2024 Learning Crowd Behaviors in Navigation with Attention-based Spatial-Temporal Graphs
abstract
Safe and efficient navigation in dynamic environments shared with humans remains an open and challenging task for mobile robots. Previous works have shown the efficacy of using reinforcement learning frameworks to train policies for efficient navigation. However, their performance deteriorates when crowd configurations change, i.e. become larger or more complex. Thus, it is crucial to fully understand the complex, dynamic, and sophisticated interactions of the crowd resulting in proactive and foresighted behaviors for robot navigation. In this paper, a novel deep graph learning architecture based on attention mechanisms is proposed, which leverages the spatial-temporal graph to enhance robot navigation. We employ spatial graphs to capture the current spatial interactions, and through the integration with RNN, the temporal graphs utilize past trajectory information to infer the future intentions of each agent. The spatial-temporal graph reasoning ability allows the robot to better understand and interpret the relationships between agents over time and space, thereby making more informed decisions. Compared to previous state-of-the-art methods, our method demonstrates superior robustness in terms of safety, efficiency, and generalization in various challenging scenarios.

2022 Enhanced Spatial Attention Graph for Motion Planning in Crowded, Partially Observable Environments
abstract
Collision-free navigation while moving amongst static and dynamic obstacles with a limited sensor range is still a great challenge for modern mobile robots. Therefore, the ability to avoid collisions with obstacles in crowded, partially observable environments is one of the most important indicators to measure the navigation performance of a mobile robot. In this paper, we propose a novel deep reinforcement learning architecture that combines a spatial graph and attention rea-soning to tackle this problem. We take the relative positions and velocities of observed humans as nodes of the spatial graph and robot-human pairs as nodes of the attention graph to capture the spatial relations between the robot and the humans. In this way, our approach enhances the modeling of the relationship between the moving robot, static obstacles, and the people in the surrounding. As a result, our proposed navigation framework significantly outperforms state-of-the-art approaches [1], [2] in crowded scenarios when the robot has only a limited sensor range in terms of a reduced collision rate. Furthermore, we realize a seriously decreased training time by applying parallel Double Deep Q-Learning.

2021 Spatial-Temporal Consistency Network for Low-Latency Trajectory Forecasting
abstract
Trajectory forecasting is a crucial step for autonomous vehicles and mobile robots in order to navigate and interact safely. In order to handle the spatial interactions between objects, graph-based approaches have been proposed. These methods, however, model motion on a frame-to-frame basis and do not provide a strong temporal model. To overcome this limitation, we propose a compact model called Spatial-Temporal Consistency Network (STC-Net). In STC-Net, dilated temporal convolutions are introduced to model long-range dependencies along each trajectory for better temporal modeling while graph convolutions are employed to model the spatial interaction among different trajectories. Furthermore, we propose a feature-wise convolution to generate the predicted trajectories in one pass and refine the forecast trajectories together with the reconstructed observed trajectories. We demonstrate that STC-Net generates spatially and temporally consistent trajectories and outperforms other graph-based methods. Since STC-Net requires only 0.7k parameters and forecasts the future with a latency of only 1.3ms, it advances the state-of-the-art and satisfies the requirements for realistic applications.
