2024 PolMERLIN: Self-Supervised Polarimetric Complex SAR Image Despeckling With Masked Networks
abstract
Despeckling is a crucial noise reduction task in improving the quality of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Directly obtaining noise-free SAR images is a challenging task that has hindered the development of accurate despeckling algorithms. The advent of deep learning has facilitated the study of denoising models that learn from only noisy SAR images. However, existing methods deal solely with single-polarization images and cannot handle the multipolarization images captured by modern satellites. In this work, we present an extension of the existing model for generating single-polarization SAR images to handle multipolarization SAR images. Specifically, we propose a novel self-supervised despeckling approach called channel masking, which exploits the relationship between polarizations. Additionally, we utilize a spatial masking method that addresses pixel-to-pixel correlations to further enhance the performance of our approach. By effectively incorporating multiple polarization information, our method surpasses current state-of-the-art methods in quantitative evaluation in both synthetic and real-world scenarios.

2020 Learning Structured Latent Factors from Dependent Data:A Generative Model Framework from Information-Theoretic Perspective
abstract
Learning controllable and generalizable representation of multivariate data with desired structural properties remains a fundamental problem in machine learning. In this paper, we present a novel framework for learning generative models with various underlying structures in the latent space. Learning controllable and generalizable representation of multivariate data with desired structural properties remains a fundamental problem in machine learning. In this paper, we present a novel framework for learning generative models with various underlying structures in the latent space. We represent the inductive bias in the form of mask variables to model the dependency structure in the graphical model and extend the theory of multivariate information bottleneck (Friedman et al., 2001) to enforce it. Our model provides a principled approach to learn a set of semantically meaningful latent factors that reflect various types of desired structures like capturing correlation or encoding invariance, while also offering the flexibility to automatically estimate the dependency structure from data. We show that our framework unifies many existing generative models and can be applied to a variety of tasks, including multimodal data modeling, algorithmic fairness, and out-of-distribution generalization.

2016 Infinite Plaid Models for Infinite Bi-Clustering
abstract
We propose a probabilistic model for non-exhaustive and overlapping (NEO) bi-clustering. Our goal is to extract a few sub-matrices from the given data matrix, where entries of a sub-matrix are characterized by a specific distribution or parameters. Existing NEO biclustering methods typically require the number of sub-matrices to be extracted, which is essentially difficult to fix a priori. In this paper, we extend the plaid model, known as one of the best NEO bi-clustering algorithms, to allow infinite bi-clustering; NEO bi-clustering without specifying the number of sub-matrices. Our model can represent infinite sub-matrices formally. We develop a MCMC inference without the finite truncation, which potentially addresses all possible numbers of sub-matrices. Experiments quantitatively and qualitatively verify the usefulness of the proposed model. The results reveal that our model can offer more precise and in-depth analysis of sub-matrices.

2014 Rectangular Tiling Process
abstract
This paper proposes a novel stochastic process that represents the arbitrary rectangular partitioning of an infinite-dimensional matrix as the conditional projective limit. Rectangular partitioning is used in relational data analysis, and is classified into three types: regular grid, hierarchical, and arbitrary. Conventionally, a variety of probabilistic models have been advanced for the first two, including the product of Chinese restaurant processes and the Mondrian process. However, existing models for arbitrary partitioning are too complicated to permit the analysis of the statistical behaviors of models, which places very severe capability limits on relational data analysis. In this paper, we propose a new probabilistic model of arbitrary partitioning called the rectangular tiling process (RTP). Our model has a sound mathematical base in projective systems and infinite extension of conditional probabilities, and is capable of representing partitions of infinite elements as found in ordinary Bayesian nonparametric models.

2014 Bayesian Nonparametrics for Microphone Array Processing
abstract
Sound source localization and separation from a mixture of sounds are essential functions for computational auditory scene analysis. The main challenges are designing a unified framework for joint optimization and estimating the sound sources under auditory uncertainties such as reverberation or unknown number of sounds. Since sound source localization and separation are mutually dependent, their simultaneous estimation is required for better and more robust performance. A unified model is presented for sound source localization and separation based on Bayesian nonparametrics. Experiments using simulated and recorded audio mixtures show that a method based on this model achieves state-of-the-art sound source separation quality and has more robust performance on the source number estimation under reverberant environments.

