2026 A2GBD: Attack-Agnostic Graph Backdoor Defense
abstract
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are vulnerable to graph backdoor attacks, which poses severe risks to their deployment in safety-critical applications. Existing defenses predominantly focus on specific backdoor triggers, making them brittle and unable to generalize across different backdoor triggers with varying properties. Motivated by this limitation, this work proposes an attack-agnostic graph backdoor defense mechanism A2GBD, which does not require prior knowledge of the specific attack strategies (e.g., edge perturbation, node attribute manipulation) to achieve effective defense. A2GBD consists of suspicious node selection and defense strategy generation. The selection module selects high-suspicion nodes to enhance defense awareness, while the defense agent adaptively determines and executes defense strategies. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate that A2GBD consistently lowers attack success rates while maintaining high clean accuracy, showing strong robustness and generalizability against diverse graph backdoor attack strategies.

2025 Efficient Transfer Learning for Video-language Foundation Models
abstract
Pre-trained vision-language models provide a robust foundation for efficient transfer learning across various downstream tasks. In the field of video action recognition, mainstream approaches often introduce additional modules to capture temporal information. Although the additional modules increase the capacity of model, enabling it to better capture video-specific inductive biases, existing methods typically introduce a substantial number of new parameters and are prone to catastrophic forgetting of previously acquired generalizable knowledge. In this paper, we propose a parameter-efficient Multi-modal Spatio-Temporal Adapter (MSTA) to enhance the alignment between textual and visual representations, achieving a balance between generalizable knowledge and task-specific adaptation. Furthermore, to mitigate over-fitting and enhance generalizability, we introduce a spatio-temporal description-guided consistency constraint. This constraint involves providing template inputs (e.g., "a video of {cls}") to the trainable language branch and LLM-generated spatio-temporal descriptions to the pre-trained language branch, enforcing output consistency between the branches. This approach reduces overfitting to downstream tasks and enhances the distinguishability of the trainable branch within the spatio-temporal semantic space. We evaluate the effectiveness of our approach across four tasks: zero-shot transfer, few-shot learning, base-to-novel generalization, and fully-supervised learning. Compared to many state-of-the-art methods, our MSTA achieves outstanding performance across all evaluations, while using only 2-7% of the trainable parameters in the original model.

2025 Conditional Prototype Rectification Prompt Learning
abstract
Pre-trained large-scale vision-language models (VLMs) have acquired profound understanding of general visual concepts. Recent advancements in efficient transfer learning (ETL) have shown remarkable success in fine-tuning VLMs within the scenario of limited data, introducing only a few parameters to harness task-specific insights from VLMs. Despite significant progress, current leading ETL methods tend to overfit the narrow distributions of base classes seen during training and encounter two primary challenges: (i) only utilizing uni-modal information to modeling task-specific knowledge; and (ii) using costly and time-consuming methods to supplement knowledge. To address these issues, we propose a Conditional Prototype Rectification Prompt Learning (CPR) method to correct the bias of the base examples and augment limited data in an effective way. Specifically, we alleviate over-fitting on base classes from two aspects. First, each input image acquires knowledge from both textual and visual prototypes and then generates sample-conditional text tokens. Second, we extract utilizable knowledge from unlabeled data to further refine the prototypes. These two strategies mitigate biases that stem from base classes, yielding a more effective classifier. Extensive experiments on 11 benchmark datasets show that our CPR achieves state-of-the-art performance on few-shot classification, base-to-new generalization, and cross-dataset generalization tasks. Our code is available at https://github.com/chenhaoxing/CPR.

2024 Adversarial Robust Safeguard for Evading Deep Facial Manipulation
abstract
The non-consensual exploitation of facial manipulation has emerged as a pressing societal concern. In tandem with the identification of such fake content, recent research endeavors have advocated countering manipulation techniques through proactive interventions, specifically the incorporation of adversarial noise to impede the manipulation in advance. Nevertheless, with insufficient consideration of robustness, we show that current methods falter in providing protection after simple perturbations, e.g., blur. In addition, traditional optimization-based methods face limitations in scalability as they struggle to accommodate the substantial expansion of data volume, a consequence of the time-intensive iterative pipeline. To solve these challenges, we propose a learning-based model, Adversarial Robust Safeguard (ARS), to generate desirable protection noise in a single forward process, concurrently exhibiting a heightened resistance against prevalent perturbations. Specifically, our method involves a two-way protection design, characterized by a basic protection component responsible for generating efficacious noise features, coupled with robust protection for further enhancement. In robust protection, we first fuse image features with spatially duplicated noise embedding, thereby accounting for inherent information redundancy. Subsequently, a combination comprising a differentiable perturbation module and an adversarial network is devised to simulate potential information degradation during the training process. To evaluate it, we conduct experiments on four manipulation methods and compare recent works comprehensively. The results of our method exhibit good visual effects with pronounced robustness against varied perturbations at different levels.

