2019 Joint Learning of Word and Label Embeddings for Sequence Labelling in Spoken Language Understanding
abstract
We propose an architecture to jointly learn word and label embeddings for slot filling in spoken language understanding. The proposed approach encodes labels using a combination of word embeddings and straightforward word-label association from the training data. Compared to the state-of-the-art methods, our approach does not require label embed-dings as part of the input and therefore lends itself nicely to a wide range of model architectures. In addition, our architecture computes contextual distances between words and labels to avoid adding contextual windows, thus reducing memory footprint. We validate the approach on established spoken dialogue datasets and show that it can achieve state-of-the-art performance with much fewer trainable parameters.

2018 Multi-Modal Robot Apprenticeship: Imitation Learning Using Linearly Decayed DMP+ in a Human-Robot Dialogue System
abstract
Robot learning by demonstration gives robots the ability to learn tasks which they have not been programmed to do before. The paradigm allows robots to work in a greater range of real-world applications in our daily life. However, this paradigm has traditionally been applied to learn tasks from a single demonstration modality. This restricts the approach to be scaled to learn and execute a series of tasks in a real-life environment. In this paper, we propose a multi-modal learning approach using DMP+ with linear decay integrated in a dialogue system with speech and ontology for the robot to learn seamlessly through natural interaction modalities (like an apprentice) while learning or re-learning is done on the fly to allow partial updates to a learned task to reduce potential user fatigue and operational downtime in teaching. The performance of new DMP+ with linear decay system is statistically benchmarked against state-of-the-art DMP implementations. A gluing demonstration is also conducted to show how the system provides seamless learning of multiple tasks in a flexible manufacturing set-up.

abstract
We present our preliminary work on a multimodal control architecture that enables an operator to manage an autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) through high level tasks in an indoors environment. The intelligence embedded in our architecture is able to decode these tasks into low level instructions that a UAV is able to execute. Our system allows the user to operate the UAV through speech, text or keyboard/mouse input, all presented in a web based graphical user interface that can be accessed from any Internet powered device.

2016 A Web-based Platform for Collection of Human-Chatbot Interactions
abstract
Over recent years, the world has seen multiple uses for conversational agents. Chatbots has been implemented into ecommerce systems, such as Amazon Echo's Alexa [1]. Businesses and organizations like Facebook are also implementing bots into their applications. While a number of amazing chatbot platform exists, there are still difficulties in creating data-driven-systems as they large amount of data is needed for development and training. This paper we describe an advanced platform for evaluating and annotating human-chatbot interactions, its main features and goals, as well as the future plans we have for it.

2016 The fifth dialog state tracking challenge
abstract
Dialog state tracking - the process of updating the dialog state after each interaction with the user - is a key component of most dialog systems. Following a similar scheme to the fourth dialog state tracking challenge, this edition again focused on human-human dialogs, but introduced the task of cross-lingual adaptation of trackers. The challenge received a total of 32 entries from 9 research groups. In addition, several pilot track evaluations were also proposed receiving a total of 16 entries from 4 groups. In both cases, the results show that most of the groups were able to outperform the provided baselines for each task.

2015 Automatic fill-the-blank question generator for student self-assessment
abstract
Today's educational systems require students to recall and apply major concepts from study material to perform competently in assessments. Crucial to achieving this is practice and self-assessment through questions. The crafting of such questions can be time consuming for teachers while questions from external sources, e.g. assessment books, might not be tailored to suit students' study materials. As such, we present RevUP: an automated system for Gap-Fill Question Generation (GFQG) from educational texts. Example GFQs generated by RevUP from a high-school biology textbook are as follows. · Endocrine signals generated by the hypothalamus regulate hormone secretion by the _____. (a) posterior pituitary (b) anterior pituitary (c) thyroid gland (d) pineal gland Our system factors the problem of generating good questions into 3 parts: 1) Selecting topically important sentences to ask about 2) Identifying which part of the resulting sentence to choose as the gap 3) Crafting effective distractors to be part of the set of options to confuse the learner The immediate advantage of this service is that it provides the tools that make it easy for teachers to quickly generate and edit questions for pop quizzes and worksheets from their lecture notes. In the paper, we will provide a detailed description of the methodology used to generate questions. We will also provide preliminary usability statistics from high school students where they qualified the usability and the negative aspects of the application.

2015 Adequacy-Fluency Metrics: Evaluating MT in the Continuous Space Model Framework
abstract
This work extends and evaluates a two-dimensional automatic evaluation metric for machine translation, which is designed to operate at the sentence level. The metric is based on the concepts of adequacy and fluency, aiming at decoupling both semantic and syntactic components of the translation process to provide a more balanced view on translation quality. These two elements are independently evaluated by using continuous space and$n$-gram language modeling frameworks, respectively. Two different implementations are evaluated: a monolingual version that fully operates on the target language side, and a cross-language version that has the main advantage of not requiring reference translations. Both implementations are evaluated by comparing their performance with state-of-the-art automatic metrics over a dataset involving five different European languages.

