2025 Audio-Visual Instance Segmentation
abstract
In this paper, we propose a new multi-modal task, termed audio-visual instance segmentation (AVIS), which aims to simultaneously identify, segment and track individual sounding object instances in audible videos. To facilitate this research, we introduce a high-quality benchmark named AVISeg, containing over 90K instance masks from 26 semantic categories in 926 long videos. Additionally, we propose a strong baseline model for this task. Our model first localizes sound source within each frame, and condenses object-specific contexts into concise tokens. Then it builds long-range audio-visual dependencies between these tokens using window-based attention, and tracks sounding objects among the entire video sequences. Extensive experiments reveal that our method performs best on AVISeg, surpassing the existing methods from related tasks. We further conduct the evaluation on several multi-modal large models. Unfortunately, they exhibits subpar performance on instance-level sound source localization and temporal perception. We expect that AVIS will inspire the community towards a more comprehensive multi-modal understanding. Dataset and code is available at https://github.com/ruohaoguo/avis.

2025 TokenFlow: Unified Image Tokenizer for Multimodal Understanding and Generation
abstract
We present TokenFlow, a novel unified image tokenizer that bridges the long-standing gap between multimodal understanding and generation. Prior research attempt to employ a single reconstruction-targeted Vector Quantization (VQ) encoder for unifying these two tasks. We observe that understanding and generation require fundamentally different granularities of visual information. This leads to a critical trade-off, particularly compromising performance in multimodal understanding tasks. TokenFlow addresses this challenge through an innovative dual-codebook architecture that decouples semantic and pixel-level feature learning while maintaining their alignment via a shared mapping mechanism. This design enables direct access to both high-level semantic representations crucial for understanding tasks and fine-grained visual features essential for generation through shared indices. Our extensive experiments demonstrate TokenFlow’s superiority across multiple dimensions. Leveraging TokenFlow, we demonstrate for the first time that discrete visual input can surpass LLaVA-1.5 13B in understanding performance, achieving a 7.2% average improvement. For image reconstruction, we achieve a strong FID score of 0.63 at 384×384 resolution. Moreover, TokenFlow establishes state-of-the-art performance in autoregressive image generation with a GenEval score of 0.55 at 256×256 resolution, achieving comparable results to SDXL. Our code and models are released at https://github.com/ByteFlow-Ai/TokenFlow.

2024 AvatarVerse: High-Quality & Stable 3D Avatar Creation from Text and Pose
abstract
Creating expressive, diverse and high-quality 3D avatars from highly customized text descriptions and pose guidance is a challenging task, due to the intricacy of modeling and texturing in 3D that ensure details and various styles (realistic, fictional, etc). We present AvatarVerse, a stable pipeline for generating expressive high-quality 3D avatars from nothing but text descriptions and pose guidance. In specific, we introduce a 2D diffusion model conditioned on DensePose signal to establish 3D pose control of avatars through 2D images, which enhances view consistency from partially observed scenarios. It addresses the infamous Janus Problem and significantly stablizes the generation process. Moreover, we propose a progressive high-resolution 3D synthesis strategy, which obtains substantial improvement over the quality of the created 3D avatars. To this end, the proposed AvatarVerse pipeline achieves zero-shot 3D modeling of 3D avatars that are not only more expressive, but also in higher quality and fidelity than previous works. Rigorous qualitative evaluations and user studies showcase AvatarVerse's superiority in synthesizing high-fidelity 3D avatars, leading to a new standard in high-quality and stable 3D avatar creation. 2024 Instance-Level Panoramic Audio-Visual Saliency Detection and Ranking
abstract
Panoramic audio-visual saliency detection is to segment the most attention-attractive regions in 360° panoramic videos with sound. To meticulously delineate the detected salient regions and effectively model human attention shift, we extend this task to more fine-grained instance scenarios: identifying salient object instances and inferring their saliency ranks. In this paper, we propose the first instance-level framework that can simultaneously be applied to segmentation and ranking of multiple salient objects in panoramic videos. Specifically, it consists of a distortion-aware pixel decoder to overcome panoramic distortions, a sequential audio-visual fusion module to integrate audio-visual information, and a spatio-temporal object decoder to separate individual instances and predict their saliency scores. Moreover, owing to the absence of such annotations, we create the ground-truth saliency ranks for the PAVS10K benchmark. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model is capable of achieving state-of-the-art performance on the PAVS10K for both saliency detection and ranking tasks. 2024 Open-Vocabulary Audio-Visual Semantic Segmentation
abstract
Audio-visual semantic segmentation (AVSS) aims to segment and classify sounding objects in videos with acoustic cues. However, most approaches operate on the close-set assumption and only identify pre-defined categories from training data, lacking the generalization ability to detect novel categories in practical applications. In this paper, we introduce a new task: open-vocabulary audio-visual semantic segmentation, extending AVSS task to open-world scenarios beyond the annotated label space. This is a more challenging task that requires recognizing all categories, even those that have never been seen nor heard during training. Moreover, we propose the first open-vocabulary AVSS framework, OV-AVSS, which mainly consists of two parts: 1) a universal sound source localization module to perform audio-visual fusion and locate all potential sounding objects and 2) an open-vocabulary classification module to predict categories with the help of the prior knowledge from large-scale pre-trained vision-language models. To properly evaluate the open-vocabulary AVSS, we split zero-shot training and testing subsets based on the AVSBench-semantic benchmark, namely AVSBench-OV. Extensive experiments demonstrate the strong segmentation and zero-shot generalization ability of our model on all categories. On the AVSBench-OV dataset, OV-AVSS achieves 55.43% mIoU on base categories and 29.14% mIoU on novel categories, exceeding the state-of-the-art zero-shot method by 41.88%/20.61% and open-vocabulary method by 10.2%/11.6%. The code is available at https://github.com/ruohaoguo/ovavss.