2024 Improving the Adversarial Transferability of Vision Transformers with Virtual Dense Connection
abstract
With the great achievement of vision transformers (ViTs), transformer-based approaches have become the new paradigm for solving various computer vision tasks. However, recent research shows that similar to convolutional neural networks (CNNs), ViTs are still vulnerable to adversarial attacks. To explore the shared deficiency of models with different structures, researchers begin to analyze the cross-structure adversarial transferability, which is still under-explored. Therefore, in this work, we focus on the ViT attacks to improve the cross-structure transferability between the transformer-based and convolution-based models. Previous studies fail to thoroughly investigate the influence of the components inside the ViT models on adversarial transferability, leading to inferior performance. To overcome the drawback, we launch a motivating study by linearly down-scaling the gradients of components inside the ViT models to analyze their influence on adversarial transferability. Based on the motivating study, we find that the gradient of the skip connection most influences transferability and believe that back-propagating gradients from deeper blocks can enhance transferability. Therefore, we propose the Virtual Dense Connection method (VDC). Specifically, without changing the forward pass, we first recompose the original network to add virtual dense connections. Then we back-propagate gradients of deeper Attention maps and Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) blocks via virtual dense connections when generating adversarial samples. Extensive experiments confirm the superiority of our proposed method over the state-of-the-art baselines, with an 8.2% improvement in transferability between ViT models and a 7.2% improvement in cross-structure transferability from ViTs to CNNs.

2024 Segment Anything Model Meets Image Harmonization
abstract
Image harmonization is a crucial technique in image composition that aims to seamlessly match the background by adjusting the foreground of composite images. Current methods adopt either global-level or pixel-level feature matching. Global-level feature matching ignores the proximity prior, treating foreground and background as separate entities. On the other hand, pixel-level feature matching loses contextual information. Therefore, it is necessary to use the information from semantic maps that describe different objects to guide harmonization. In this paper, we propose Semantic-guided Region-aware Instance Normalization (SRIN) that can utilize the semantic segmentation maps output by a pre-trained Segment Anything Model (SAM) to guide the visual consistency learning of foreground and background features. Abundant experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method for image harmonization over state-of-the-art methods.

2024 Diffusioninst: Diffusion Model for Instance Segmentation
abstract
Diffusion frameworks have achieved comparable performance with previous state-of-the-art image generation models. This paper proposes DiffusionInst, a novel framework representing instances as vectors and formulates instance segmentation as a noise-to-vector denoising process. The model is trained to reverse the noisy groundtruth mask without any inductive bias from RPN. It takes a randomly generated vector as input and outputs mask with multi-step denoising during inference. Extensive experimental results on COCO and LVIS show that DiffusionInst achieves competitive performance. Our code is available at https://github.com/chenhaoxing/DiffusionInst.

2023 Mobile User Interface Element Detection Via Adaptively Prompt Tuning
abstract
Recent object detection approaches rely on pretrained vision-language models for image-text alignment. However, they fail to detect the Mobile User Interface (MUI) element since it contains additional OCR information, which describes its content and function but is often ignored. In this paper, we develop a new MUI element detection dataset named MUI-zh and propose an Adaptively Prompt Tuning (APT) module to take advantage of discriminating OCR information. APT is a lightweight and effective module to jointly optimize category prompts across different modalities. For every element, APT uniformly encodes its visual features and OCR descriptions to dynamically adjust the representation of frozen category prompts. We evaluate the effectiveness of our plug-and-play APT upon several existing CLIP-based detectors for both standard and open-vocabulary MUI element detection. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves considerable improvements on two datasets. The datasets is available at github.com/antmachineintelligence/MUI-zh.

2023 Backpropagation Path Search On Adversarial Transferability
abstract
Deep neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial examples, dictating the imperativeness to test the model’s robustness before deployment. Transfer-based attackers craft adversarial examples against surrogate models and transfer them to victim models deployed in the black-box situation. To enhance the adversarial transferability, structure-based attackers adjust the backpropagation path to avoid the attack from overfitting the surrogate model. However, existing structure-based attackers fail to explore the convolution module in CNNs and modify the backpropagation graph heuristically, leading to limited effectiveness. In this paper, we propose backPropagation pAth Search (PAS), solving the aforementioned two problems. We first propose SkipConv to adjust the backpropagation path of convolution by structural reparameterization. To overcome the drawback of heuristically designed backpropagation paths, we further construct a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) search space, utilize one-step approximation for path evaluation and employ Bayesian Optimization to search for the optimal path. We conduct comprehensive experiments in a wide range of transfer settings, showing that PAS improves the attack success rate by a huge margin for both normally trained and defense models.

