2025 HoT-VI: Reparameterizable Variational Inference for Capturing Instance-Level High-Order Correlations
abstract
Mean-field variational inference (VI), despite its scalability, is limited by the independence assumption, making it unsuitable for scenarios with correlated data instances. Existing structured VI methods either focus on correlations among latent dimensions which lack scalability for modeling instance-level correlations, or are restricted to simple first-order dependencies, limiting their expressiveness. In this paper, we propose High-order Tree-structured Variational Inference (HoT-VI), that explicitly models $k$-order instance-level correlations among latent variables. By expressing the global posterior through overlapping $k$-dimensional local marginals, our method enables efficient parameterized sampling via a sequential procedure. To ensure the validity of these marginals, we introduce a conditional correlation parameterization method that guarantees positive definiteness of their correlation matrices. We further extend our method with a tree-structured backbone to capture more flexible dependency patterns. Extensive experiments on time-series and graph-structured datasets demonstrate that modeling higher-order correlations leads to significantly improved posterior approximations and better performance across various downstream tasks.

2024 MorphGrower: A Synchronized Layer-by-layer Growing Approach for Plausible Neuronal Morphology Generation
abstract
Neuronal morphology is essential for studying brain functioning and understanding neurodegenerative disorders. As acquiring real-world morphology data is expensive, computational approaches for morphology generation have been studied. Traditional methods heavily rely on expert-set rules and parameter tuning, making it difficult to generalize across different types of morphologies. Recently, MorphVAE was introduced as the sole learning-based method, but its generated morphologies lack plausibility, i.e., they do not appear realistic enough and most of the generated samples are topologically invalid. To fill this gap, this paper proposes **MorphGrower**, which mimicks the neuron natural growth mechanism for generation. Specifically, MorphGrower generates morphologies layer by layer, with each subsequent layer conditioned on the previously generated structure. During each layer generation, MorphGrower utilizes a pair of sibling branches as the basic generation block and generates branch pairs synchronously. This approach ensures topological validity and allows for fine-grained generation, thereby enhancing the realism of the final generated morphologies. Results on four real-world datasets demonstrate that MorphGrower outperforms MorphVAE by a notable margin. Importantly, the electrophysiological response simulation demonstrates the plausibility of our generated samples from a neuroscience perspective. 2024 Efficient and Accurate Semi-Automatic Neuron Tracing with Extended Reality
abstract
Neuron tracing, alternately referred to as neuron reconstruction, is the procedure for extracting the digital representation of the three-dimensional neuronal morphology from stacks of microscopic images. Achieving accurate neuron tracing is critical for profiling the neuroanatomical structure at single-cell level and analyzing the neuronal circuits and projections at whole-brain scale. However, the process often demands substantial human involvement and represents a nontrivial task. Conventional solutions towards neuron tracing often contend with challenges such as non-intuitive user interactions, suboptimal data generation throughput, and ambiguous visualization. In this paper, we introduce a novel method that leverages the power of extended reality (XR) for intuitive and progressive semi-automatic neuron tracing in real time. In our method, we have defined a set of interactors for controllable and efficient interactions for neuron tracing in an immersive environment. We have also developed a GPU-accelerated automatic tracing algorithm that can generate updated neuron reconstruction in real time. In addition, we have built a visualizer for fast and improved visual experience, particularly when working with both volumetric images and 3D objects. Our method has been successfully implemented with one virtual reality (VR) headset and one augmented reality (AR) headset with satisfying results achieved. We also conducted two user studies and proved the effectiveness of the interactors and the efficiency of our method in comparison with other approaches for neuron tracing.

2021 A K-Band Fractional-N PLL with Low-Spur Low-Power Linearization Circuit and PVT Robust Spur Trapper
abstract
In this paper, we propose a fractional-N PLL with charge pump linearization circuit to mitigate quantization noise fold-in and reference spur deterioration issues simultaneously. This linearization circuit with a novel clock gating technique can suppress the fold-in quantization noise to -110 dBc/Hz, without degrading the reference spur or incurring additional digital algorithm, and the power consumption is negligible, while prior arts either cause large reference spur due to strong instantaneous current mismatch or consume too much power. A process robust cascaded spur trapper is also proposed to guarantee at least an extra 20 dB attenuation of reference spur.
