aiming for “SQL on everything”. Since open-sourced in 2013, Presto has been consistently gaining popularity in large-scale data analytics and attracting adoption from a wide range of enterprises. From the development and operation of Presto, we witnessed a significant amount of CPU consumption on parsing column-oriented data files in Presto worker nodes. This blocks some companies, including Meta, from increasing analytical data volumes. In this paper, we present a metadata caching layer, built on top of the Alluxio SDK cache and incorporated in each Presto worker node, to cache the intermediate results in file parsing. The metadata cache provides two caching methods: caching the decompressed metadata bytes from raw data files and caching the deserialized metadata objects. Our evaluation of the TPC-DS benchmark on Presto demonstrates that when the cache is warm, the first method can reduce the query’s CPU consumption by 10%-20%, whereas the second method can minimize the CPU usage by 20%-40%. | 2022 | From Batch Processing to Real Time Analytics: Running Presto® at ScaleabstractPresto is an open source distributed query engine used widely at Facebook, Uber, Twitter, Pinterest, and many other internet companies. Since open sourced in 2013, the Presto community has made several rounds of design and implementations, to support a variety of use cases, including interactive analytics, real time reporting and dashboard, ETL workloads, A/B testing, monitoring and alerts, etc. In this paper, we'd like to introduce some of the most important features and performance improvements the open source Presto community made in recent years, which enables companies running Presto at scale, supporting millions of queries per day, with hundreds of thousands of machines. Specifically, how Presto provides unified SQL on heterogeneous storage systems without data copy; how Presto deals with complex data, including nested columnar data and schema evolution; How Presto supports geospatial queries efficiently, and how file list cache works in Presto. We also talk about cluster federation, and Presto on cloud. Experimental results and our production experience could help others running interactive SQL systems at scale. | 2021 | Forecasting SQL Query Cost at TwitterabstractWith the advent of the Big Data era, it is usually computationally expensive to calculate the resource usages of a SQL query with traditional DBMS approaches. Can we estimate the cost of each query more efficiently without any computation in a SQL engine kernel? Can machine learning techniques help to estimate SQL query resource utilization? The answers are yes. We propose a SQL query cost predictor service, which employs machine learning techniques to train models from historical query request logs and rapidly forecasts the CPU and memory resource usages of online queries without any computation in a SQL engine. At Twitter, infrastructure engineers are maintaining a large-scale SQL federation system across on-premises and cloud data centers for serving ad-hoc queries. The proposed service can help to improve query scheduling by relieving the issue of imbalanced online analytical processing (OLAP) workloads in the SQL engine clusters. It can also assist in enabling preemptive scaling. Additionally, the proposed approach uses plain SQL statements for the model training and online prediction, indicating it is both hardware and software-agnostic. The method can be generalized to broader SQL systems and heterogeneous environments. The models can achieve 97.9% accuracy for CPU usage prediction and 97% accuracy for memory usage prediction. | 2021 | CWcollab: A Context-Aware Web-Based Collaborative Multimedia SystemabstractRemote collaboration tools for conferencing and presentation are gaining significant popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Most prior work has issues, such as a) limited support for media types, b) lack of interactivity, for example, an efficient replay mechanism, c) large bandwidth consumption for screen sharing tools. In this paper, we propose a general-purpose multimedia collaboration platform-CWcollab. It supports collaboration on general multimedia by using simple messages to represent media controls with an object-prioritized synchronization approach. Thus, CWcollab can not only support fine-grained accurate collaboration, but also rich functionalities such as replay of these collaboration events. The evaluation shows hundreds of kilobytes can be enough to store the events in a collaboration session for accurate replays, compared with hundreds of megabytes of Google Hangouts. | 2019 | Caladrius: A Performance Modelling Service for Distributed Stream Processing SystemsabstractReal-time stream processing has become increasingly important in recent years and has led to the development of a multitude of stream processing systems. Given the varying job workloads that characterize stream processing, these systems need to be tuned and adjusted to maintain performance targets in the face of variation in incoming traffic. Current auto-scaling systems adopt a series of trials to approach a job's expected performance due to a lack of performance modelling tools. We find that general traffic trends in most jobs lend themselves well to prediction. Based on this premise, we built a system called Caladrius that forecasts the future traffic load of a stream processing job and predicts its processing performance after a proposed change to the parallelism of its operators. Experimental results show that Caladrius is able to estimate a job's throughput performance and CPU load under a given scaling configuration.
