2026 XRefine: Attention-Guided Keypoint Match Refinement
abstract
Sparse keypoint matching is crucial for 3D vision tasks, yet current keypoint detectors often produce spatially inaccurate matches. Existing refinement methods mitigate this issue through alignment of matched keypoint locations, but they are typically detector-specific, requiring retraining for each keypoint detector. We introduce XRefine, a novel, detector-agnostic approach for sub-pixel keypoint refinement that operates solely on image patches centered at matched keypoints. Our cross-attention-based architecture learns to predict refined keypoint coordinates without relying on internal detector representations, enabling generalization across detectors. Furthermore, XRefine can be extended to handle multi-view feature tracks. Experiments on MegaDepth, KITTI, and ScanNet demonstrate that the approach consistently improves geometric estimation accuracy, achieving superior performance compared to existing refinement methods while maintaining runtime efficiency. Our code and trained models can be found at https://github.com/boschresearch/xrefine.

2022 HD Ground - A Database for Ground Texture Based Localization
abstract
We present the HD Ground Database, a comprehensive database for ground texture based localization. It contains sequences of a variety of textures, obtained using a downward facing camera. In contrast to existing databases of ground images, the HD Ground Database is larger, has a greater variety of textures, and has a higher image resolution with less motion blur. Also, our database enables the first systematic study of how natural changes of the ground that occur over time affect localization performance, and it allows to examine a teach-and-repeat navigation scenario. We use the HD Ground Database to evaluate four state-of-the-art localization approaches for global localization, localization with the approximate pose being known, and relative localization.

2020 Ground Texture Based Localization Using Compact Binary Descriptors
abstract
Ground texture based localization is a promising approach to achieve high-accuracy positioning of vehicles. We present a self-contained method that can be used for global localization as well as for subsequent local localization updates, i.e. it allows a robot to localize without any knowledge of its current whereabouts, but it can also take advantage of a prior pose estimate to reduce computation time significantly. Our method is based on a novel matching strategy, which we call identity matching, that is based on compact binary feature descriptors. Identity matching treats pairs of features as matches only if their descriptors are identical. While other methods for global localization are faster to compute, our method reaches higher localization success rates, and can switch to local localization after the initial localization.

2020 Ground Texture Based Localization: Do We Need to Detect Keypoints?
abstract
Localization using ground texture images recorded with a downward-facing camera is a promising approach to achieve reliable high-accuracy vehicle positioning. A common way to accomplish the task is to focus on prominent features of the ground texture such as stones and cracks. Our results indicate that with an approximately known camera pose it is sufficient to use arbitrary ground regions, i.e. extracting features at random positions without significant loss in localization performance. Additionally, we propose a real-time capable CPU-only localization method based on this idea, and suggest possible improvements for further research.

2019 Explore, Approach, and Terminate: Evaluating Subtasks in Active Visual Object Search Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning
abstract
Searching for objects and distinguishing task-relevant objects from others is a key requirement for service robots. We propose a reinforcement learning solution to the active visual object search problem. Our method successfully learns to explore the environment, to approach the target object, and to decide when to terminate the search as the target object has been found. We demonstrate the efficiency of our solution on a dataset of real-world images collected by a robot. Our approach outperforms state-space planning or other baseline search strategies, reaching a higher success rate in a shorter time. We also study individual subtasks of active visual object search. Although strong baselines exist for the subtasks, our RL solution outperforms them in the overall search task.
