2023 Towards Robust and Smooth 3D Multi-Person Pose Estimation from Monocular Videos in the Wild
abstract
3D pose estimation is an invaluable task in computer vision with various practical applications. Especially, 3D pose estimation for multi-person from a monocular video (3DMPPE) is particularly challenging and is still largely uncharted, far from applying to in-the-wild scenarios yet. We pose three unresolved issues with the existing methods: lack of robustness on unseen views during training, vulnerability to occlusion, and severe jittering in the output. As a remedy, we propose POTR-3D, the first realization of a sequence-to-sequence 2D-to-3D lifting model for 3DMPPE, powered by a novel geometry-aware data augmentation strategy, capable of generating unbounded data with a variety of views while caring about the ground plane and occlusions. Through extensive experiments, we verify that the proposed model and data augmentation robustly generalizes to diverse unseen views, robustly recovers the poses against heavy occlusions, and reliably generates more natural and smoother outputs. The effectiveness of our approach is verified not only by achieving the state-of-the-art performance on public benchmarks, but also by qualitative results on more challenging in-the-wild videos. 2021 Critique of "Planetary Normal Mode Computation: Parallel Algorithms, Performance, and Reproducibility" by SCC Team From University of Washington
abstract
One of the tasks for the SC19 Student Cluster Competition is to reproduce the results in the reproducibility challenge article “Computing Planetary Interior Normal Modes with a Highly Parallel Polynomial Filtering Eigensolver”, by J. Shi et al., which describes a highly parallel algorithm for computing planetary normal modes. In running experiments from the article, we study the weak and strong scalability of the algorithm, as well as the relationship between model size, degree of polynomial filter, and execution time. We investigate these findings on a two-node, 64-core Intel Skylake-based Xeon cluster. Unfortunately, we are able to confirm some, but not all, of the original findings, with discrepancies possibly due to a low number of experimental runs due to competition time limits as well as nonuniform scaling of compute resources.

2013 A heterogeneous graph-based recommendation simulator
abstract
Heterogeneous graph-based recommendation frameworks have flexibility in that they can incorporate various recommendation algorithms and various kinds of information to produce better results. In this demonstration, we present a heterogeneous graph-based recommendation simulator which enables participants to experience the flexibility of a heterogeneous graph-based recommendation method. With our system, participants can simulate various recommendation semantics by expressing the semantics via meaningful paths like User → Movie → User → Movie. The simulator then returns the recommendation results on the fly based on the user-customized semantics using a fast Monte Carlo algorithm.

2012 PathRank: a novel node ranking measure on a heterogeneous graph for recommender systems
abstract
In this paper, we present a novel random-walk based node ranking measure, PathRank, which is defined on a heterogeneous graph by extending the Personalized PageRank algorithm. Not only can our proposed measure exploit the semantics behind the different types of nodes and edges in a heterogeneous graph, but also it can emulate various recommendation semantics such as collaborative filtering, content-based filtering, and their combinations. The experimental results show that PathRank can produce more various and effective recommendation results compared to existing approaches.

2001 Recovery of Motion Vectors by Detecting Homogeneous Movements for H.263 Video Communications
abstract
In this paper, a new approach for the recovery of lost or erroneous motion vector(MV)s by classifying the movements of neighboring blocks by their homogeneity is proposed. MVs of the neighboring blocks are classified according to the direction of MVs and a representative value for each class is determined to obtain the candidate MV with the minimum distortion is selected. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits better performance in many cases than existing methods.
