2018 Tracking of Multiple Fundamental Frequencies in Diplophonic Voices
abstract
Diplophonia is a type of pathological voice in which two fundamental frequencies (fo) are present simultaneously. Specialized audio analyzers that can handle up to two fos in diplophonic voices are in their infancy. We propose the tracking of up to two fos in diplophonic voices by audio waveform modeling (AWM), which involves obtaining candidates by repetitive execution of the Viterbi algorithm, followed by waveform Fourier synthesis, and heuristic candidate selection with majority voting. Our approach is evaluated with reference fo-tracks obtained from laryngeal highspeed videos of 29 sustained phonations and compared to state-of-the-art tracking algorithms for multiple fos. An accurate and a fast variant of our algorithm are tested. The median error rate of the accurate variant is 6.52%, whereas the most accurate benchmark achieves 11.11%. The fast variant is more than twice as fast as the fastest relevant benchmark, and the median error rate is 9.52%. Furthermore, illustrative results of connected speech analysis are reported. Our approach may help to improve detection and analysis of diplophonia in clinical research and practice, as well as to advance synthesis of disordered voices.

2015 Vocal tremor analysis via AM-FM decomposition of empirical modes of the glottal cycle length time series
abstract
The presentation concerns a method that obtains the size and frequency of vocal tremor in speech sounds sustained by normal speakers and patients suffering from neurological disorders. The glottal cycle lengths are tracked in the temporal domain via salience analysis and dynamic programming. The cycle length time series is then decomposed into a sum of oscillating components by empirical mode decomposition the instantaneous envelopes and frequencies of which are obtained via an AM-FM decomposition.Based on their average instantaneous frequencies, the empirical modes are then assigned to four categories (intonation, physiological tremor, neurological tremor as well as jitter) and added within each. The within-category size of the cycle length perturbations is estimated via the standard deviation of the empirical mode sum divided by the average cycle length. The tremor frequency within the neurological tremor category is obtained via a weighted instantaneous average of the mode frequencies followed by a weighted temporal average. The method is applied to two corpora of vowels sustained by 123 and 74 control and 456 and 205 Parkinson speakers respectively.

2014 Bivariate analysis of disordered connected speech using temporal and spectral acoustic cues
abstract
The presentation concerns the assessment of disordered voices produced by dysphonic speakers. The empirical mode decomposition algorithm is used to decompose the log of the magnitude spectrum of the speech signal into its harmonic, envelope and noise components and the harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR) is used to summarize the overall quality of the disordered voices. The present study aims at improving a previously proposed algorithm by incorporating an appropriate method that estimates automatically the thresholds required by the algorithm without knowledge of the fundamental frequency and combining the temporal acoustic marker named segmental signal-to-dysperiodicity ratio (SDRSEG) with the harmonic-to-noise ratio in order to predict the degree of perceived hoarseness. The performances of the bivariate analysis-based approach for vocal dysperiodicities assessment in terms of correlation of the predicted perceived grade scores with the original perceived degree of hoarseness are investigated using a large corpus comprising concatenations of two Dutch sentences followed by vowel [a].

2013 Physics-based synthesis of disordered voices
abstract
The purpose of this work is the development of a synthesizer of disordered voices, i.e., a generator of sounds that mimic the vocal quality of speakers that suffer from a voice disorder or laryngeal pathology. A physics-based modeling strategy is fol-lowed for physiological fidelity and a direct relation between the physiology and the perception of vocal quality. The synthe-sizer is based on a smooth and asymmetric version of a lumped mucosal wave model of the vocal folds, coupled to a wave-reflexion analog of the vocal tract. In this paper, we report our progress and present results of synthetic voices with vari-ous levels of vocal frequency jitter, additive pulsatile noise at the glottis due to airflow turbulence, and tension imbalance be-tween the left and right vocal folds. Index Terms: voice, voice synthesis, voice disorders, vocal folds 1.

2006 Frame-Based Acoustic Cues of Vocal Dysperiodicity in Connected Speech
abstract
Acoustic analysis of connected speech is carried out by means of a generalized variogram to extract vocal dysperiocities. A segmental signal-to-dysperiodicity ratio (SDRSEG) is used to predict the perceived degree of hoarseness. The corpora comprise four French sentences as well as vowels [a] produced by 22 male and female normophonic and dysphonic speakers. It is shown that the average SDRSEG correlates better with perceptual scores of hoarseness than the global signal-to-dysperiodicity ratio (SDR). The perceptual scores are based on comparative judgments by six listeners of pairs of speech samples. In addition, multiple linear regression analysis of four statistical descriptors of SDRSEG is performed to gauge whether higher-order statistics are valid predictors of perceived hoarseness

2005 Fundamental Frequency Estimation and Vocal Tremor Analysis by means of Morlet Wavelet Transforms
abstract
A vocal frequency estimation method and an analysis of vocal tremor are proposed. Vocal tremor is a narrow-band low-frequency perturbation of the vocal frequency. The vocal frequency estimate is the instantaneous frequency calculated in an automatically selected frequency-band of a wavelet transform of the speech signal. The vocal frequency estimation method is compared to an event-based method and a Hilbert-transform method for speech signals. The tremor frequency and amplitude are obtained by means of a continuous wavelet transform applied to the instantaneous frequency trace. The proposed analysis has been applied to parkinsonian and normophonic speakers. The results suggest that the vocal tremor features differ for both groups.

2005 Dysphonic Speech Analysis Using Generalized Variogram
abstract
Acoustic analyses of speech signals are popular in the framework of the clinical evaluation of voice and the diagnosis of disease. We propose a new strategy for dysphonic speech analysis that extracts vocal dysperiocities by using a generalized form of the variogram. The generalized variogram allows the inherent drawbacks of both long-term and short-term linear prediction formulations, widely used in disordered speech analysis, to be overcome. The proposed approach uses a forgetting factor to account for the nonstationarity nature of the speech signal. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the double prediction-based technique.
