2023 Underwater Ranker: Learn Which Is Better and How to Be Better
abstract
In this paper, we present a ranking-based underwater image quality assessment (UIQA) method, abbreviated as URanker. The URanker is built on the efficient conv-attentional image Transformer. In terms of underwater images, we specially devise (1) the histogram prior that embeds the color distribution of an underwater image as histogram token to attend global degradation and (2) the dynamic cross-scale correspondence to model local degradation. The final prediction depends on the class tokens from different scales, which comprehensively considers multi-scale dependencies. With the margin ranking loss, our URanker can accurately rank the order of underwater images of the same scene enhanced by different underwater image enhancement (UIE) algorithms according to their visual quality. To achieve that, we also contribute a dataset, URankerSet, containing sufficient results enhanced by different UIE algorithms and the corresponding perceptual rankings, to train our URanker. Apart from the good performance of URanker, we found that a simple U-shape UIE network can obtain promising performance when it is coupled with our pre-trained URanker as additional supervision. In addition, we also propose a normalization tail that can significantly improve the performance of UIE networks. Extensive experiments demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of our method. The key designs of our method are discussed. Our code and dataset are available at https://li-chongyi.github.io/URanker_files/.

2023 DNF: Decouple and Feedback Network for Seeing in the Dark
abstract
The exclusive properties of RAW data have shown great potential for low-light image enhancement. Nevertheless, the performance is bottlenecked by the inherent limitations of existing architectures in both single-stage and multi-stage methods. Mixed mapping across two different domains, noise-to-clean and RAW-to-sRGB, misleads the single-stage methods due to the domain ambiguity. The multi-stage methods propagate the information merely through the resulting image of each stage, neglecting the abundant features in the lossy image-level dataflow. In this paper, we probe a generalized solution to these bottlenecks and propose a Decouple aNd Feedback framework, abbreviated as DNF. To mitigate the domain ambiguity, domain-specific subtasks are decoupled, along with fully utilizing the unique properties in RAW and sRGB domains. The feature propagation across stages with a feedback mechanism avoids the information loss caused by image-level dataflow. The two key insights of our method resolve the inherent limitations of RAW data-based low-light image enhancement satisfactorily, empowering our method to outperform the previous state-of-the-art method by a large margin with only 19% parameters, achieving 0.97dB and 1.30dB PSNR improvements on the Sony and Fuji subsets of SID.

2023 AMT: All-Pairs Multi-Field Transforms for Efficient Frame Interpolation
abstract
We present All-Pairs Multi-Field Transforms (AMT), a new network architecture for video frame interpolation. It is based on two essential designs. First, we build bidirectional correlation volumes for all pairs of pixels, and use the predicted bilateral flows to retrieve correlations for updating both flows and the interpolated content feature. Second, we derive multiple groups of fine-grained flow fields from one pair of updated coarse flows for performing backward warping on the input frames separately. Combining these two designs enables us to generate promising task-oriented flows and reduce the difficulties in modeling large motions and handling occluded areas during frame interpolation. These qualities promote our model to achieve state-of-the-art performance on various benchmarks with high efficiency. Moreover, our convolution-based model competes favorably compared to Transformer-based models in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Our code is available at https://github.com/MCG-NKU/AMT.

2023 Lighting Every Darkness in Two Pairs : A Calibration-Free Pipeline for RAW Denoising
abstract
Calibration-based methods have dominated RAW image denoising under extremely low-light environments. However, these methods suffer from several main deficiencies: 1) the calibration procedure is laborious and time-consuming, 2) denoisers for different cameras are difficult to transfer, and 3) the discrepancy between synthetic noise and real noise is enlarged by high digital gain. To overcome the above shortcomings, we propose a calibration-free pipeline for Lighting Every Drakness (LED), regardless of the digital gain or camera sensor. Instead of calibrating the noise parameters and training repeatedly, our method could adapt to a target camera only with few-shot paired data and fine-tuning. In addition, well-designed structural modification during both stages alleviates the domain gap between synthetic and real noise without any extra computational cost. With 2 pairs for each additional digital gain (in total 6 pairs) and 0.5% iterations, our method achieves superior performance over other calibration-based methods.

2022 Multi-Mode Interactive Image Segmentation
abstract
Large-scale pixel-level annotations are scarce for current data-hungry medical image analysis models. For the fast acquisition of annotations, an economical and efficient interactive medical image segmentation method is urgently needed. However, current techniques usually fail in many cases, as their interaction styles cannot work on various inherent ambiguities of medical images, such as irregular shapes and fuzzy boundaries. To address this problem, we propose a multi-mode interactive segmentation framework for medical images, where diverse interaction modes can be chosen and allowed to cooperate with each other. In our framework, users can encircle the target regions with various initial interaction modes according to the structural complexity. Then, based on the initial segmentation, users can jointly utilize the region and boundary interactions to refine the mislabeled regions caused by different ambiguities. We evaluate our framework on extensive medical images, including X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, endoscopy, and photo. Sufficient experimental results and user study show that our framework is a reliable choice for image annotation in various real scenes.

2022 Online Attention Accumulation for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation
abstract
Object attention maps generated by image classifiers are usually used as priors for weakly supervised semantic segmentation. However, attention maps usually locate the most discriminative object parts. The lack of integral object localization maps heavily limits the performance of weakly supervised segmentation approaches. This paper attempts to investigate a novel way to identify entire object regions in a weakly supervised manner. We observe that image classifiers' attention maps at different training phases may focus on different parts of the target objects. Based on this observation, we propose an online attention accumulation (OAA) strategy that utilizes the attention maps at different training phases to obtain more integral object regions. Specifically, we maintain a cumulative attention map for each target category in each training image and utilize it to record the discovered object regions at different training phases. Albeit OAA can effectively mine more object regions for most images, for some training images, the range of the attention movement is not large, limiting the generation of integral object attention regions. To overcome this problem, we propose incorporating an attention drop layer into the online attention accumulation process to enlarge the range of attention movement during training explicitly. Our method (OAA) can be plugged into any classification network and progressively accumulate the discriminative regions into cumulative attention maps as the training process goes. Additionally, we also explore utilizing the final cumulative attention maps to serve as the pixel-level supervision, which can further assist the network in discovering more integral object regions. When applying the resulting attention maps to the weakly supervised semantic segmentation task, our approach improves the existing state-of-the-art methods on the PASCAL VOC 2012 segmentation benchmark, achieving a mIoU score of 67.2 percent on the test set.

2022 Low-Light Image and Video Enhancement Using Deep Learning: A Survey
abstract
Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) aims at improving the perception or interpretability of an image captured in an environment with poor illumination. Recent advances in this area are dominated by deep learning-based solutions, where many learning strategies, network structures, loss functions, training data, etc. have been employed. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey to cover various aspects ranging from algorithm taxonomy to unsolved open issues. To examine the generalization of existing methods, we propose a low-light image and video dataset, in which the images and videos are taken by different mobile phones' cameras under diverse illumination conditions. Besides, for the first time, we provide a unified online platform that covers many popular LLIE methods, of which the results can be produced through a user-friendly web interface. In addition to qualitative and quantitative evaluation of existing methods on publicly available and our proposed datasets, we also validate their performance in face detection in the dark. This survey together with the proposed dataset and online platform could serve as a reference source for future study and promote the development of this research field. The proposed platform and dataset as well as the collected methods, datasets, and evaluation metrics are publicly available and will be regularly updated.
