2024 Focus on your Geometry: Exploiting the Potential of Multi-Frame Stereo Depth Estimation Pre-training for 3D Object Detection
abstract
Existing camera-based 3D object detection methods yield inaccurate position, scale, and orientation results due to the inherent challenge of ill-posed depth estimation from 2D images. Recent research has demonstrated that pre-training depth estimation from a single frame substantially enhances the quality of camera-based 3D object detection. We hypothesize that integrating multi-view stereo matching technology into the pretraining process can equip the backbone model with superior geometric feature extraction capabilities, thereby further improving 3D object detection performance. Building upon this premise, we propose MVS3D, a novel depth estimation pre-training method for camera-based 3D object detection. MVS3D incorporates a VMS (Video-stream-based Multi-view Stereo) module and a PME (Pose and Motion Estimation) module, which collectively encourage the backbone to explicitly learning 3D geometric information from image streams through stereo matching. Our method enables existing camera-based 3D object detection frameworks to seamlessly integrate our pre-trained backbone weight, thereby enhancing detection performance without necessitating extensive modifications. Extensive experimental results on nuScenes dataset show that loading the pre-trained weight from MVS3D can significantly improve the mean average precision (mAP) and nuScenes detection score (NDS) of both existing single-frame and multi-frame camera-based methods.

2023 Hierarchical Prompt Learning for Multi-Task Learning
abstract
Vision-language models (VLMs) can effectively transfer to various vision tasks via prompt learning. Real-world scenarios often require adapting a model to multiple similar yet distinct tasks. Existing methods focus on learning a specific prompt for each task, limiting the ability to exploit potentially shared information from other tasks. Naively training a task-shared prompt using a combination of all tasks ignores fine-grained task correlations. Significant discrepancies across tasks could cause negative transferring. Considering this, we present Hierarchical Prompt (HiPro) learning, a simple and effective method for jointly adapting a pre-trained VLM to multiple downstream tasks. Our method quantifies inter-task affinity and subsequently constructs a hierarchical task tree. Task-shared prompts learned by internal nodes explore the information within the corresponding task group, while task-individual prompts learned by leaf nodes obtain fine-grained information targeted at each task. The combination of hierarchical prompts provides high-quality content of different granularity. We evaluate HiPro on four multi-task learning datasets. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

2020 GPS-Net: Graph-based Photometric Stereo Network
abstract
Learning-based photometric stereo methods predict the surface normal either in a per-pixel or an all-pixel manner. Per-pixel methods explore the inter-image intensity variation of each pixel but ignore features from the intra-image spatial domain. All-pixel methods explore the intra-image intensity variation of each input image but pay less attention to the inter-image lighting variation. In this paper, we present a Graph-based Photometric Stereo Network, which unifies per-pixel and all-pixel processings to explore both inter-image and intra-image information. For per-pixel operation, we propose the Unstructured Feature Extraction Layer to connect an arbitrary number of input image-light pairs into graph structures, and introduce Structure-aware Graph Convolution filters to balance the input data by appropriately weighting shadows and specular highlights. For all-pixel operation, we propose the Normal Regression Network to make efficient use of the intra-image spatial information for predicting a surface normal map with rich details. Experimental results on the real-world benchmark show that our method achieves excellent performance under both sparse and dense lighting distributions.
