Shape-adaptivewavelet encoding of depth mapsabstractWe present a novel depth-map codec aimed at free-viewpoint 3DTV. The proposed codec relies on a shape-adaptive wavelet transform and an explicit representation of the locations of major depth edges. Unlike classical wavelet transforms, the shape-adaptive transform generates small wavelet coefficients along depth edges, which greatly reduces the data entropy. The wavelet transform is implemented by shape-adaptive lifting, which enables fast computations and perfect reconstruction. We also develop a novel rate-constrained edge detection algorithm, which integrates the idea of significance bitplanes into the Canny edge detector. Along with a simple chain code, it provides an efficient way to extract and encode edges. Experimental results on synthetic and real data confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, with PSNR gains of 5 dB and more over the Middlebury dataset. Matthieu Maitre, Minh N. Do

Symmetric multi-view stereo reconstruction from planar camera arraysabstractWe present a novel stereo algorithm which performs surface reconstruction from planar camera arrays. It incorporates the merits of both generic camera arrays and rectified binocular setups, recovering large surfaces like the former and performing efficient computations like the latter. First, we introduce a rectification algorithm which gives freedom in the design of camera arrays and simplifies photometric and geometric computations. We then define a novel set of data-fusion functions over 4-neighborhoods of cameras, which treat all cameras symmetrically and enable standard binocular stereo algorithms to handle arrays with arbitrary number of cameras. In particular, we introduce a photometric fusion function which handles partial visibility and extracts depth information along both horizontal and vertical baselines. Finally, we show that layered depth images and sprites with depth can be efficiently extracted from the rectified 3D space. Experimental results on real images confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, which reconstructs dense surfaces larger by 20% on Tsukuba. Matthieu Maitre, Yoshihisa Shinagawa, Minh N. Do

High-dynamic range compression using a fast multiscale optimizationabstractHigh-dynamic-range medical images have intensity values which cannot be visualized on current low-dynamic-range displays. In this paper, we introduce a fast range compression method which avoids common artifacts such as loss of contrast, haloes and gradient inversions. The proposed method first compresses the intensity range using a global transfer function. It then extracts and enhances weak structures using a multiscale decomposition and artifact correction. We show that artifact correction can be formulated as a linear-programming problem, for which we propose an efficient approximate solution. Experiments on real data demonstrate the effectiveness and speed of the proposed algorithm. Matthieu Maitre, Yunqiang Chen, Tong Fang

Transparent layer separation for dual energy imagingabstractDual energy X-ray imaging can separate materials of different properties into different layers for more detailed inspection. However, motion during the acquisition of dual energy images causes significant challenges to layer separation. We propose a novel separation algorithm based on the sparse features in gradient domain. Instead of decomposing the image intensity values, we separate sparse gradient features to different layers and then reconstruct the layers based on the decomposed gradient fields by solving the Poisson Equation. The structure tensor, based on directional quadrature filters, is used to classify and separate the gradient field. Evaluation on both synthesized data and real datasets proves its effectiveness and robustness to complex non-rigid motion. Yunqiang Chen, Matthieu Maitre, Tong Fang

Joint encoding of the depth image based representation using shape-adaptive waveletsabstractWe present a novel codec of depth-image-based representations for free-viewpoint 3D-TV. The proposed codec relies on a shape-adaptive wavelet transform and an explicit representation of the locations of major depth edges. Unlike classical wavelet transforms, the shape-adaptive transform generates small wavelet coefficients along depth edges, which greatly reduces the data entropy. The codec also shares the edge information between the depth map and the image to reduce their correlation. The wavelet transform is implemented by shape-adaptive lifting, which enables fast computations and perfect reconstruction. Experimental results on real data confirm the superiority of the proposed codec, with PSNR gains of up to 5.46 dB on the depth map and up to 0.19 dB on the image compared to standard wavelet codecs. | 2008 | Wavelet-Based Joint Estimation and Encoding of Depth-Image-Based Representations for Free-Viewpoint RenderingabstractWe propose a wavelet-based codec for the static depth-image-based representation, which allows viewers to freely choose the viewpoint. The proposed codec jointly estimates and encodes the unknown depth map from multiple views using a novel rate-distortion (RD) optimization scheme. The rate constraint reduces the ambiguity of depth estimation by favoring piecewise-smooth depth maps. The optimization is efficiently solved by a novel dynamic programming along trees of integer wavelet coefficients. The codec encodes the image and the depth map jointly to decrease their redundancy and to provide a RD-optimized bitrate allocation between the two. The codec also offers scalability both in resolution and in quality. Experiments on real data show the effectiveness of the proposed codec. Matthieu Maitre, Yoshihisa Shinagawa, Minh N. Do

