2009 Study on Huber Fractal Image Compression
abstract
In this paper, a new similarity measure for fractal image compression (FIC) is introduced. In the proposed Huber fractal image compression (HFIC), the linear Huber regression technique from robust statistics is embedded into the encoding procedure of the fractal image compression. When the original image is corrupted by noises, we argue that the fractal image compression scheme should be insensitive to those noises presented in the corrupted image. This leads to a new concept of robust fractal image compression. The proposed HFIC is one of our attempts toward the design of robust fractal image compression. The main disadvantage of HFIC is the high computational cost. To overcome this drawback, particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is utilized to reduce the searching time. Simulation results show that the proposed HFIC is robust against outliers in the image. Also, the PSO method can effectively reduce the encoding time while retaining the quality of the retrieved image.

2006 Active Contour Model Based on Multi-Population Particle Swarm Optimization
abstract
In this paper, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is utilized to enhance the concavity searching for the control points of Active Contour Model (ACM). In the traditional methods for ACM, the best candidates are searched in a small window. Consequently, the boundary concavities cannot be searched accurately. Some improvements have been made in the past to enlarge the searching space, yet they are still time-consuming. To overcome these drawbacks, a multi-population particle swarm optimization technique is adopted in this paper to reduce the search time but in a larger searching window. This optimizer inherits the spirit of the original PSO as well as shares information among the swarms surrounding control points. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the search of object concavities without spending extra time.

2003 Burst synchronization of slotted random access with preamble power ramping in the reverse link of CDMA systems
abstract
Efficient random access is one of the key designs in code-division multiple-access (CDMA) cellular systems. Random access is used by user equipment for initial access, requesting dedicated channels and transmitting short packet data to a base station. In random access, a preamble part is usually devised for fast and reliable burst synchronization, which is essential in order to avoid excessive access delay and/or repeated transmissions that may reduce the overall system capacity. This paper investigates the issue of burst synchronization for the slotted random access with preamble power ramping in the reverse link of CDMA systems. A flexible burst synchronizer based on a parallel-serial code-phase detector is proposed, which can be easily configured to achieve different complexity/performance tradeoffs. A general analysis is also presented with important design parameters being taken into account, including the number of correlators, power control error, power ramping step, diversity order, frequency offset, multipath combining, and others. The analysis is verified by computer simulations.

2000 Multiple-dwell and sequential code acquisition with diversity for FFH/MFSK spread-spectrum systems under band multitone jamming
abstract
Pseudonoise code acquisition is investigated for constant hopping rate fast frequency-hopped (FFH)/M-ary frequency-shift keying systems under the effects of white Gaussian noise and band multitone jamming. In particular, serial search acquisition systems based on the traditional multiple-dwell test (up to three dwells) and three novel sequential tests are analyzed and compared. Analytical results show the following in a heavily jammed environment: (1) the inherent time diversity in an FFH system can significantly improve the acquisition performance of the multiple-dwell test and (2) the novel sequential tests can significantly outperform the multiple-dwell test. Our analytical results are verified by computer simulations.

1999 Variable dwell-time code acquisition for FFH/MFSK spread spectrum systems under band multitone jamming and white Gaussian noise
abstract
Variable dwell-time code acquisition based on multiple-dwell and novel sequential tests is investigated for fast frequency hopped MFSK systems under the effects of white Gaussian noise and band multitone jamming. 1- and 2-dwell tests are of particularly interest for the multiple-dwell tests for practical consideration. Numerical results show that (i) diversity with fast frequency hopping can significantly improve the acquisition performance for 1- and 2-dwell tests, especially in a heavily jammed environment, and (ii) the proposed novel sequential tests significantly outperform 1- and 2-dwell tests and are quite robust to the effects of non-ideal jammer state information. Our analytical results are verified by computer simulations.
