| 2026 | Embracing the Power of Known Class Bias in Open Set Recognition From a Reconstruction PerspectiveabstractThe open set known class bias is conventionally viewed as a fatal problem i.e., the models trained solely on known classes tend to fit unknown classes to known classes with high confidence in inference. Thus existing methods, without exception make a choice in two manners: most methods opt for eliminating the known class bias as much as possible with tireless efforts, while others circumvent the known class bias by employing a reconstruction method. However, in this paper, we challenge the two widely accepted approaches and present a novel proposition: the so-called harmful known class bias for most methods is, exactly conversely, beneficial for the reconstruction-based method and thus such known class bias can serve as a positive-incentive to the Open set recognition (OSR) models from a reconstruction perspective. Along this line, we propose the Bias Enhanced Reconstruction Learning (BERL) framework to enhance the known class bias respectively from the class level, model level and sample level. Specifically, at the class level, a specific representation is constructed in a supervised contrastive manner to avoid overgeneralization, while a diffusion model is employed by injecting the class prior to guide the biased reconstruction at the model level. Additionally, we leverage the advantages of the diffusion model to design a self-adaptive strategy, enabling effective sample-level biased sampling based on the information bottleneck theory. Experiments on various benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and performance superiority of the proposed method. Heyang Sun, Chuanxing Geng, Songcan Chen |

| 2024 | vEpiNet: A multimodal interictal epileptiform discharge detection method based on video and electroencephalogram dataabstractTo enhance deep learning-based automated interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) detection, this study proposes a multimodal method, vEpiNet, that leverages video and electroencephalogram (EEG) data. Datasets comprise 24 931 IED (from 484 patients) and 166 094 non-IED 4-second video-EEG segments. The video data is processed by the proposed patient detection method, with frame difference and Simple Keypoints (SKPS) capturing patients' movements. EEG data is processed with EfficientNetV2. The video and EEG features are fused via a multilayer perceptron. We developed a comparative model, termed nEpiNet, to test the effectiveness of the video feature in vEpiNet. The 10-fold cross-validation was used for testing. The 10-fold cross-validation showed high areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) in both models, with a slightly superior AUROC (0.9902) in vEpiNet compared to nEpiNet (0.9878). Moreover, to test the model performance in real-world scenarios, we set a prospective test dataset, containing 215 h of raw video-EEG data from 50 patients. The result shows that the vEpiNet achieves an area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 0.8623, surpassing nEpiNet's 0.8316. Incorporating video data raises precision from 70% (95% CI, 69.8%-70.2%) to 76.6% (95% CI, 74.9%-78.2%) at 80% sensitivity and reduces false positives by nearly a third, with vEpiNet processing one-hour video-EEG data in 5.7 min on average. Our findings indicate that video data can significantly improve the performance and precision of IED detection, especially in prospective real clinic testing. It suggests that vEpiNet is a clinically viable and effective tool for IED analysis in real-world applications. | 2024 | DCL: Dipolar Confidence Learning for Source-Free Unsupervised Domain AdaptationabstractSource-free unsupervised domain adaptation (SFUDA) aims to conduct prediction on the target domain by leveraging knowledge from the well-trained source model. Due to the absence of source data in the SFUDA setting, the existing methods mainly build the target classifier by fine-tuning the source model incorporated with empirical adaptation losses. Although these methods have achieved somewhat promising results, nearly all of them typically suffer from the closed-fitting dilemma that their models are dominantly affected by these easy-to-distinguish instances than those hard-to-distinguish ones, resulting from the absence of the labeled source data. To address aforementioned issues, we propose the Dipolar Confidence Learning (DCL) for SFUDA. Specifically, we conduct positive confidence learning on the samples with standard outputs to avoid overfitting of the model to these samples. In contrast, we perform negative confidence learning for the samples with abnormal outputs to optimize the complementary label, which forces the network to pay more attention to these confusing samples. Furthermore, to achieve more generalized domain alignment, both the confidence-based fuzzy mixup and rotation-based self-supervised learning are respectively constructed to boost the representation ability of the target model. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance superiority of the proposed method. | 2023 | VaBUS: Edge-Cloud Real-Time Video Analytics via Background Understanding and SubtractionabstractEdge-cloud collaborative video analytics is transforming the way data is being handled, processed, and transmitted from the ever-growing number of surveillance cameras around the world. To avoid wasting limited bandwidth on unrelated content transmission, existing video analytics solutions usually perform temporal or spatial filtering to realize aggressive compression of irrelevant pixels. However, most of them work in a context-agnostic way while being oblivious to the circumstances where the video content is happening and the context-dependent characteristics under the hood. In this work, we propose VaBUS, a real-time video analytics system that leverages the rich contextual information of surveillance cameras to reduce bandwidth consumption for semantic compression. As a task-oriented communication system, VaBUS dynamically maintains the background image of the video on the edge with minimal system overhead and sends only highly confident Region of Interests (RoIs) to the cloud through adaptive weighting and encoding. With a lightweight experience-driven learning module, VaBUS is able to achieve high offline inference accuracy even when network congestion occurs. Experimental results show that VaBUS reduces bandwidth consumption by 25.0%-76.9% while achieving 90.7% accuracy for both the object detection and human keypoint detection tasks. | 2022 | Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Through Dynamically Aligning Both the Feature and Label SpacesabstractIn unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA), a target-domain model is trained by the supervised knowledge from a source domain. Although UDA has recently received much attention, most existing UDA methods have ignored the alignment in label space while mostly concentrating on alignment of feature space. Even worse, they have payed less attention to the dynamic relationship between domain alignment and discrimination, leading to degenerated performance. In this work, we propose a new kind of UDA through aligning in both the feature and label spaces (DAFL), in which a dynamic weight is designed and deployed between domain alignment and discrimination enhancement according to their conditions. Specifically, the cross-domain distribution divergence is reduced by the weighted class-level feature space alignment as well as the compacted and discriminative label space alignment. Furthermore, the balancing weight between adaptation alignment and discrimination enhancement is dynamically adjusted to regularize the adversarial domain adaptation. Then, the generalization ability of the DAFL model is enhanced by adding discrepant classification with theoretical analysis. Finally, extensive experiments validate effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach. Qing Tian 0001, Heyang Sun, Songcan Chen, Hujun Yin |

| 2022 | Heterogeneous Domain Adaptation With Structure and Classification Space AlignmentabstractDomain adaptation (DA) aims at facilitating the target model training by leveraging knowledge from related but distribution-inconsistent source domain. Most of the previous DA works concentrate on homogeneous scenarios, where the source and target domains are assumed to share the same feature space. Nevertheless, frequently, in reality, the domains are not consistent in not only data distribution but also the representation space and feature dimensions. That is, these domains are heterogeneous. Although many works have attempted to handle such heterogeneous DA (HDA) by transforming HDA to homogeneous counterparts or performing DA jointly with domain transformation, nearly all of them just concentrate on the feature and distribution alignment across domains, neglecting the structure and classification space preservation for domains themselves. In this work, we propose a novel HDA model, namely, heterogeneous classification space alignment (HCSA), which leverages knowledge from both the source samples and model parameters to the target. In HCSA, structure preservation, distribution, and classification space alignment are implemented, jointly with feature representation by transferring both the source-domain representation and model knowledge. Moreover, we design an alternating algorithm to optimize the HCSA model with guaranteed convergence and complexity analysis. In addition, the HCSA model is further extended with deep network architecture. Finally, we experimentally evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method by showing its superiority to the compared approaches. Qing Tian 0001, Heyang Sun, Meng Cao 0005, Yi Chu, Songcan Chen |
