| 2025 | Heart Attack Risk Prediction Using Spiking Neural Networks with Poisson-Based Temporal EncodingabstractDiseases of the heart and blood vessels are one of the most common causes of death worldwide, and early detection is crucial to prevent fatalities. Classical machine learning models tend to be inefficient as they are based on dense numerical computations and ignore the temporal features present in biological signals. This paper introduces a new application of Spiking Neural Network SNNs, a bio-inspiration model of deep learning, to predict heart attack risk on clinical data. The data (from Kaggle) includes patients' cholesterol levels, ECG results, and oxygen saturation. We modeled biologically plausible spike trains with Poisson-based temporal encoding, and trained the network's weights with Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) neurons. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) was applied to fine-tune the architecture parameters. The approach obtained an accuracy of 84.6% and an F1 of 86%, and the AUC was 0.89. This indicates that SNNs can be considered alternatives to classical models that provide effective and interpretable solutions for clinical DSSs. Amina Al-Marzouqi, Syed Azizur Rahman, Said A. | 2024 | Assist-Bot: A Voice-Enabled Assistant for SeniorsabstractWith the increasing elderly population, healthcare systems are facing a crisis in providing 24/7 assistance to seniors. Voice-enabled robots can serve as assistants and companions for seniors. Many voice and chat systems, such as Alexa, Siri, and Google, have emerged and become the top consumer brands. However, a significant gap still exists in making these systems mimic human-like conversation. Most of these systems lack empathy and cannot understand users' expressions and intent in delivering information as expected by users. Studies have shown that seniors struggle to effectively communicate with the existing voice conversation systems, leading to a stigma around technology acceptance. In this pilot project, we explore existing literature to identify the key challenges and the types of care that seniors need, and present a personalized voice communication system that can remind about tasks such as taking medication and doing health checks; answer predefined questions about personalized routines and medications; launch specific applications such as the contactless wellness monitoring application “Veyetals”, “Uber” or a music plugin, and answer basic questions from a pre-defined Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) database. We extend existing voice bots to develop the Assist-Bot to serve as a voice-enabled assistant for nontechnical seniors. Caregivers can configure medication and check-up schedules, and contact numbers for different needs. | 2024 | Revolutionizing Healthcare Management: Architecture of a Web-based Medical Triage ServiceabstractDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional emergency healthcare systems faced unprecedented strain due to the sharp rise in demands for urgent care, scarcity of resources, and increased risks of people getting infected while waiting at the emergency care facility. We present Triage-Bot, an online medical triage provisioning service, that can revolutionize emergency care by decreasing the load on emergency departments (ED), reducing healthcare expenses, and improving the quality of care. Empowered by artificial intelligence and natural language processing, the Triage-Bot service assesses and prioritizes patients' needs based on symptoms, medical history, and perceived conditions from multimodal video, audio, and text data captured during patients' interactions. The captured summarized information with a severity ranking is sent to a human expert to suggest the next action on the user's part. The diverse data types used by the Triage-Bot in communication, authentication, data collection, storage, and analytics requires a robust and scalable system architecture for online service provisioning. In this paper, we specifically focus on the system design and architecture of the Triage-Bot for emergency healthcare settings. With integrated electronic medical records (EMR) and online platforms, the bot fosters collaboration among healthcare professionals and enables swift and informed decision-making even in the face of crises. By partially automating and offering a hybrid triage process, the Triage-Bot improves resource allocation, reduces healthcare management costs for emergency care, minimizes patient waiting times, and improves wellbeing. To address the complexities and demands of healthcare data management, our proposed system incorporates MongoDB database for flexibility, scalability, and versatility in supporting different types of data. Additionally, we implement a data linking and analytics pipeline utilizing a data Lakehouse system to effectively ingest, manage, process, and generate knowledge from heterogeneous data sources. | 2023 | Positive Perception of Self-Medication Practice and Cyberchondria Behavior Among Adults in BangladeshabstractCyberchondria is a distinct behavioral syndrome that is closely related to health anxiety/hypochondria and excessive online searching for health information and/or digital self-tracking. Despite the reported prevalence of self-medication, cyberchondria research is still in its infancy in Bangladesh. We investigated the relationship between Cyberchondria and self-medication among adults. