| 2026 | VLN-MME: Diagnosing MLLMs as Language-guided Visual Navigation AgentsabstractMultimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities across a wide range of vision-language tasks. However, their performance as embodied agents, which requires multi-round interaction with spatial reasoning and sequential action prediction, needs further exploration. Our work investigates this potential in the context of Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) by introducing a unified and extensible simulation-free evaluation framework to probe MLLMs as zero-shot agents, named VLN-MME. Simplifying the evaluation with a highly modular and accessible design streamlines experiments, enabling structured comparisons and component-level ablations across diverse MLLM architectures, agent designs, and navigation tasks. Crucially, enabled by VLN-MME, we observe that enhancing prevalent agents with Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning and self-reflection leads to an unexpected performance decrease. This suggests MLLMs exhibit poor context awareness in embodied navigation tasks; although they can follow instructions and structure their output, their 3D spatial reasoning fidelity is low. Furthermore, we demonstrate that agent performance could be largely improved with simple failure cases in context learning. VLN-MME lays the groundwork for systematic evaluation of general-purpose MLLMs in embodied navigation settings and reveals limitations in their sequential decision-making capabilities. We believe these findings offer crucial guidance for MLLM post-training as embodied agents. Xunyi Zhao, Gengze Zhou, Qi Wu 0001 |

| 2025 | HiRemate: Hierarchical Approach for Efficient Re-materialization of Neural NetworksabstractTraining deep neural networks (DNNs) on memory-limited GPUs is challenging, as storing intermediate activations often exceeds available memory. Re-materialization, a technique that preserves exact computations, addresses this by selectively recomputing activations instead of storing them. However, existing methods either fail to scale, lack generality, or introduce excessive execution overhead. We introduce ${\mbox{HiRemate}}$ a ${\textit hierarchical}$ re-materialization framework that recursively partitions large computation graphs, applies optimized solvers at multiple levels, and merges solutions into a global efficient training schedule. This enables scalability to significantly larger graphs than prior ILP-based methods while keeping runtime overhead low. Designed for single-GPU models and activation re-materialization, HiRemate extends the feasibility of training networks with thousands of graph nodes, surpassing prior methods in both efficiency and scalability. Experiments on various types of networks yield up to 50-70% memory reduction with only 10-15% overhead, closely matching optimal solutions while significantly reducing solver time. Seamlessly integrating with PyTorch Autograd, HiRemate requires almost no code change to use, enabling broad adoption in memory-constrained deep learning. | 2023 | Progressive Multi-View Fusion for 3D Human Pose EstimationabstractIn multi-view 3D human pose estimation (HPE), viewpoint images have large variability due to factors like camera angles and occlusion, making feature extraction and fusion across viewpoints challenging. To address these concerns, we propose a progressive multi-view 3D HPE transformer framework, which achieves effective intra-view pose feature extraction and cross-view fusion by embedding various multi-view fusion methods in the feature extraction process. In order to fully extract spatial semantic features of human joints, we first construct a cross-view spatial fusion module performing spatial feature fusion across adjacent views while mining useful spatial knowledge. To enhance the pose features and alleviate the depth ambiguity problem, we further develop a multi-view spatial-temporal fusion module to extract effective temporal contextual information within the viewpoint and fuse spatial-temporal features across multiple viewpoints. Extensive experiments on two popular 3D HPE benchmarks validate the efficacy and superiority of our method. It outperforms several state-of-the-art methods, effectively alleviates depth ambiguity, and improves 3D pose accuracy without providing camera parameters or complex loss functions. | 2023 | Rockmate: an Efficient, Fast, Automatic and Generic Tool for Re-materialization in PyTorchabstractWe propose Rockmate to control the memory requirements when training PyTorch DNN models. Rockmate is an automatic tool that starts from the model code and generates an equivalent model, using a predefined amount of memory for activations, at the cost of a few re-computations. Rockmate automatically detects the structure of computational and data dependencies and rewrites the initial model as a sequence of complex blocks. We show that such a structure is widespread and can be found in many models in the literature (Transformer based models, ResNet, RegNets,...). This structure allows us to solve the problem in a fast and efficient way, using an adaptation of Checkmate (too slow on the whole model but general) at the level of individual blocks and an adaptation of Rotor (fast but limited to sequential models) at the level of the sequence itself. We show through experiments on many models that Rockmate is as fast as Rotor and as efficient as Checkmate, and that it allows in many cases to obtain a significantly lower memory consumption for activations (by a factor of 2 to 5) for a rather negligible overhead (of the order of 10% to 20%). Rockmate is open source and available at https://github.com/topal-team/rockmate. Xunyi Zhao, Théotime Le Hellard, Lionel Eyraud-Dubois, Julia Gusak, Olivier Beaumont |

| 2022 | Survey on Efficient Training of Large Neural NetworksabstractModern Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) require significant memory to store weight, activations, and other intermediate tensors during training. Hence, many models don’t fit one GPU device or can be trained using only a small per-GPU batch size. This survey provides a systematic overview of the approaches that enable more efficient DNNs training. We analyze techniques that save memory and make good use of computation and communication resources on architectures with a single or several GPUs. We summarize the main categories of strategies and compare strategies within and across categories. Along with approaches proposed in the literature, we discuss available implementations.
