1995 Design of a Reusable IR Framework
abstract
In this paper, we describe the design of a reusable IR framework, called FIRE, that is being implemented to facilitate the development of IR systems. In addition, FIRE is designed to support the experimental evahtation of both indexing and retrieval techniques.First, we discuss the development of reusable software in the IR domain and derive essential criteria for the design of an IR framework.NexL we sketch the object model developed for FIRE.We present the basic concepts and their modeling and show how the components interact when performing indexing and retrieval tasks.

1993 Concept Based Query Expansion
abstract
Query expansion methods have been studied for a long time - with debatable success in many instances. In this paper we present a probabilistic query expansion model based on a similarity thesaurus which was constructed automatically. A similarity thesaurus reflects domain knowledge about the particular collection from which it is constructed. We address the two important issues with query expansion: the selection and the weighting of additional search terms. In contrast to earlier methods, our queries are expanded by adding those terms that are most similar to the concept of the query, rather than selecting terms that are similar to the query terms. Our experiments show that this kind of query expansion results in a notable improvement in the retrieval effectiveness when measured using both recall-precision and usefulness.

1992 Object recognition: the utopian method is dead; the time for combining simple methods has come
abstract
Object recognition methods are usually suited to objects which contain specific kinds of features. However, a collection of real world objects seldom contains only one kind of feature. The premise of the paper is that it would be possible to recognize more objects if the results from differing methods were combined. The combination is not only to widen the domain of discourse of objects to be recognized but also to help improve the quality of the recognition. The authors propose a scheme in which the results from more than one method can be combined. The authors illustrate their scheme with an implementation which combines three methods for object recognition: one method uses geometric features; the second is appropriate for jagged structures in objects; the third is for objects which can be well described with a skeleton. The authors then present some results.>

1989 Retrieving Highly Dynamic, Widely Distributed Information
abstract
Wide area networks provide a variety of information sources which can be exploited only by appropriate information retrieval techniques such as repeated automatic query of remote databases and bulletin boards. Distinctive features of the content and access methods of information on wide area nets are discussed from an IR perspective. The development, algorithms, and analysis of a functioning system are also presented.

1978 A graphics-based programming-support system
abstract
A programming support system using extended Nassi-Shneiderman diagrams (NSD) is described. The aim of the work is to develop techniques for improving the quality and cost of specifying, documenting and producing computer programs. NSD's can be executed interpretively or compiled to produce running code. The system implementation has begun and charts can be drawn on a variety of display devices. The system is being developed using the Picture Building System developed earlier.