2024 Metric from Human: Zero-shot Monocular Metric Depth Estimation via Test-time Adaptation
abstract
Monocular depth estimation (MDE) is fundamental for deriving 3D scene structures from 2D images. While state-of-the-art monocular relative depth estimation (MRDE) excels in estimating relative depths for in-the-wild images, current monocular metric depth estimation (MMDE) approaches still face challenges in handling unseen scenes. Since MMDE can be viewed as the composition of MRDE and metric scale recovery, we attribute this difficulty to scene dependency, where MMDE models rely on scenes observed during supervised training for predicting scene scales during inference. To address this issue, we propose to use humans as landmarks for distilling scene-independent metric scale priors from generative painting models. Our approach, Metric from Human (MfH), bridges from generalizable MRDE to zero-shot MMDE in a generate-and-estimate manner. Specifically, MfH generates humans on the input image with generative painting and estimates human dimensions with an off-the-shelf human mesh recovery (HMR) model. Based on MRDE predictions, it propagates the metric information from painted humans to the contexts, resulting in metric depth estimations for the original input. Through this annotation-free test-time adaptation, MfH achieves superior zero-shot performance in MMDE, demonstrating its strong generalization ability.

2024 UniTR: A Unified TRansformer-Based Framework for Co-Object and Multi-Modal Saliency Detection
abstract
Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in co-object segmentation and multi-modal salient object detection. Many efforts are devoted to segmenting co-existed objects among a group of images or detecting salient objects from different modalities. Albeit the appreciable performance achieved on respective benchmarks, each of these methods is limited to a specific task and cannot be generalized to other tasks. In this paper, we develop aUnifiedTRansformer-based framework, namelyUniTR, aiming at tackling the above tasks individually with a unified architecture. Specifically, a transformer module (CoFormer) is introduced to learn the consistency of relevant objects or complementarity from different modalities. To generate high-quality segmentation maps, we adopt a dual-stream decoding paradigm that allows the extracted consistent or complementary information to better guide mask prediction. Moreover, a feature fusion module (ZoomFormer) is designed to enhance backbone features and capture multi-granularity and multi-semantic information. Extensive experiments show that our UniTR performs well on17benchmarks, and surpasses existing state-of-the-art approaches.

2022 Channel Estimation Protocol for Bistatic Backscattering using Multiantenna Transceiver
abstract
Backscatter communication (BSC) has the potential to realise the ubiquitous proliferation of internet-of-things (IoT) technology. Bistatic BSC offers greater scalability and range over conventional BSC, making it a competent contender for its implementation in the IoT. We propose a robust, novel two-phase channel estimation (CE) protocol for bistatic BSC, which involves finding the required channel estimates at the multiantenna emitter and multiantenna reader and the appropriate pilot signal designs for each phase. We derived closed-form expressions for the emitter-to-tag channel estimate at the emitter and the tag-to-reader channel estimate at the reader without prior knowledge of channel and noise statistics. After that, we explore the utility of the proposed assessments by using them for transceiver (emitter-reader) design at the emitter and reader. Specifically, an optimal design maximising the reader signal-to-noise (SNR) is investigated. Finally, extensive numerical simulations verify the accuracy and utility of the proposed estimates.

2021 SOTR: Segmenting Objects with Transformers
abstract
Most recent transformer-based models show impressive performance on vision tasks, even better than Convolution Neural Networks (CNN). In this work, we present a novel, flexible, and effective transformer-based model for high-quality instance segmentation. The proposed method, Segmenting Objects with TRansformers (SOTR), simplifies the segmentation pipeline, building on an alternative CNN backbone appended with two parallel subtasks: (1) predicting per-instance category via transformer and (2) dynamically generating segmentation mask with the multi-level upsampling module. SOTR can effectively extract lower-level feature representations and capture long-range context dependencies by Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) and twin transformer, respectively. Meanwhile, compared with the original transformer, the proposed twin transformer is time- and resource-efficient since only a row and a column attention are involved to encode pixels. Moreover, SOTR is easy to be incorporated with various CNN backbones and transformer model variants to make considerable improvements for the segmentation accuracy and training convergence. Extensive experiments show that our SOTR performs well on the MS COCO dataset and surpasses state-of-the-art instance segmentation approaches. We hope our simple but strong framework could serve as a preferment baseline for instance-level recognition. Our code is available at https://github.com/easton-cau/SOTR.
