| 2024 | Integer or Floating Point? New Outlooks for Low-Bit Quantization on Large Language ModelsabstractEfficient deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) requires low-bit quantization to reduce model size and inference cost. Besides low-bit integer formats (e.g., INT8/INT4) used in previous quantization works, emerging low-bit floating-point formats (e.g., FP8/FP4) supported by advanced hardware like NVIDIA’s H100 GPU offer an alternative. Our study finds that introducing floating-point formats significantly improves LLMs quantization. We also discover that the optimal quantization format varies across layers. Therefore, we select the optimal format for each layer, which we call the Mixture of Formats Quantization (MoFQ) method. Our MoFQ method achieves better or comparable results over current methods in weight-only (W-only) and weight-activation (WA) post-training quantization scenarios across various tasks, with no additional hardware overhead. | 2023 | Cloud-Device Collaborative Adaptation to Continual Changing Environments in the Real-WorldabstractWhen facing changing environments in the real world, the lightweight model on client devices suffers from severe performance drops under distribution shifts. The main limitations of the existing device model lie in (1) unable to update due to the computation limit of the device, (2) the limited generalization ability of the lightweight model. Meanwhile, recent large models have shown strong generalization capability on the cloud while they can not be deployed on client devices due to poor computation constraints. To enable the device model to deal with changing environments, we propose a new learning paradigm of Cloud-Device Collaborative Continual Adaptation, which encourages collaboration between cloud and device and improves the generalization of the device model. Based on this paradigm, we further propose an Uncertainty-based Visual Prompt Adapted (U-VPA) teacher-student model to transfer the generalization capability of the large model on the cloud to the device model. Specifically, we first design the Uncertainty Guided Sampling (UGS) to screen out challenging data continuously and transmit the most out-of-distribution samples from the device to the cloud. Then we propose a Visual Prompt Learning Strategy with Uncertainty guided updating (VPLU) to specifically deal with the selected samples with more distribution shifts. We transmit the visual prompts to the device and concatenate them with the incoming data to pull the device testing distribution closer to the cloud training distribution. We conduct extensive experiments on two object detection datasets with continually changing environments. Our proposed U-VPA teacher-student framework outperforms previous state-of-the-art test time adaptation and device-cloud collaboration methods. The code and datasets will be released. | 2023 | PAR$^{2}$2Net: End-to-End Panoramic Image Reflection RemovalabstractIn this article, we investigate the problem of panoramic image reflection removal to relieve the content ambiguity between the reflection layer and the transmission scene. Although a partial view of the reflection scene is attainable in the panoramic image and provides additional information for reflection removal, it is not trivial to directly apply this for getting rid of undesired reflections due to its misalignment with the reflection-contaminated image. We propose an end-to-end framework to tackle this problem. By resolving misalignment issues with adaptive modules, the high-fidelity recovery of reflection layer and transmission scenes is accomplished. We further propose a new data generation approach that considers the physics-based formation model of mixture images and the in-camera dynamic range clipping to diminish the domain gap between synthetic and real data. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its applicability for mobile devices and industrial applications. | 2023 | Shape From Polarization With Distant Lighting EstimationabstractThis article presents a new approach for surface normal recovery from polarization images under an unknown distant light. Polarization provides rich cues of object geometry and material, but it is also influenced by different lighting conditions. Different from previous Shape-from-Polarization (SfP) methods, which rely on handcrafted or data-driven priors, we analytically investigate the benefits of estimating distant lighting for resolving the ambiguity in normal estimation from SfP using the polarimetric Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (pBRDF) based image formation model. We then propose a two-stage learning framework that first effectively exploits polarization and shading cues to estimate the reflectance and lighting information and then optimizes the initial normal as the geometric prior. Leveraging the normal prior with the polarization cues from the input images, our network further generates the surface normal with more details in the second stage. We also present a data generation pipeline derived from the pBRDF model enabling model training and create a real dataset for evaluation of SfP approaches. Extensive ablation studies show the effectiveness of our designed architecture, and our approach outperforms existing methods in quantitative and qualitative experiments on real data. | 2021 | Panoramic Image Reflection RemovalabstractThis paper studies the problem of panoramic image reflection removal, aiming at reliving the content ambiguity between reflection and transmission scenes. Although a partial view of the reflection scene is included in the panoramic image, it cannot be utilized directly due to its misalignment with the reflection-contaminated image. We propose a two-step approach to solve this problem, by first accomplishing geometric and photometric alignment for the reflection scene via a coarse-to-fine strategy, and then restoring the transmission scene via a recovery network. The proposed method is trained with a synthetic dataset and verified quantitatively with a real panoramic image dataset. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by the significant performance advantage over single image-based reflection removal methods and generalization capacity to limited-FoV scenarios captured by conventional camera or mobile phone users. | 2021 | Spherical Wave Decomposition Based Polar Format Algorithm for ArcSAR ImagingabstractArc synthetic aperture radar (ArcSAR) is a remote imaging technology with the ability of wide field of view in the principle of ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR). The existing ArcSAR imaging algorithms have the problems of low computational efficiency as the scene expands and reduced imaging accuracy caused by the slant-range approximation. To avoid these problems, this article proposes a polar coordinate format algorithm based on spherical wave decomposition. First, the echo signal in the form of spherical wave is decomposed into an integral of plane waves. Second, according to the integration, an angular filter can be constructed by virtue of the convolution theorem, which is used to eliminate the high-order phase error in the scanning angle direction. Next, the interpolation from the polar to rectangular coordinates on the filtered signal is performed to achieve decoupling of the scanning angle and wavenumber. Finally, the target focusing is achieved by 2-D inverse Fourier transform. In this article, the imaging process is analyzed through simulation experiments and compared with other imaging algorithms in terms of imaging accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, the actual data are used for verification. Lingran Zhao, Wenfei Bai |
