| 2025 | Mavors: Multi-granularity Video Representation for Multimodal Large Language ModelabstractLong-context video understanding in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) faces a critical challenge: balancing computational efficiency with the retention of fine-grained spatio-temporal patterns. Existing approaches (e.g., sparse sampling, dense sampling with low resolution, and token compression) suffer from significant information loss in temporal dynamics, spatial details, or subtle interactions, particularly in videos with complex motion or varying resolutions. To address this, we propose Mavors, a novel framework that introduces Multi-granularity video representation for holistic long-video modeling. Specifically, Mavors directly encodes raw video content into latent representations through two core components: 1) an Intra-chunk Vision Encoder (IVE) that preserves high-resolution spatial features via 3D convolutions and Vision Transformers, and 2) an Inter-chunk Feature Aggregator (IFA) that establishes temporal coherence across chunks using transformer-based dependency modeling with chunk-level rotary position encodings. Moreover, the framework unifies image and video understanding by treating images as single-frame videos via sub-image decomposition. Experiments across diverse benchmarks demonstrate Mavors' superiority in maintaining both spatial fidelity and temporal continuity, significantly outperforming existing methods in tasks requiring fine-grained spatio-temporal reasoning. | 2025 | MME-VideoOCR: Evaluating OCR-Based Capabilities of Multimodal LLMs in Video ScenariosabstractMultimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have achieved considerable accuracy in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) from static images. However, their efficacy in video OCR is significantly diminished due to factors such as motion blur, temporal variations, and visual effects inherent in video content. To provide clearer guidance for training practical MLLMs, we introduce MME-VideoOCR benchmark, which encompasses a comprehensive range of video OCR application scenarios. MME-VideoOCR features 10 task categories comprising 25 individual tasks and spans 44 diverse scenarios. These tasks extend beyond text recognition to incorporate deeper comprehension and reasoning of textual content within videos. The benchmark consists of 1,464 videos with varying resolutions, aspect ratios, and durations, along with 2,000 meticulously curated, manually annotated question-answer pairs. We evaluate 18 state-of-the-art MLLMs on MME-VideoOCR, revealing that even the best-performing model (Gemini-2.5 Pro) achieves only an accuracy of 73.7%. Fine-grained analysis indicates that while existing MLLMs demonstrate strong performance on tasks where relevant texts are contained within a single or few frames, they exhibit limited capability in effectively handling tasks that demand holistic video comprehension. These limitations are especially evident in scenarios that require spatio-temporal reasoning, cross-frame information integration, or resistance to language prior bias. Our findings also highlight the importance of high-resolution visual input and sufficient temporal coverage for reliable OCR in dynamic video scenarios. | 2023 | DAIS: Automatic Channel Pruning via Differentiable Annealing Indicator SearchabstractThe convolutional neural network (CNN) has achieved great success in fulfilling computer vision tasks despite large computation overhead against efficient deployment. Channel pruning is usually applied to reduce the model redundancy while preserving the network structure, such that the pruned network can be easily deployed in practice. However, existing channel pruning methods require hand-crafted rules, which can result in a degraded model performance with respect to the tremendous potential pruning space given large neural networks. In this article, we introduce differentiable annealing indicator search (DAIS) that leverages the strength of neural architecture search in the channel pruning and automatically searches for the effective pruned model with given constraints on computation overhead. Specifically, DAIS relaxes the binarized channel indicators to be continuous and then jointly learns both indicators and model parameters via bi-level optimization. To bridge the non-negligible discrepancy between the continuous model and the target binarized model, DAIS proposes an annealing-based procedure to steer the indicator convergence toward binarized states. Moreover, DAIS designs various regularizations based on a priori structural knowledge to control the pruning sparsity and to improve model performance. Experimental results show that DAIS outperforms state-of-the-art pruning methods on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet. | 2021 | EPASS360: QoE-Aware 360-Degree Video Streaming Over Mobile DevicesabstractThe 360-degree video streaming system delivers a monocular panoramic video surrounding the user, and the user can change the viewing direction of mobile devices to see different parts of the video through the “viewport”. Due to the limited network bandwidth, playbacks of high-resolution 360-degree videos often suffer from rebuffering, while too much bandwidth is wasted in delivering those out-of-viewport parts that the user never watches. In this article, we present an Ensemble