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 480 individuals who had internet access and who can read both Bangla and English. The Cyberchondria Severity Scale and the self-medication perception Questionnaire were applied to the participants. Univariate and hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Of the study group 283 (59%) were male, and 197 (41%), were female. Their ages ranged from 18 to 40 years, with an average of 25.1 (± 5.97) years. The positive perception of self-medication was prevalent in 279 (58.1%) adults. Cyberchondria and perception of self-medication were positively related and in the final model self-medication, age and residence were found to be the significant determinants of cyberchondria. Positive perception of self-medication practice may be a potential risk factor for Cyberchondria. | 2022 | Technology as a Distracter for Providing Humanistic Care in Technology Dependent Care UnitsabstractMedical technology advances quickly, and new machines are introduced into the industry on a regular basis. The impact of technology on healthcare providers' attitudes toward family members in critical care settings is investigated in this paper. Given the modern technology environment of critical care, multiple studies have indicated that many healthcare personnel place a greater emphasis on technology than on contact with patients or family members. Because of this emphasis on technology, critical care specialists may overlook other parts of care, such as family-centered care. This could also explain why critical care workers are averse to allowing family members to participate in operations like CPR. | 2022 | Relationship between Internet Addiction and Stress Levels among Adolescents in East Jakarta, Jakarta Province, IndonesiaabstractIntroduction: Many adolescents have ready access to the Internet. The Internet allows most needs related to communications, banking, education, and various other fields to be achieved regardless of time and location. Although this makes daily life easier, it can also cause issues such as Internet addiction, which is a serious public health problem. Stress is associated with difficulty interacting with others in healthy, positive, and meaningful ways, and has also been associated with Internet addiction. Aims: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between Internet addiction and stress in adolescents aged 12–15 years (grades 8 and 9) from four junior high schools in East Jakarta, DKI Jakarta Province, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design and included 315 adolescents (boys: n=149, 47.3%; girls: n=166, 52.7%). Participants completed the Internet Addiction Test and the Perceived Stress Scale. Results: Although most adolescents had moderate stress levels, 23 (7.3%) adolescents had low stress and 18 (5.7%) had high stress. Most (n=281, 89.2%) adolescents had mild Internet addiction and 34 (10.8%) had moderate Internet addiction. We found a weak positive and statistically significant correlation between Internet addiction and stress (Spearman's correlation coefficient 0.345, p=0.000). Overall, 15 (5.3%) adolescents with mild Internet addiction experienced high stress, and three (8.8%) adolescents with moderate Internet addiction experienced high stress. Conclusion: Our findings suggest there is a weak positive relationship between Internet addiction and stress. Increased parental supervision of adolescents' Internet use may be needed use to prevent the risk of Internet addiction. Further research using longitudinal, or case-control designs is needed to clarify the causal relationship between Internet addiction and stress among adolescents. | 2021 | Integration of mHealth into Primary Health Care for Child Cancer Patients - An approach to reduce health inequities in BangladeshabstractGlobally, an estimated 160,000 children develop cancer each year, 80% of whom live in developing countries like Bangladesh. Without proper diagnosis, treatment, or care, children with cancer in Bangladesh die prematurely. Out of an estimated 9000 cases per year, less than 5.5% of children receive hospital treatment, which is concentrated at cancer referral centers in the capital or large cities. This creates a major disparity in access to services between rural and urban areas. There are no diagnosis and treatment facilities available at the primary health care (grass roots) level in rural areas where most of the population live. Over 160 million people in Bangladesh use mobile phones. This study proposes a Mobile-based Childhood Cancer Care System to establish a mechanism to connect patients and link primary health care and tertiary care facilities. This study aims to assess the impact of using modern technology (mHealth) to bridge this access gap and improve the services provided for children with cancer. This study also aims to determine the effectiveness of integration of mHealth into primary health care for management of childhood cancer in Bangladesh. Ultimately, the web and mobile phone-based system will allow creation of a childhood cancer patient registry in Bangladesh. | 2021 | Social Media Use and Physical Activity among Junior High School Students in IndonesiaabstractSocial media users regularly log in via online platforms to communicate and interact with other network users. There are many different social media sites that are popular among teenagers, including Facebook and Twitter, and these platforms offer alternatives to email for communication. Purpose: This study examined the relationship between social media use and physical activity among junior high school-aged adolescents. Methods: This study was a further analysis using data from a previous study that explored the use of online electronic media and physical health, mental health, and school performance among -junior high school students in East Jakarta, Indonesia. That cross sectional study included 315 adolescents from junior high school. Data were collected with the Social Media Use Scale and