2024 SimpliGuard: Robust Mesh Simplification In the Wild
abstract
Polygonal meshes are widely used to represent complex geometries. However, the increasing complexity of models often leads to large meshes with millions of triangles, raising significant challenges for storage, transmission, and computation. Mesh simplification, a process of reducing the number of triangles in a mesh while preserving its overall shape and important features, has emerged as an indispensable technique to address these challenges. In this work, we focus on the problem of obtaining a visually consistent ultra-low-polygon mesh for complex meshes. Unlike previous methods, we design a robust simplification framework, SimpliGuard, to handle any meshes in the wild. Firstly, a reconstruction module is used to construct a low-polygon mesh with a similar shape but a manifold topology. Then, a texture initialization module is employed to quickly initialize the entire texture map. After that, a differentiable rendering module is utilized to optimize the overall structure and texture details, ensuring high-quality results. For meshes with skeletons, the correctness of motion can be preserved with our designed motion post-processing module. Experimental results demonstrate that SimpliGuard significantly outperforms previous methods and various featured software, including Blender and Simplygon.

2024 DRAN: Detailed Region-Adaptive Normalization for Conditional Image Synthesis
abstract
In recent years, conditional image synthesis has attracted growing attention due to its controllability in the image generation process. Although recent works have achieved realistic results, most of them have difficulty handling fine-grained styles with subtle details. To address this problem, a novel normalization module, named Detailed Region-Adaptive Normalization (DRAN), is proposed. It adaptively learns both fine-grained and coarse-grained style representations. Specifically, we first introduce a multi-level structure, Spatiality-aware Pyramid Pooling, to guide the model to learn coarse-to-fine features. Then, to adaptively fuse different levels of styles, we propose Dynamic Gating, making it possible to adaptively fuse different levels of styles according to different spatial regions. Finally, we collect a new makeup dataset (Makeup-Complex dataset) that contains a wide range of complex makeup styles with diverse poses and expressions. To evaluate the effectiveness and show the general use of our method, we conduct a set of experiments on makeup transfer and semantic image synthesis. Quantitative and qualitative experiments show that equipped with DRAN, simple baseline models are able to achieve promising improvements in complex style transfer and detailed texture synthesis.

2020 Data-Efficient Semi-Supervised Learning by Reliable Edge Mining
abstract
Learning powerful discriminative features is a challenging task in Semi-Supervised Learning, as the estimation of the feature space is more likely to be wrong with scarcer labeled data. Previous methods utilize a relation graph with edges representing 'similarity' or 'dissimilarity' between nodes. Similar nodes are forced to output consistent features, while dissimilar nodes are forced to be inconsistent. However, since unlabeled data may be wrongly labeled, the judgment of edges may be unreliable. Besides, the nodes connected by edges may already be well fitted, thus contributing little to the model training. We propose Reliable Edge Mining (REM), which forms a reliable graph by only selecting reliable and useful edges. Guided by the graph, the feature extractor is able to learn discriminative features in a data-efficient way, and consequently boosts the accuracy of the learned classifier. Visual analyses show that the features learned are more discriminative and better reveals the underlying structure of the data. REM can be combined with perturbation-based methods like Pi-model, TempEns and Mean Teacher to further improve accuracy. Experiments prove that our method is data-efficient on simple tasks like SVHN and CIFAR-10, and achieves state-of-the-art results on the challenging CIFAR-100.
