| 2023 | Learning Preference Model for LLMs via Automatic Preference Data GenerationabstractDespite the advanced capacities of the stateof-the-art large language models (LLMs), they suffer from issues of hallucination, stereotype, etc. Preference models play an important role in LLM alignment, yet training preference models predominantly rely on human-annotated data. This reliance limits their versatility and scalability. In this paper, we propose learning the preference model for LLMs via automatic preference data generation (AutoPM).Our approach involves both In-Breadth Data Generation, which elicits pairwise preference data from LLMs following the helpful-honestharmless (HHH) criteria, and In-Depth Data Generation, which enriches the dataset with responses spanning a wide quality range. With HHH-guided preference data, our approach simultaneously enables the LLMs to learn human preferences and align with human values.Quantitative assessments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate the reliability and potential of AutoPM, pointing out a more general and scalable way to improve LLM performance. | 2022 | Eliciting Knowledge from Large Pre-Trained Models for Unsupervised Knowledge-Grounded ConversationabstractRecent advances in large-scale pre-training provide large models with the potential to learn knowledge from the raw text.It is thus natural to ask whether it is possible to leverage these large models as knowledge bases for downstream tasks. In this work, we answer the aforementioned question in unsupervised knowledge-grounded conversation. We explore various methods that best elicit knowledge from large models. Our human study indicates that, though hallucinations exist, large models post the unique advantage of being able to output common sense and summarize facts that cannot be directly retrieved from the search engine. To better exploit such generated knowledge in dialogue generation, we treat the generated knowledge as a noisy knowledge source and propose the posterior-based reweighing as well as the noisy training strategy.Empirical results on two benchmarks show advantages over the state-of-the-art methods. | 2022 | FlowEval: A Consensus-Based Dialogue Evaluation Framework Using Segment Act FlowsabstractDespite recent progress in open-domain dialogue evaluation, how to develop automatic metrics remains an open problem. We explore the potential of dialogue evaluation featuring dialog act information, which was hardly explicitly modeled in previous methods. However, defined at the utterance level in general, dialog act is of coarse granularity, as an utterance can contain multiple segments possessing different functions.Hence, we propose segment act, an extension of dialog act from utterance level to segment level, and crowdsource a largescale dataset for it.To utilize segment act flows, sequences of segment acts, for evaluation, we develop the first consensus-based dialogue evaluation framework, FlowEval. This framework provides a reference-free approach for dialog evaluation by finding pseudo-references.Extensive experiments against strong baselines on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and other desirable characteristics of our FlowEval, pointing out a potential path for better dialogue evaluation. | 2021 | NaturalConv: A Chinese Dialogue Dataset Towards Multi-turn Topic-driven ConversationabstractIn this paper, we propose a Chinese multi-turn topic-driven conversation dataset, NaturalConv, which allows the participants to chat anything they want as long as any element from the topic is mentioned and the topic shift is smooth. Our corpus contains 19.9K conversations from six domains, and 400K utterances with an average turn number of 20.1. These conversations contain in-depth discussions on related topics or widely natural transition between multiple topics. We believe either way is normal for human conversation. To facilitate the research on this corpus, we provide results of several benchmark models. Comparative results show that for this dataset, our current models are not able to provide significant improvement by introducing background knowledge/topic. Therefore, the proposed dataset should be a good benchmark for further research to evaluate the validity and naturalness of multi-turn conversation systems. | 2020 | Multi-Scale Generalized Attention-Based Regional Maximum Activation of Convolutions for Beauty Product RetrievalabstractThe application of beauty and personal-care product retrieval seems to be evident in our daily life, and it has attracted increasing research interests during the last decade. However, the retrieval task is suffered from different image variations and complicated backgrounds. Recent works have demonstrated that Generalized-attention Regional Maximal Activation of Convolutions (GRMAC) descriptor can provide state-of-the-art performance for the retrieval task. However, GRMAC descriptor is restrained from the essentially limited property of the employed feature from a single layer. Features from a single layer are not robust enough for scale variations, shape deformation, and heavy occlusion. In this paper, we propose a novel descriptors, named Multi-Scale Generalized Attention-Based Regional Maximum Activation of Convolutions (MS-GRMAC). This method introduces multi-scale generalized attention mechanism to reduce the influence of scale variations, thus, can boost the performance of the retrieval task. To empirically investigate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct extensive experiments on the dataset containing more than half-million personal-care products (Perfect-500K) and obtain satisfactory results without ensemble. | 2020 | Multimodal Deep Learning for Social Media Popularity Prediction With Attention MechanismabstractSocial media popularity estimation refers to predict the post's popularity using multimodal contents. The prediction performance heavily relies on the feature extraction part and fully leveraging multimodal heterogeneous data is of a great challenge in the practical settings. Despite remarkable progress have been made, most of the previous attempts are restrained from the essentially limited property of the employed single modality. Inspired by the recent success of multimodal learning, we propose a novel multimodal deep learning framework for the popularity prediction task, which aims to leverage the complementary knowledge from different modalities. Moreover, an attention mechanism is introduced in our framework, with the goal to assign large weights to specified modalities during the training and inference phases. To empirically investigate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach, we conduct extensive experiments on the 2020 SMP challenge. The obtained results show that the proposed framework outperforms related approaches. Kele Xu, Zhimin Lin, Jianqiao Zhao, Peichang Shi, Wei Deng 0003, Huaimin Wang 0001 |