the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents. Results: This analysis showed that students fell into four social networking use groups: low use (n=78, 24.8%), average use (n=143, 45.4%), high use (n=81, 25.7%), and very high use (n=13, 4.1%). In terms of physical activity, 54 students (17.1%) had low activity, 181 (57.5%) had moderate activity, and 80 (25.4%) had high activity. The relationship between social media use and physical activity had a low correlation (r=0.005), indicating a weak, non-significant (p=0.928) relationship. Conclusion: This study found no significant relationship between social media use and physical activity among adolescents at junior high school in Indonesia. | 2021 | Relationship between Internet Gaming Addiction and Body Mass Index Status among Indonesian Junior High School StudentsabstractWe live in a media-saturated world and rely on a variety of new media for information, entertainment, and connectivity. The Internet, online gaming, and other electronic media have become increasingly popular among teenagers. Purpose: This study examined the relationship between Internet gaming addiction (IGA) and body mass index (BMI) status among junior high school students. Methods: This was a secondary data analysis of a previous study that explored electronic media use and physical health, mental health, and school performance among adolescents at junior high schools in East Jakarta. That study included a sample of 315 adolescents. The present analysis included data for 250 students. We examined IGA using the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form and calculated BMI using body weight (kg) divided by height (in meters squared). Results: This analysis showed that 177 students (70.8%) had low levels of IGA and 126 students (50.4%) had a normal BMI. Students with high levels of IGA tended to be overweight. However, the relationship between IGA and BMI was weak and inverse (r = −0.036, p = 0.566). Conclusion: We found a weak inverse relationship between IGA and BMI. Further research is needed to better understand the link between IGA and BMI. It is also important to conduct a longitudinal study to clarify any causal relationship between IGA and BMI. | 2020 | Mobile Technology to Improve Physical Activity Among School-Aged Children in the United Arab EmiratesabstractWorld Health Organization reports indicate childhood obesity has reached an epidemic state worldwide. In the United Arab Emirates, 45% of school-aged children are either overweight or obese. Interventional studies to tackle this issue are urgently needed. Researchers have described the childhood and adolescence developmental stages as periods in which habits and skills that persist into adulthood are developed; therefore, this period may be considered a critical time for establishing healthy lifestyles and positive adaptive behaviors (e.g., nutritional behaviors). Currently, most available health, fitness, or lifestyle-related mobile applications are directed to the general population and not tailored to the developing children and adolescent population. | 2020 | EmCARE Applications in Managing the Emotional Skills of Children and Adolescents in the United Arab EmiratesabstractAnxiety disorders are common among children and adolescents because of the nature of their developmental stage, which requires significant skill development and adaptation to many life transitions. A recent cross-sectional study conducted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with children aged 10-19 years (N=968) reported the overall prevalence was anxiety disorders of 28%. Of the whole sample, 37.1% had panic disorder, 45.5% had separation anxiety, 20% had social anxiety, and 36.5% had school avoidance. This highlights that age-appropriate initiatives are urgently needed to reduce the high rate of anxiety-related disorders. In the UAE, there are additional risk factors for the development of mental health problems, particularly among young people (i.e., consanguineous marriages, large families, and a large youth population in the active phase of development). This further reinforces the need to actively initiate intervention to address these issues among the youth population before they become entrenched in their adult personalities. According to World Health Organization reports, almost half of mental health conditions develop before age 14 years. The UAE healthcare system has identified a clear need to further develop existing mental health services. | 2020 | Mobile for Health: A Digital Intervention to Reduce Smoking in the United Arab EmiratesabstractSmoking is a global problem. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), about 34% of men are smokers, and there are around 3000 smoking-related deaths each year. Smoking is also an increasing problem in the UAE, with smoking/smoking-related products responsible for many fatal diseases, including lung cancer, myocardial infarction, diabetes, and high blood pressure. In addition to these diseases, smoking is a major contributor to air pollution. Many countries offer smoking cessation programs to promote population health, but these programs are often time consuming and costly. In this paper, we proposed a novel method based on a mHealth application that uses customized and automated SMS messages to support smokers to quit smoking. A hybrid motivational theory will be used to motivate participants who are willing to enroll in our program for a 1-year period. During this time, all program users will be monitored and motivated by the mHealth application. The main objective of this project was to develop a framework for use by 200 UAE participants. It is intended that our program will motivate and encourage participants, and build their confidence to quit smoking.
