2022 Fast Algorithm for Big Data Summarization with Knapsack and Partition Matroid Constraints
abstract
As an effective tool to extract representative summary from big data, data summarization is often cast into a submodular maximization problem. Although submodular maximization problem has a long research history, and many related algorithms have been born, these algorithms often have high computational complexity and are difficult to apply to the field of big data. Therefore, in recent years, research on low-time complexity algorithms has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, we mainly focus on the non-monotone submodular maximization problem under the setting of a knapsack and a partition matroid constraints. To solve it, we design a practical, effective and efficient algorithm called FASKP, that can achieve an approximation ratio of near 7.2 + ϵ using near linear runing time. As far as we know, the FASKP algorithm achieves the best approximate guarantee compared to existing algorithms with low-time complexity. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to apply FASKP in three real data summarization applications: image summarization (10K images), movie recommendation (11K movies), and revenue maximization on social networks (Youtube). Experimental results in real scenarios show that, compared with existing algorithms, the FASKP algorithm can consistently obtain the highest utility, which validates its superiority.

2021 Randomized Algorithms for Submodular Function Maximization with a k-System Constraint
abstract
Submodular optimization has numerous applications such as crowdsourcing and viral marketing. In this paper, we study the problem of non-negative submodular function maximization subject to a $k$-system constraint, which generalizes many other important constraints in submodular optimization such as cardinality constraint, matroid constraint, and $k$-extendible system constraint. The existing approaches for this problem are all based on deterministic algorithmic frameworks, and the best approximation ratio achieved by these algorithms (for a general submodular function) is $k+2\sqrt{k+2}+3$. We propose a randomized algorithm with an improved approximation ratio of $(1+\sqrt{k})^2$, while achieving nearly-linear time complexity significantly lower than that of the state-of-the-art algorithm. We also show that our algorithm can be further generalized to address a stochastic case where the elements can be adaptively selected, and propose an approximation ratio of $(1+\sqrt{k+1})^2$ for the adaptive optimization case. The empirical performance of our algorithms is extensively evaluated in several applications related to data mining and social computing, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiorities of our algorithms in terms of both utility and efficiency.

2021 Efficient and Effective Algorithms for Revenue Maximization in Social Advertising
abstract
We consider the revenue maximization problem in social advertising, where a social network platform owner needs to select seed users for a group of advertisers, each with a payment budget, such that the total expected revenue that the owner gains from the advertisers by propagating their ads in the network is maximized. Previous studies on this problem show that it is intractable and present approximation algorithms. We revisit this problem from a fresh perspective and develop novel efficient approximation algorithms, both under the setting where an exact influence oracle is assumed and under one where this assumption is relaxed. Our approximation ratios significantly improve upon the previous ones. Furthermore, we empirically show, using extensive experiments on four datasets, that our algorithms considerably outperform the existing methods on both the solution quality and computation efficiency.

2020 Deterministic Approximation for Submodular Maximization over a Matroid in Nearly Linear Time
abstract
We study the problem of maximizing a non-monotone, non-negative submodular function subject to a matroid constraint. The prior best-known deterministic approximation ratio for this problem is $\frac{1}{4}-\epsilon$ under $\mathcal{O}(({n^4}/{\epsilon})\log n)$ time complexity. We show that this deterministic ratio can be improved to $\frac{1}{4}$ under $\mathcal{O}(nr)$ time complexity, and then present a more practical algorithm dubbed TwinGreedyFast which achieves $\frac{1}{4}-\epsilon$ deterministic ratio in nearly-linear running time of $\mathcal{O}(\frac{n}{\epsilon}\log\frac{r}{\epsilon})$. Our approach is based on a novel algorithmic framework of simultaneously constructing two candidate solution sets through greedy search, which enables us to get improved performance bounds by fully exploiting the properties of independence systems. As a byproduct of this framework, we also show that TwinGreedyFast achieves $\frac{1}{2p+2}-\epsilon$ deterministic ratio under a $p$-set system constraint with the same time complexity. To showcase the practicality of our approach, we empirically evaluated the performance of TwinGreedyFast on two network applications, and observed that it outperforms the state-of-the-art deterministic and randomized algorithms with efficient implementations for our problem.