2014 Multichannel sound source dereverberation and separation for arbitrary number of sources based on Bayesian nonparametrics
abstract
Multichannel signal processing using a microphone array provides fundamental functions for coping with multi-source situations, such as sound source localization and separation, that are needed to extract the auditory information for each source. Auditory uncertainties about the degree of reverberation and the number of sources are known to degrade performance or limit the practical application of microphone array processing. Such uncertainties must therefore be overcome to realize general and robust microphone array processing. These uncertainty issues have been partly addressed-existing methods focus on either source number uncertainty or the reverberation issue, where joint separation and dereverberation has been achieved only for the overdetermined conditions. This paper presents an all-round method that achieves source separation and dereverberation for an arbitrary number of sources including underdetermined conditions. Our method uses Bayesian nonparametrics that realize an infinitely extensible modeling flexibility so as to bypass the model selection in the separation and dereverberation problem, which is caused by the source number uncertainty. Evaluation using a dereverberation and separation task with various numbers of sources including underdetermined conditions demonstrates that (1) our method is applicable to the separation and dereverberation of underdetermined mixtures, and that (2) the source extraction performance is comparable to that of a state-of-the-art method suitable only for overdetermined conditions.

2013 Non-negative Multiple Tensor Factorization
abstract
Non-negative Tensor Factorization (NTF) is a widely used technique for decomposing a non-negative value tensor into sparse and reasonably interpretable factors. However, NTF performs poorly when the tensor is extremely sparse, which is often the case with real-world data and higher-order tensors. In this paper, we propose Non-negative Multiple Tensor Factorization (NMTF), which factorizes the target tensor and auxiliary tensors simultaneously. Auxiliary data tensors compensate for the sparseness of the target data tensor. The factors of the auxiliary tensors also allow us to examine the target data from several different aspects. We experimentally confirm that NMTF performs better than NTF in terms of reconstructing the given data. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed NMTF can successfully extract spatio-temporal patterns of people's daily life such as leisure, drinking, and shopping activity by analyzing several tensors extracted from online review data sets.

2013 Image context discovery from socially curated contents
abstract
This paper proposes a novel method of discovering a set of image contents sharing a specific context (attributes or implicit meaning) with the help of image collections obtained from social curation platforms. Socially curated contents are promising to analyze various kinds of multimedia information, since they are manually filtered and organized based on specific individual preferences, interests or perspectives. Our proposed method fully exploits the process of social curation: (1) How image contents are manually grouped together by users, and (2) how image contents are distributed in the platform. Our method reveals the fact that image contents with a specific context are naturally grouped together and every image content includes really various contexts that cannot necessarily be verbalized by texts.% A preliminary experiment with a small collection of a million of images yields a promising result.

2012 Bayesian Unification of Sound Source Localization and Separation with Permutation Resolution
abstract
Sound source localization and separation with permutation resolution are essential for achieving a computational auditory scene analysis system that can extract useful information from a mixture of various sounds. Because existing methods cope separately with these problems despite their mutual dependence, the overall result with these approaches can be degraded by any failure in one of these components. This paper presents a unified Bayesian framework to solve these problems simultaneously where localization and separation are regarded as a clustering problem. Experimental results confirm that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of the separation quality with various setups including practical reverberant environments.

2012 Towards Automatic Image Understanding and Mining via Social Curation
abstract
The amount and variety of multimedia data such as images, movies and music available on over social networks are increasing rapidly. However, the ability to analyze and exploit these unorganized multimedia data remains inadequate, even with state-of-the-art media processing techniques. Our finding in this paper is that the emerging social curation service is a promising information source for the automatic understanding and mining of images distributed and exchanged via social media. One remarkable virtue of social curation service datasets is that they are weakly supervised: the content in the service is manually collected, selected and maintained by users. This is very different from other social information sources, and we can utilize this characteristics for media content mining without expensive media processing techniques. In this paper we present a machine learning system for predicting view counts of images in social curation data as the first step to automatic image content evaluation. Our experiments confirm that the simple features extracted from a social curation corpus are much superior in terms of count prediction than the gold-standard image features of computer vision research.

2012 Unified auditory functions based on Bayesian topic model
abstract
Existing auditory functions for robots such as sound source localization and separation have been implemented in a cascaded framework whose overall performance may be degraded by any failure in its subsystems. These approaches often require a careful and environment-dependent tuning for each subsystems to achieve better performance. This paper presents a unified framework for sound source localization and separation where the whole system is integrated as a Bayesian topic model. This method improves both localization and separation with a common configuration under various environments by iterative inference using Gibbs sampling. Experimental results from three environments of different reverberation times confirm that our method outperforms state-of-the-art sound source separation methods, especially in the reverberant environments, and shows localization performance comparable to that of the existing robot audition system.