2015 Decoupling Word-Pair Distance and Co-occurrence Information for Effective Long History Context Language Modeling
abstract
In this paper, we propose the use of distance and co-occurrence information of word-pairs to improve language modeling. We have empirically shown that, for history-context sizes of up to ten words, the extracted information about distance and co-occurrence complements the n-gram language model well, for which learning long-history contexts is inherently difficult. Evaluated on the Wall Street Journal and the Switchboard corpora, our proposed model reduces the trigram model perplexity by up to 11.2% and 6.5%, respectively. As compared to the distant bigram model and the trigger model, our proposed model offers a more effective manner of capturing far context information, as verified in terms of perplexity and computational efficiency, i.e., fewer free parameters to be fine-tuned. Experiments using the proposed model for speech recognition, text classification and word prediction tasks showed improved performance.

2014 Improving language modeling by using distance and co-occurrence information of word-pairs and its application to LVCSR
abstract
This paper reports our study in exploiting the distance and co-occurrence information of word-pairs to improve the n-gram language model. We used these two types of information for modeling the distant context, up to history length of ten. Also we show that the proposed model provides complementary information about the n-gram's context that is unable to be captured by the n-gram model due to data scarcity. Evaluated on the WSJ and SWB-1 corpora, the proposed model reduced the trigram perplexity up to 11.2% and 6.5% respectively. In an N-best re-ranking task of the Aurora-4 database, our model aided a hexagram model to perform ~9% relatively better in terms of WER.

2014 Query expansion for mixed-script information retrieval
abstract
For many languages that use non-Roman based indigenous scripts (e.g., Arabic, Greek and Indic languages) one can often find a large amount of user generated transliterated content on the Web in the Roman script. Such content creates a monolingual or multi-lingual space with more than one script which we refer to as the Mixed-Script space. IR in the mixed-script space is challenging because queries written in either the native or the Roman script need to be matched to the documents written in both the scripts. Moreover, transliterated content features extensive spelling variations. In this paper, we formally introduce the concept of Mixed-Script IR, and through analysis of the query logs of Bing search engine, estimate the prevalence and thereby establish the importance of this problem. We also give a principled solution to handle the mixed-script term matching and spelling variation where the terms across the scripts are modelled jointly in a deep-learning architecture and can be compared in a low-dimensional abstract space. We present an extensive empirical analysis of the proposed method along with the evaluation results in an ad-hoc retrieval setting of mixed-script IR where the proposed method achieves significantly better results (12% increase in MRR and 29% increase in MAP) compared to other state-of-the-art baselines.

2012 Evaluating Indirect Strategies for Chinese-Spanish Statistical Machine Translation
abstract
Although, Chinese and Spanish are two of the most spoken languages in the world, not much research has been done in machine translation for this language pair. This paper focuses on investigating the state-of-the-art of Chinese-to-Spanish statistical machine translation (SMT), which nowadays is one of the most popular approaches to machine translation. For this purpose, we report details of the available parallel corpus which are Basic Traveller Expressions Corpus (BTEC), Holy Bible and United Nations (UN). Additionally, we conduct experimental work with the largest of these three corpora to explore alternative SMT strategies by means of using a pivot language. Three alternatives are considered for pivoting: cascading, pseudo-corpus and triangulation. As pivot language, we use either English, Arabic or French. Results show that, for a phrase-based SMT system, English is the best pivot language between Chinese and Spanish. We propose a system output combination using the pivot strategies which is capable of outperforming the direct translation strategy. The main objective of this work is motivating and involving the research community to work in this important pair of languages given their demographic impact.

2011 Deriving translation units using small additional corpora
abstract
We present a novel strategy to derive new translation units using an additional bilingual corpus and a previously trained SMT system. The units were used to adapt the SMT system. The derivation process can be applied when the additional corpus is very small compared with the original train corpus and it does not require to compute new word alignments using all corpora. The strategy is based in the Levenshtein Distance and its resulting path. We reported a statistically significant improvement, with a confidence level of 99%, when adapting an Ngram-based Catalan-Spanish system using an additional corpus that represents less than 0.5% of the original train corpus. The additional translation units were able to solve morphological and lexical errors and added previously unknown words to the vocabulary.

2008 System Combination for Machine Translation of Spoken and Written Language
abstract
This paper describes an approach for computing a consensus translation from the outputs of multiple machine translation (MT) systems. The consensus translation is computed by weighted majority voting on a confusion network, similarly to the well-established ROVER approach of Fiscus for combining speech recognition hypotheses. To create the confusion network, pairwise word alignments of the original MT hypotheses are learned using an enhanced statistical alignment algorithm that explicitly models word reordering. The context of a whole corpus of automatic translations rather than a single sentence is taken into account in order to achieve high alignment quality. The confusion network is rescored with a special language model, and the consensus translation is extracted as the best path. The proposed system combination approach was evaluated in the framework of the TC-STAR speech translation project. Up to six state-of-the-art statistical phrase-based translation systems from different project partners were combined in the experiments. Significant improvements in translation quality from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish in comparison with the best of the individual MT systems were achieved under official evaluation conditions.

2006 Machine Translation System Development Based on Human Likeness
abstract
We present a novel approach for parameter adjustment in empirical machine translation systems. Instead of relying on a single evaluation metric, or in an ad-hoc linear combination of metrics, our method works over metric combinations with maximum descriptive power, aiming to maximise the Human Likeness of the automatic translations. We apply it to the problem of optimising decoding stage parameters of a state- of-the-art Statistical machine translation system. By means of a rigorous manual evaluation, we show how our methodology provides more reliable and robust system configurations than a tuning strategy based on the BLEU metric alone.