2023 AutoAC: Towards Automated Attribute Completion for Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network
abstract
Many real-world data can be modeled as heterogeneous graphs that contain multiple types of nodes and edges. Meanwhile, due to excellent performance, heterogeneous graph neural networks (GNNs) have received more and more attention. However, the existing work mainly focuses on the design of novel GNN models, while ignoring another important issue that also has a large impact on the model performance, namely the missing attributes of some node types. The handcrafted attribute completion requires huge expert experience and domain knowledge. Also, considering the differences in semantic characteristics between nodes, the attribute completion should be fine-grained, i.e., the attribute completion operation should be node-specific. Moreover, to improve the performance of the downstream graph learning task, attribute completion and the training of the heterogeneous GNN should be jointly optimized rather than viewed as two separate processes. To address the above challenges, we propose a differentiable attribute completion framework called AutoAC for automated completion operation search in heterogeneous GNNs. We first propose an expressive completion operation search space, including topology-dependent and topology-independent completion operations. Then, we propose a continuous relaxation schema and further propose a differentiable completion algorithm where the completion operation search is formulated as a bi-level joint optimization problem. To improve the search efficiency, we leverage two optimization techniques: discrete constraints and auxiliary unsupervised graph node clustering. Extensive experimental results on real-world datasets reveal that AutoAC outperforms the SOTA handcrafted heterogeneous GNNs and the existing attribute completion method.

2023 DiffUTE: Universal Text Editing Diffusion Model
abstract
Diffusion model based language-guided image editing has achieved great success recently. However, existing state-of-the-art diffusion models struggle with rendering correct text and text style during generation. To tackle this problem, we propose a universal self-supervised text editing diffusion model (DiffUTE), which aims to replace or modify words in the source image with another one while maintaining its realistic appearance. Specifically, we build our model on a diffusion model and carefully modify the network structure to enable the model for drawing multilingual characters with the help of glyph and position information. Moreover, we design a self-supervised learning framework to leverage large amounts of web data to improve the representation ability of the model. Experimental results show that our method achieves an impressive performance and enables controllable editing on in-the-wild images with high fidelity. Our code will be avaliable in \url{https://github.com/chenhaoxing/DiffUTE}.

2022 PSP: Progressive Space Pruning for Efficient Graph Neural Architecture Search
abstract
Recently, graph neural network (GNN) has achieved great success in many graph learning tasks such as node classifi-cation and graph classification. However, there is no single GNN architecture that can fit different graph datasets. Designing an effective GNN for a specific graph dataset requires considerable expert experience and huge computational costs. Inspired by the success of neural architecture search (NAS), searching the GNN architectures automatically has attracted more and more attention. Motivated by the fact that the search space plays a critical role in the NAS, we propose a novel and effective graph neural architecture search method called PSP from the perspective of search space design in this paper. We first propose an expressive search space composed of multiple cells. Instead of searching the entire architecture, we focus on searching the architecture of the cell. Then, we propose a progressive space pruning-based algorithm to search the architectures efficiently. Moreover, the data-specific search spaces and architectures ob-tained by PSP can be transferred to new graph datasets based on meta-learning. Extensive experimental results on different types of graph datasets reveal that PSP outperforms the state-of-the-art handcrafted architectures and the existing NAS methods in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

2022 A2: Efficient Automated Attacker for Boosting Adversarial Training
abstract
Based on the significant improvement of model robustness by AT (Adversarial Training), various variants have been proposed to further boost the performance. Well-recognized methods have focused on different components of AT (e.g., designing loss functions and leveraging additional unlabeled data). It is generally accepted that stronger perturbations yield more robust models. However, how to generate stronger perturbations efficiently is still missed. In this paper, we propose an efficient automated attacker called A2 to boost AT by generating the optimal perturbations on-the-fly during training. A2 is a parameterized automated attacker to search in the attacker space for the best attacker against the defense model and examples. Extensive experiments across different datasets demonstrate that A2 generates stronger perturbations with low extra cost and reliably improves the robustness of various AT methods against different attacks.

2022 One-Stage Tree: end-to-end tree builder and pruner
abstract
Abstract Decision trees have favorable properties, including interpretability, high computational efficiency, and the ability to learn from little training data. Learning a decision tree is known to be NP-complete. The researchers have proposed many greedy algorithms such as CART to learn approximate solutions. Inspired by the current popular neural networks, soft trees that support end-to-end training with back-propagation have attracted more and more attention. However, existing soft trees either lose the interpretability due to the continuous relaxation or employ the two-stage method of end-to-end building and then pruning. In this paper, we propose One-Stage Tree to build and prune the decision tree jointly through a bilevel optimization problem. Moreover, we leverage the reparameterization trick and proximal iterations to keep the tree discrete during end-to-end training. As a result, One-Stage Tree reduces the performance gap between training and testing and maintains the advantage of interpretability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed One-Stage Tree outperforms CART and the existing soft trees on classification and regression tasks.
