| 2025 | One-Step Event-Driven High-Speed AutofocusabstractHigh-speed autofocus in extreme scenes remains a significant challenge. Traditional methods rely on repeated sampling around the focus position, resulting in "focus hunting". Event-driven methods have advanced focusing speed and improved performance in low-light conditions; however, current approaches still require at least one lengthy round of "focus hunting", involving the collection of a complete focus stack. We introduce the Event Laplacian Product (ELP) focus detection function, which combines event data with grayscale Laplacian information, redefining focus search as a detection task. This innovation enables the first one-step event-driven autofocus, cutting focusing time by up to two-thirds and reducing focusing error by 24 times on the DAVIS346 dataset and 22 times on the EVK4 dataset. Additionally, we present an auto-focus pipeline tailored for event-only cameras, achieving accurate results across a range of challenging motion and lighting conditions. | 2024 | Minimalist and High-Quality Panoramic Imaging With PSF-Aware TransformersabstractHigh-quality panoramic images with a Field of View (FoV) of 360° are essential for contemporary panoramic computer vision tasks. However, conventional imaging systems come with sophisticated lens designs and heavy optical components. This disqualifies their usage in many mobile and wearable applications where thin and portable, minimalist imaging systems are desired. In this paper, we propose a Panoramic Computational Imaging Engine (PCIE) to achieve minimalist and high-quality panoramic imaging. With less than three spherical lenses, a Minimalist Panoramic Imaging Prototype (MPIP) is constructed based on the design of the Panoramic Annular Lens (PAL), but with low-quality imaging results due to aberrations and small image plane size. We propose two pipelines, i.e. Aberration Correction (AC) and Super-Resolution and Aberration Correction (SR&AC), to solve the image quality problems of MPIP, with imaging sensors of small and large pixel size, respectively. To leverage the prior information of the optical system, we propose a Point Spread Function (PSF) representation method to produce a PSF map as an additional modality. A PSF-aware Aberration-image Recovery Transformer (PART) is designed as a universal network for the two pipelines, in which the self-attention calculation and feature extraction are guided by the PSF map. We train PART on synthetic image pairs from simulation and put forward the PALHQ dataset to fill the gap of real-world high-quality PAL images for low-level vision. A comprehensive variety of experiments on synthetic and real-world benchmarks demonstrates the impressive imaging results of PCIE and the effectiveness of the PSF representation. We further deliver heuristic experimental findings for minimalist and high-quality panoramic imaging, in terms of the choices of prototype and pipeline, network architecture, training strategies, and dataset construction. Our dataset and code will be available at https://github.com/zju-jiangqi/PCIE-PART. Shaohua Gao, Kailun Yang 0001, Zhonghua Yi, Hao Shi 0004, Lei Sun 0009, Kaiwei Wang |

| 2021 | TCP-NeuRoc: Neural Adaptive TCP Congestion Control With Online Changepoint DetectionabstractCongestion control is a fundamental mechanism for TCP protocol, which has been extensively studied in the past three decades. However, our experimental evaluations show that the state-of-art congestion control algorithms such as Cubic and BBR are far from optimal: they have unresolved issues such as insufficient usage of available bandwidth, inadaptable to dynamic bandwidth variants, and compromising on one or more performance dimensions. To address these challenges, we propose a novel congestion control mechanism called NeuRoc that coordinately uses online changepoint detection and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) technique to generate the optimal congestion control policy, which allows TCP operating at Kleinrock ’s optimal operation point to achieve fully bandwidth usage and low latency. To address the practical issues of deploying the deep learning based congestion control mechanism, we propose a cold-started training and deployment framework to reduce the cost of bootstrap. We implement NeuRoc on an emulation platform which connects to the Linux network protocol stack through virtual network interfaces. Extensive experiments show that NeuRoc achieves the best throughput-latency tradeoff compared with the state-of-the-arts in a variety of scenarios. Shaohua Gao, Yeting Xu, Sanglu Lu |

| 2019 | ReLeS: A Neural Adaptive Multipath Scheduler based on Deep Reinforcement LearningabstractThe Multipath TCP (MPTCP) protocol, featured by its ability of capacity aggregation across multiple links and connectivity maintenance against single-path failure, has been attracting increasing attention from the industry and academy. Multipath packet scheduling is a unique and fundamental mechanism for the design and implementation of MPTCP, which is responsible for distributing the traffic over multiple subflows. The existing multipath schedulers are facing the challenges of network heterogeneities, comprehensive QoS goals, and dynamic environments, etc. To address these challenges, we propose ReLeS, a Reinforcement Learning based Scheduler for MPTCP. ReLeS uses modern deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques to learn a neural network to generate the control policy for packet scheduling. It adopts a comprehensive reward function that takes diverse QoS characteristics into consideration to optimize packet scheduling. To support real-time scheduling, we propose an asynchronous training algorithm that enables parallel execution of packet scheduling, data collecting, and neural network training. We implement ReLeS in the Linux kernel and evaluate it over both emulated and real network conditions. Extensive experiments show that ReLeS significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art schedulers. | 2019 | SmartCC: A Reinforcement Learning Approach for Multipath TCP Congestion Control in Heterogeneous NetworksabstractThe Multipath TCP (MPTCP) protocol has been standardized by the IETF as an extension of conventional TCP, which enables multi-homed devices to establish multiple paths for simultaneous data transmission. Congestion control is a fundamental mechanism for the design and implementation of MPTCP. Due to the diverse QoS characteristics of heterogeneous links, existing multipath congestion control mechanisms suffer from a number of performance problems such as bufferbloat, suboptimal bandwidth usage, etc. In this paper, we propose a learning-based multipath congestion control approach called SmartCC to deal with the diversities of multiple communication path in heterogeneous networks. SmartCC adopts an asynchronous reinforcement learning framework to learn a set of congestion rules, which allows the sender to observe the environment and take actions to adjust the subflows' congestion windows adaptively to fit different network situations. To deal with the problem of infinite states in high-dimensional space, we propose a hierarchical tile coding algorithm for state aggregation and a function estimation approach for Q-learning, which can derive the optimal policy efficiently. Due to the asynchronous design of SmartCC, the processes of model training and execution are decoupled, and the learning process will not introduce extra delay and overhead on the decision making process in MPTCP congestion control. We conduct extensive experiments for performance evaluation, which show that SmartCC improves the aggregate throughput significantly and outperforms the state-of-the-art mechanisms on a variety of performance metrics.
