| 2025 | RankCoT: Refining Knowledge for Retrieval-Augmented Generation through Ranking Chain-of-ThoughtsabstractRetrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) enhances the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) by incorporating external knowledge. However, LLMs still encounter challenges in effectively utilizing the knowledge from retrieved documents, often being misled by irrelevant or noisy information. To address this issue, we introduce RankCoT, a knowledge refinement method that incorporates reranking signals in generating CoT-based summarization for knowledge refinement based on given query and all retrieval documents.During training, RankCoT prompts the LLM to generate Chain-of-Thought (CoT) candidates based on the query and individual documents. It then fine-tunes the LLM to directly reproduce the best CoT from these candidate outputs based on all retrieved documents, which requires LLM to filter out irrelevant documents during generating CoT-style summarization.Additionally, RankCoT incorporates a self-reflection mechanism that further refines the CoT outputs, resulting in higher-quality training data. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of RankCoT, showing its superior performance over other knowledge refinement models.Further analysis reveals that RankCoT can provide shorter but effective refinement results, enabling the generator to produce more accurate answers. All code and data are available at https://github.com/NEUIR/RankCoT. | 2024 | Evaluating Fairness of Mask R-CNN for Kidney Infection Detection based on Renal Scintigraphyabstract99mTc-DMSA renal scan plays a crucial role in assessing functional abnormalities in the kidneys. A deep learning model, Mask R-CNN, showed much promise in diagnosing acute pyelonephritis, a type of kidney infection. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance and fairness of Mask R-CNN and Faster R-CNN using a99mTc-DMSA renal dataset. The classification results showed that Mask R-CNN achieved an accuracy of 0.89, while Faster R-CNN reached an accuracy of 0.88. Both models demonstrated strong classification capabilities for kidney conditions. Furthermore, the analysis of fairness across sex and age groups indicated that neither model exhibited significant bias, thereby supporting their suitability for clinical applications. Future research should consider integrating more patient data to further enhance the diagnostic capabilities and fairness assessments of the models. Mingyan Wu, Ha Wu, Zhiyu Wan |

| 2022 | Underwater Small Target Detection Based on Deformable Convolutional PyramidabstractDue to the problem of severe deformation, occlusion, diversified scenarios, general object detection methods cannot achieve satisfactory results in underwater object detection tasks. In this paper, we propose a two-stage Underwater Small Target Detection (USTD) network. In the proposed USTD, the Deformable Convolutional Pyramid(DCP) is proposed to deal with the problems of deformation, occlusion, and various object sizes effectively. Besides, we also propose a strategy of domain generalization based on curriculum learning to improve generalization in multi-domain environments, which is named as Phased Learning. Afterward, we construct an underwater target detection set (UTDS) to evaluate the accuracy of our method in underwater target detection tasks. Our method shows superior detection performance in experiments and reaches state-of-the-art for underwater target detection. Finally, in the 2020 China Underwater Robot Professional Contest (URPC), our method reached third place in terms of accuracy. | 2022 | Which One is Better? Self-supervised Temporal Coherence Learning for Skeleton Based Action RecognitionabstractRecently, researchers have achieved significant results in the skeleton based action recognition task. To better model the skeleton sequences, existing methods learned the feature representations in the self-supervised setting by solving pretext tasks, such as predicting the order of a shuffled skeleton sequence or verifying whether a given skeleton sequence is shuffled or not. However, these pretext tasks are either too challenging or too easy for the encoder to obtain a proper skeleton representation for action recognition. Therefore, we propose a novel self-pretraining pretext task, Which One Is Better (WOIB), to identify which one is more temporally coherent, given two shuffled skeleton sequences. Experiments on the NTU RGB+D, NTU RGB+D 120, and Kinetics-Skeleton datasets with different network architectures show significant improvements in recognition accuracy, demonstrating that such a well-designed pretext task is general and able to drive the encoder to learn more discriminative representations. | 2020 | Pose-aware Multi-feature Fusion Network for Driver Distraction RecognitionabstractTraffic accidents caused by distracted driving have gradually increased in recent years. In this work, we propose a novel multi-feature fusion network based on pose estimation, for image based distracted driving detection. Since hand is the most important part of driver to infer the distracted actions, our proposed method firstly detects hands using the human body posture information. In addition to the features extracted from the whole image, our network also include the important information of hand and human body posture. The global feature, hand and pose features are finally fused by weighted combination of probability vectors and concatenation of feature maps. The experimental results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on our own SZ Bus Driver dataset and the public AUC Distracted Driver dataset. Mingyan Wu, LinLin Shen |