Prediction and Allocation based Streaming System, named as EPASS360, for delivering high Quality of Experience (QoE) 360-degree videos. The prediction model takes advantages of ensemble learning, providing high accuracy on the prediction of viewports. The allocation model divides a video into tiles, and allocates high resolution to tiles where a user's viewpoint may appear in the future by solving the QoE-aware optimization problem. Trace-driven emulation on real-world datasets shows that EPASS360 enhances the QoE in various scenarios compared to state-of-the-art streaming approaches. Experiments on the head-mounted device and the hand-held device over real-world Internet confirm the high user experience of EPASS360. | 2020 | A New Perspective for Flexible Feature Gathering in Scene Text Recognition Via Character Anchor PoolingabstractIrregular scene text recognition has attracted much attention from the research community, mainly due to the complexity of shapes of text in natural scene. However, recent methods either rely on shape-sensitive modules such as bounding box regression, or discard sequence learning. To tackle these issues, we propose a pair of coupling modules, termed as Character Anchoring Module (CAM) and Anchor Pooling Module (APM), to extract high-level semantics from two-dimensional space to form feature sequences. The proposed CAM localizes the text in a shape-insensitive way by design by anchoring characters individually. APM then interpolates and gathers features flexibly along the character anchors which enables sequence learning. The complementary modules realize a harmonic unification of spatial information and sequence learning. With the proposed modules, our recognition system surpasses previous state-of-the-art scores on irregular and perspective text datasets, including, ICDAR 2015, CUTE, and Total-Text, while paralleling state-of-the-art performance on regular text datasets. | 2020 | Preference-Aware Mask for Session-Based Recommendation with Bidirectional TransformerabstractUser profiles are not always visible in E-commerce scenarios, in which case the recommender systems can only summarize users' preferences through sessions of historical records. However, the items in a session might be irrelevant to users' preferences or become the disturbances for modelling the users' portraits, and thus degrade the performance of the recommender systems. In this paper, we propose the preference-aware mask to capture user preferences over the items within the sessions, which adapts to the preference-irrelevant items within the sessions and provides explainable evidence for the recommendation. Evaluation over three real-world datasets verifies that MBTREC performs well on the new-item recommendation task, and outperforms several state-of-the-art recommender systems on the general metrics. | 2020 | PERM: Neural Adaptive Video Streaming with Multi-path TransmissionabstractThe multi-path transmission techniques enable multiple paths to maximize resource usage and increase throughput in transmission, which have been installed over mobile devices in recent years. For video streaming applications, compared to the single-path transmission, the multi-path techniques can establish multiple subflows simultaneously to extend the available bandwidth for streaming high-quality videos in mobile devices. Existing adaptive video streaming systems have difficulty in harnessing multi-path scheduling and balancing the tradeoff between the quality of experience (QoE) and quality of service (QoS) concerns. In this paper, we propose an actor-critic network based on Periodical Experience Replay for Multi-path video streaming (PERM). Specifically, PERM employs two actor modules and a critic module: the two actor modules respectively assign the path usage of each subflow and select bitrates for the next chunk of the video, while the critic module predicts the overall objectives. We conduct trace-driven emulation and real-world testbed experiment to examine the performance of PERM, and results show that PERM outperforms state-of-the-art multi-path and single path streaming systems, with an improvement of 10%- 15% on the QoE and QoS metrics. | 2019 | Symmetry-Constrained Rectification Network for Scene Text RecognitionabstractReading text in the wild is a very challenging task due to the diversity of text instances and the complexity of natural scenes. Recently, the community has paid increasing attention to the problem of recognizing text instances with irregular shapes. One intuitive and effective way to handle this problem is to rectify irregular text to a canonical form before recognition. However, these methods might struggle when dealing with highly curved or distorted text instances. To tackle this issue, we propose in this paper a Symmetry-constrained Rectification Network (ScRN) based on local attributes of text instances, such as center line, scale and orientation. Such constraints with an accurate description of text shape enable ScRN to generate better rectification results than existing methods and thus lead to higher recognition accuracy. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on text with both regular and irregular shapes. Specifically, the system outperforms existing algorithms by a large margin on datasets that contain quite a proportion of irregular text instances, e.g., ICDAR 2015, SVT-Perspective and CUTE80.