Rate-Distortion Optimal Depth Maps in the Wavelet Domain for Free-Viewpoint RenderingabstractWe consider the problem of estimating and encoding depth maps from multiple views in the context of 3D-TV with free-viewpoint rendering. We propose a novel codec based on the Rate-Distortion (RD) optimization of the depth-image-based representation (DIBR) in the wavelet domain. The rate constraint enforces the piecewise smoothness of the depth map, which improves the reliability of its estimation. We propose an efficient optimal solution for the joint estimation and coding of the depth map using dynamic programming along the tree of wavelet coefficients. It also provides an automatic bitrate allocation between images and depth maps. Experiments on real data show that the wavelet approach can improve RD performances over a state-of-the-art technique that uses quadtrees. Matthieu Maitre, Yoshihisa Shinagawa, Minh N. Do

3-D Model-Based Frame Interpolation for Distributed Video Coding of Static ScenesabstractThis paper addresses the problem of side information extraction for distributed coding of videos captured by a camera moving in a 3-D static environment. Examples of targeted applications are augmented reality, remote-controlled robots operating in hazardous environments, or remote exploration by drones. It explores the benefits of the structure-from-motion paradigm for distributed coding of this type of video content. Two interpolation methods constrained by the scene geometry, based either on block matching along epipolar lines or on 3-D mesh fitting, are first developed. These techniques are based on a robust algorithm for sub-pel matching of feature points, which leads to semi-dense correspondences between key frames. However, their rate-distortion (RD) performances are limited by misalignments between the side information and the actual Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frames due to the assumption of linear motion between key frames. To cope with this problem, two feature point tracking techniques are introduced, which recover the camera parameters of the WZ frames. A first technique, in which the frames remain encoded separately, performs tracking at the decoder and leads to significant RD performance gains. A second technique further improves the RD performances by allowing a limited tracking at the encoder. As an additional benefit, statistics on tracks allow the encoder to adapt the key frame frequency to the video motion content. Matthieu Maitre, Christine Guillemot, Luce Morin

3D Scene Modeling for Distributed Video CodingabstractThe compression efficiency of distributed video-coding (DVC) suffers from the necessity of transmitting a large number of key-frames which are intra-coded. This paper describes a new 3D model-based DVC approach which reduces the key- frame frequency. The decoder first recovers a 3D model from the key-frames. It then predicts the intermediate frames by projecting it onto 2D image planes and applying image-based rendering techniques. This paper also introduces a new quasi-DVC method relying on a limited point tracking at the encoder. It greatly improves the prediction PSNR, while only slightly increasing the encoder complexity. It also allows the encoder to adaptively select the key-frames based on the video motion-content. Matthieu Maitre, Christine Guillemot, Luce Morin

| 2006 | Automatic 3-D Grayscale Volume Matching and Shape AnalysisabstractRecently, shape matching in three dimensions (3-D) has been gaining importance in a wide variety of fields such as computer graphics, computer vision, medicine, and biology, with applications such as object recognition, medical diagnosis, and quantitative morphological analysis of biological operations. Automatic shape matching techniques developed in the field of computer graphics handle object surfaces, but ignore intensities of inner voxels. In biology and medical imaging, voxel intensities obtained by computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imagery (MRI), and confocal microscopes are important to determine point correspondences. Nevertheless, most biomedical volume matching techniques require human interactions, and automatic methods assume matched objects to have very similar shapes so as to avoid combinatorial explosions of point. This article is aimed at decreasing the gap between the two fields. The proposed method automatically finds dense point correspondences between two grayscale volumes; i.e., finds a correspondent in the second volume for every voxel in the first volume, based on the voxel intensities. Mutiresolutional pyramids are introduced to reduce computational load and handle highly plastic objects. We calculate the average shape of a set of similar objects and give a measure of plasticity to compare them. Matching results can also be used to generate intermediate volumes for morphing. We use various data to validate the effectiveness of our method: we calculate the average shape and plasticity of a set of fly brain cells, and we also match a human skull and an orangutan skull.
