| 2024 | M3XU: Achieving High-Precision and Complex Matrix Multiplication with Low-Precision MXUsabstractBeyond the high-profile artificial intelligence and machine learning ($\mathrm{AI} / \mathrm{ML}$) workloads, the demand for high-performance matrix operations on standard and complex floating-point numbers remains strong but underserved. However, the widely adopted low-precision matrix processing units (MXUs) can only fulfill the need for AI/ML workloads, which are underutilized or idle when running applications outside their target domains. This paper presents $\mathbf{M}^{3} \mathbf{X U}$, multi-mode matrix processing units that support IEEE 754 single-precision and complex 32bit floating-point numbers. $\mathbf{M}^{3} \mathbf{X U}$ does not rely on more precise but costly multipliers. Instead, $\mathbf{M}^{3} \mathbf{X U}$ proposes a multi-step approach that extends existing MXUs for AI/ML workloads. The resulting $\mathbf{M}^{3} \mathbf{X U}$ can seamlessly upgrade existing systems without programmers’ efforts and maintain the bandwidth demand of existing memory subsystems. This paper evaluates $\mathbf{M}^{3} \mathbf{X U}$ with full-system emulation and hardware synthesis. $\mathrm{M}^{3} \mathbf{X U}$ can achieve a $3.64 \times$ speedup for 32 -bit matrix multiplications and $3.51 \times$ speedup for complex number operations on average compared with conventional vector processing units. | 2022 | Hybrid Precoding Baseband Processor for 64 × 64 Millimeter Wave MIMO SystemsabstractThis paper presents a hybrid precoding processor for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. The proposed architecture supports 64 antennas with 4-to-8 RF chains, and 4-bit phase resolution for each phase shifter in the analog beamformer. A polar decomposition (PD) engine is designed to achieve a 2.4-to-$8.6\times $lower latency with 1.5-to-$1.7\times $less normalized gate count compared to the singular value decomposition (SVD)-based implementation for the same functionality. Multiplicands are combined to reduce 55% area by utilizing the distributive property. Approximate phase extraction and low-precision multiplication for quantized phase extraction are adopted, which leads to 43% and 41% area reductions, respectively. The proposed hybrid precoding processor is designed in a 40-nm CMOS technology. It delivers a throughput of up to 10,288 kMat/s and consumes 170.9 mW at 278 MHz. It outperforms the state-of-the-art hybrid precoding processors with 5.5-$13.7\times $higher normalized area efficiency and 6.9-$38.4\times $lower normalized energy. | 2020 | Equivalent Capacitance Guided Dummy Fill Insertion for Timing and ManufacturabilityabstractTo improve manufacturability, dummy fill insertion is widely adopted for reducing the thickness variation after chemical mechanical polishing. However, inserted metal fills induce significant coupling to nearby signal nets, thus possibly incurring timing degradation. Existing timing-aware fill insertion strategies focus on optimizing induced coupling capacitance instead of resultant equivalent capacitance. Therefore, the impact on timing cannot be fully captured. In contrast, in this paper, we analyze equivalent capacitance friendly regions for dummy fills. The analysis can wisely guide dummy fill insertion to prevent unwanted and unnecessary increase in the resultant equivalent capacitance of timing critical nets. Experimental results based on the ICCAD 2018 CAD Contest benchmark suite show that our solution outperforms the contest winning teams and state-of-the-art work. Moreover, our analysis results are highly correlated to actual equivalent capacitance values and indeed provide accurate guidance for timing-aware dummy fill insertion. | 2020 | Iterative Receiver with a Lattice-Reduction-Aided MIMO Detector for IEEE 802.11axabstractThis paper presents the first 802.11ax compliant iterative detection and decoding (IDD) receiver that supports up to 4×4 1024-QAM MIMO detection in the open literature. Soft-input-soft-output (SISO) MIMO detection is implemented with a lattice reduction aided (LRA) K-best searcher and a max-log list demapper. A hardware-efficient IDD receiver is proposed to achieve the required packet-rate (PER) with a feasible latency. The extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart is utilized to reduce the number of iterations for IDD. Given the 802.11ax latency constraint, the performance, power, area (PPA) design space is explored to identify the optimal IDD receiver architecture. 50% of IDD inner iterations are reduced with only a 0.05dB loss in PER. The proposed IDD receiver achieves a 1dB improvement in PER with 3.6× smaller area and 3.0× lower power consumption when compared to the best non-IDD receiver.