2012 Probabilistic Speaker Diarization With Bag-of-Words Representations of Speaker Angle Information
abstract
Speaker diarization determines “who spoke when” from the recorded conversations of an unknown number of people. In general, we have no a priori information about the number, the locations, or even the characteristics of the speakers. Additionally, speakers' speech utterances vary dynamically because of turn-taking during the conversations. These conditions make the speaker-clustering task extremely difficult. The problem becomes even harder if online (incremental) processing is required. In this paper, we formulate the speaker-clustering problem as the clustering of the sequential audio features generated by an unknown number of latent mixture components (speakers). We employ a probabilistic model that assumes time-sensitive speaker mixtures at every time frame, which, surprisingly, suits the diarization scenario. We combine the time-varying probabilistic model with direction of arrival (DOA) information calculated from a microphone array in a bag-of-words (BoW)-style feature representation. The proposed system effectively estimates the number and locations of the speakers in an online manner based on the standard Bayes inference scheme. Experiments confirm that the proposed model can successfully infer the number and features of speakers and yield better or comparable speaker diarization results compared with conventional methods in several datasets.

2010 Multi-class Boosting for Early Classification of Sequences
abstract
Consider the problem of driver behavior recognition from images captured by a camera installed in a vehicle [4]. Recognition of driver behavior is crucial for driver assistance systems that make driving comfortable and safe. One notable requirement for real applicatioins is that we would like to predict and classify a behavior as quickly as possible: if we detect a sign of dangerous movements such as mobile phone use while driving, we would like to warn the driver quickly before the behavior causes any accidents. This kind of classification task is called “early classification (recognition),” and is important for many practical problems including on-line handwritten character recognition, and speech recognition systems. In this paper, we focus one of the most famous discriminative models, i.e. Adaboost [1, 2], and extend it for early classification of sequences. While existing researches (e.g. [5, 6]) have studied only a binary classification problem, we present a multi-class extension of Adaboost for early classification, called Earlyboost.MH (Fig. 1). In this paper, we propose an efficient multi-class Adaboost for early classification by combining multi-class Adaboost.MH [3] and the early classification Boosting (Earlyboost [6]),

2010 SemiCCA: Efficient Semi-supervised Learning of Canonical Correlations
abstract
Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is a powerful tool for analyzing multi-dimensional paired data. However, CCA tends to perform poorly when the number of paired samples is limited, which is often the case in practice. To cope with this problem, we propose a semi-supervised variant of CCA named "Semi CCA" that allows us to incorporate additional unpaired samples for mitigating overfitting. The proposed method smoothly bridges the eigenvalue problems of CCA and principal component analysis (PCA), and thus its solution can be computed efficiently just by solving a single (generalized) eigenvalue problem as the original CCA. Preliminary experiments with artificially generated samples and PASCAL VOC data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2010 Dynamic Infinite Relational Model for Time-varying Relational Data Analysis
abstract
We propose a new probabilistic model for analyzing dynamic evolutions of relational data, such as additions, deletions and split & merge, of relation clusters like communities in social networks. Our proposed model abstracts observed time-varying object-object relationships into relationships between object clusters. We extend the infinite Hidden Markov model to follow dynamic and time-sensitive changes in the structure of the relational data and to estimate a number of clusters simultaneously. We show the usefulness of the model through experiments with synthetic and real-world data sets.

2008 Simultaneous clustering and tracking unknown number of objects
abstract
In this paper, we present a novel on-line probabilistic generative model that simultaneously deals with both the clustering and the tracking of an unknown number of moving objects. The proposed model assumes that i) time series data are composed of a time-varying number of objects and that ii) each object is governed by a mixture of an unknown number of different patterns of dynamics. The problem of learning patterns of dynamics is formulated as the clustering of tracked objects based on a nonparametric Bayesian model with conjugate priors, and this clustering in turn improves the tracking. We present a particle filter for posterior estimation of simultaneous clustering and tracking. Through experiments with synthetic and real movie data, we confirmed that the proposed model successfully learned the hidden cluster patterns and obtained better tracking results than conventional models without clustering.
