| 2025 | Sparsegs: Sparse View Synthesis Using 3D Gaussian Splattingabstract3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has recently enabled real-time rendering of unbounded 3D scenes for novel view synthesis. However, this technique requires dense training views to accurately reconstruct 3D geometry. A limited number of input views will significantly degrade reconstruction quality, resulting in artifacts such as “floaters” and “background collapse” at unseen viewpoints. In this work, we introduce SparseGS, an efficient training pipeline designed to address the limitations of 3DGS in scenarios with sparse training views. SparseGS incorporates depth priors, novel depth rendering techniques, and a pruning heuristic to mitigate floater artifacts, alongside an Unseen Viewpoint Regularization module to alleviate background collapses. Our extensive evaluations on the Mip-NeRF360, LLFF, and DTU datasets demonstrate that SparseGS achieves highquality reconstruction in both unbounded and forwardfacing scenarios, with as few as 12 and 3 input images, respectively, while maintaining fast training and real-time rendering capabilities. | 2025 | Personalized Restoration via Dual-Pivot TuningabstractGenerative diffusion models can serve as priors, ensuring that image restoration solutions adhere to natural image manifolds. For facial images, however, personalized priors are essential to accurately reconstruct individual-specific facial features. We propose Dual-Pivot Tuning - a simple yet effective two-stage approach to personalize blind restoration systems while preserving general prior integrity. Our key observation is that for efficient personalization, the diffusion model should be tuned around a fixed textual pivot in the first step, while in the second step a guiding network should be tuned in a generic (non-personalized) manner, using the personalized diffusion model as a fixed "pivot". This approach ensures that personalization does not interfere with the restoration process, producing results with a natural appearance that show high fidelity to both identity and degraded image attributes. We conducted extensive experiments with images of widely recognized individuals, evaluating our approach both qualitatively and quantitatively against relevant baselines. Notably, our personalized prior not only achieves superior identity fidelity, but also outperforms state-of-the-art generic priors in terms of overall image quality. | 2024 | Feature 3DGS: Supercharging 3D Gaussian Splatting to Enable Distilled Feature Fieldsabstract3D scene representations have gained immense popularity in recent years. Methods that use Neural Radiance fields are versatile for traditional tasks such as novel view synthesis. In recent times, some work has emerged that aims to extend the functionality of NeRF beyond view synthesis, for semantically aware tasks such as editing and segmentation using 3D feature field distillation from 2D foundation models. However, these methods have two major limitations: (a) they are limited by the rendering speed of NeRF pipelines, and (b) implicitly represented feature fields suffer from continuity artifacts reducing feature quality. Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting has shown state-of-the-art performance on real-time radiance field rendering. In this work, we go one step further: in addition to radiance field rendering, we enable 3D Gaussian splatting on arbitrary-dimension semantic features via 2D foundation model distillation. This translation is not straightforward: naively incorporating feature fields in the 3DGS framework encounters significant challenges, notably the disparities in spatial resolution and channel consistency between RGB images and feature maps. We propose architectural and training changes to efficiently avert this problem. Our proposed method is general, and our experiments showcase novel view semantic segmentation, language-guided editing and segment anything through learning feature fields from state-of-the-art 2D foundation models such as SAM and CLIP-LSeg. Across experiments, our distillation method is able to provide comparable or better results, while being significantly faster to both train and render. Additionally, to the best of our knowledge, we are the first method to enable point and bounding-box prompting for radiance field manipulation, by leveraging the SAM model. | 2022 | Synthetic Generation of Face Videos with Plethysmograph PhysiologyabstractAccelerated by telemedicine, advances in Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) are beginning to offer a viable path toward non-contact physiological measurement. Unfortunately, the datasets for rPPG are limited as they require videos of the human face paired with ground-truth, synchronized heart rate data from a medical-grade health monitor. Also troubling is that the datasets are not inclusive of diverse populations, i.e., current real rPPG facial video datasets are imbalanced in terms of races or skin tones, leading to accuracy disparities on different demographic groups. This paper proposes a scalable biophysical learning based method to generate physio-realistic synthetic rPPG videos given any reference image and target rPPG signal and shows that it could further improve the state-of-the-art physiological measurement and reduce the bias among different groups. We also collect the largest rPPG dataset of its kind (UCLA-rPPG) with a diverse presence of subject skin tones, in the hope that this could serve as a benchmark dataset for different skin tones in this area and ensure that advances of the technique can benefit all people for healthcare equity. | 2022 | ForceSight: Non-Contact Force Sensing with Laser Speckle ImagingabstractForce sensing has been a key enabling technology for a wide range of interfaces such as digitally enhanced body and world surfaces for touch interactions. Additionally, force often contains rich contextual information about user activities and can be used to enhance machine perception for improved user and environment awareness. To sense force, conventional approaches rely on contact sensors made of pressure-sensitive materials such as piezo films/discs or force-sensitive resistors. We present ForceSight, a non-contact force sensing approach using laser speckle imaging. Our key observation is that object surfaces deform in the presence of force. This deformation, though very minute, manifests as observable and discernible laser speckle shifts, which we leverage to sense the applied force. This non-contact force-sensing capability opens up new opportunities for rich interactions and can be used to power user-/environment-aware interfaces. We first built and verified the model of laser speckle shift with surface deformations. To investigate the feasibility of our approach, we conducted studies on metal, plastic, wood, along with a wide variety of materials. Additionally, we included supplementary tests to fully tease out the performance of our approach. Finally, we demonstrated the applicability of ForceSight with several demonstrative example applications. Siyou Pei, Pradyumna Chari, Xue Wang 0015, Achuta Kadambi, Yang Zhang 0041 |

| 2022 | Blending camera and 77 GHz radar sensing for equitable, robust plethysmographyabstractWith the resurgence of non-contact vital sign sensing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, remote heart-rate monitoring has gained significant prominence. Many existing methods use cameras; however previous work shows a performance loss for darker skin tones. In this paper, we show through light transport analysis that the camera modality is fundamentally biased against darker skin tones. We propose to reduce this bias through multi-modal fusion with a complementary and fairer modality - radar. Through a novel debiasing oriented fusion framework, we achieve performance gains over all tested baselines and achieve skin tone fairness improvements over the RGB modality. That is, the associated Pareto frontier between performance and fairness is improved when compared to the RGB modality. In addition, performance improvements are obtained over the radar-based method, with small trade-offs in fairness. We also open-source the largest multi-modal remote heart-rate estimation dataset of paired camera and radar measurements with a focus on skin tone representation.
