2025 DreamBeast: Distilling 3D Fantastical Animals with Part-Aware Knowledge Transfer
abstract
We present DreamBeast, a novel method based on score distillation sampling (SDS) for generating fantastical 3D animal assets composed of distinct parts. Existing SDS methods often struggle with this generation task due to a limited understanding of part-level semantics in text-to-image diffusion models. While recent diffusion models, such as Stable Diffusion 3, demonstrate a better part-level understanding, they are prohibitively slow and exhibit other common problems associated with single-view diffusion models. DreamBeast overcomes this limitation through a novel part-aware knowledge transfer mechanism. For each generated asset, we efficiently extract part-level knowledge from the Stable Diffusion 3 model into a 3D Part-Affinity implicit representation. This enables us to instantly generate Part-Affinity maps from arbitrary camera views, which we then use to modulate the guidance of a multi-view diffusion model during SDS to create 3D assets of fantastical animals. DreamBeast significantly enhances the quality of generated 3D creatures with user-specified part compositions while reducing computational overhead, as demonstrated by extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations.

2025 3D-GPT: Procedural 3D Modeling with Large Language Models
abstract
In the pursuit of efficient automated content creation, procedural generation, leveraging modifiable parameters and rule-based systems, has emerged as a promising approach. Nonetheless, this can be a demanding endeavor, given its intricate nature necessitating a deep understanding of rules, algorithms, and parameters. To reduce workload, we introduce 3D-GPT, a framework utilizing large language models (LLMs) for instruction-driven 3D modeling. 3D-GPT positions LLMs as proficient problem solving agents, dissecting the procedural 3D modeling tasks into accessible segments and appointing the appropriate agent for each task. 3D-GPT integrates three core agents: the task dispatch agent, the conceptualization agent, and the modeling agent. They collaboratively achieve two objectives. First, they enhance the concise initial scene descriptions, elaborating details while dynamically adapting the text based on subsequent instructions. Second, they integrate procedural generation, extracting parameter values from enriched text to seamlessly interface with 3D software for asset creation. Our empirical investigations confirm that 3D-GPT not only correctly interprets instructions, delivering reliable results but also collaborates effectively with human designers. Furthermore, it integrates directly with Blender, unlocking expanded manipulation possibilities. Our work highlights the potential of LLMs in 3D modeling, offering a basic framework for future advancements in scene generation and animation.

2025 Pos3R: 6D Pose Estimation for Unseen Objects Made Easy
abstract
Foundation models have significantly reduced the need for task-specific training, while also enhancing generaliz-ability. However, state-of-the-art 6D pose estimators either require further training with pose supervision or neglect advances obtainable from 3D foundation models. The latter is a missed opportunity, since these models are better equipped to predict 3D-consistent features, which are of significant utility for the pose estimation task. To address this gap, we propose Pos3R, a method for estimating the 6D pose of any object from a single RGB image, making extensive use of a 3D reconstruction foundation model and requiring no additional training. We identify template selection as a particular bottleneck for existing methods that is significantly alleviated by the use of a 3D model, which can more easily distinguish between template poses than a 2D model. Despite its simplicity, Pos3R achieves competitive performance on the Benchmark for 6D Object Pose Estimation (BOP), matching or surpassing existing refinement-free methods. Additionally, Pos3R integrates seamlessly with render-and-compare refinement techniques, demonstrating adaptability for high-precision applications.

2024 Differentiable Neural Surface Refinement for Modeling Transparent Objects
abstract
Neural implicit surface reconstruction leveraging volume rendering has led to significant advances in multi-view reconstruction. However, results for transparent objects can be very poor, primarily because the rendering function fails to account for the intricate light transport induced by refraction and reflection. In this study, we introduce trans-parent neural surface refinement (TNSR), a novel surface reconstruction framework that explicitly incorporates phys-ical refraction and reflection tracing. Beginning with an initial, approximate surface, our method employs sphere tracing combined with Snell's law to cast both reflected and refracted rays. Central to our proposal is an innovative differentiable technique devised to allow signals from the pho-tometric evidence to propagate back to the surface model by considering how the surface bends and reflects light rays. This allows us to connect surface refinement with volume rendering, enabling end-to-end optimization solely on multi-view RGB images. In our experiments, TNSR demonstrates significant improvements in novel view synthesis and geometry estimation of transparent objects, without prior knowledge of the refractive index.

2024 Ray Deformation Networks for Novel View Synthesis of Refractive Objects
abstract
Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have demonstrated exceptional capabilities in creating photorealistic novel views using volume rendering on a radiance field. However, the intrinsic assumption of straight light rays within NeRF becomes a limitation when dealing with transparent or translucent objects that exhibit refraction, and therefore have curved light paths. This hampers the ability of these approaches to accurately model the appearance of refractive objects, resulting in suboptimal novel view synthesis and geometry estimates. To address this issue, we propose an innovative solution using deformable networks to learn a tailored deformation field for refractive objects. Our approach predicts position and direction offsets, allowing NeRF to model the curved light paths caused by refraction and therefore the complex and highly view-dependent appearances of refractive objects. We also introduce a regularization strategy that encourages piece-wise linear light paths, since most physical systems can be approximated with a piece-wise constant index of refraction. By seamlessly integrating our deformation networks into the NeRF framework, our method significantly improves rendering refractive objects from novel views.

2024 NeRFEditor: Differentiable Style Decomposition for 3D Scene Editing
abstract
We present NeRFEditor, an efficient learning framework for 3D scene editing, which takes a video as input and outputs a high-quality, identity-preserving stylized 3D scene. Our goal is to bridge the gap between 2D and 3D editing, catering to a wide array of creative modifications such as reference-guided alterations, text-based prompts, and user interactions. We achieve this by encouraging a pre-trained StyleGAN model and a NeRF model to learn mutually consistent renderings. Specifically, we use NeRF to generate numerous (image, camera pose)-pairs to train an adjustor module, which adapts the StyleGAN latent code for generating high-fidelity stylized images from any given viewing angle. To extrapolate edits to novel views, i.e., those not seen by StyleGAN pre-training, while maintaining 360° consistency, we propose a second self-supervised module that maps these views into the hidden space of StyleGAN. Together these two modules produce sufficient guidance for NeRF to learn consistent stylization effects across the full range of views. Experiments show that NeRFEditor outperforms prior work on benchmark and real-world scenes with better editability, fidelity, and identity preservation.
