| 2025 | BoBa: Boosting Backdoor Detection Through Data Distribution Inference in Federated LearningabstractFederated learning, while being a promising approach for collaborative model training, is susceptible to backdoor attacks due to its decentralized nature. Backdoor attacks have shown remarkable stealthiness, as they compromise model predictions only when inputs contain specific triggers. As a countermeasure, anomaly detection is widely used to filter out backdoor attacks in FL. However, the non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data distribution nature of FL clients presents substantial challenges in backdoor attack detection, as the data variety introduces variance among benign models, making them indistinguishable from malicious ones. In this work, we propose a novel distribution-aware backdoor detection mechanism, BoBa, to address this problem. To differentiate outliers arising from data variety versus backdoor attacks, we propose to break down the problem into two steps: clustering clients utilizing their data distribution, and followed by a voting-based detection. We propose a novel data distribution inference mechanism for accurate data distribution estimation. To improve detection robustness, we introduce an overlapping clustering method, where each client is associated with multiple clusters, ensuring that the trustworthiness of a model update is assessed collectively by multiple clusters rather than a single cluster. Through extensive evaluations, we demonstrate that BoBa can reduce the attack success rate to lower than 0.001 while maintaining high main task accuracy across various attack strategies and experimental settings. | 2025 | A Transfer Attack to Image WatermarksabstractWatermark has been widely deployed by industry to detect AI-generated images. The robustness of such watermark-based detector against evasion attacks in the white-box and black-box settings is well understood in the literature. However, the robustness in the no-box setting is much less understood. In this work, we propose a new transfer evasion attack to image watermark in the no-box setting. Our transfer attack adds a perturbation to a watermarked image to evade multiple surrogate watermarking models trained by the attacker itself, and the perturbed watermarked image also evades the target watermarking model. Our major contribution is to show that, both theoretically and empirically, watermark-based AI-generated image detector based on existing watermarking methods is not robust to evasion attacks even if the attacker does not have access to the watermarking model nor the detection API. | 2024 | AudioMarkBench: Benchmarking Robustness of Audio WatermarkingabstractThe increasing realism of synthetic speech, driven by advancements in text-to-speech models, raises ethical concerns regarding impersonation and disinformation. Audio watermarking offers a promising solution via embedding human-imperceptible watermarks into AI-generated audios. However, the robustness of audio watermarking against common/adversarial perturbations remains understudied. We present AudioMarkBench, the first systematic benchmark for evaluating the robustness of audio watermarking against watermark removal and watermark forgery. AudioMarkBench includes a new dataset created from Common-Voice across languages, biological sexes, and ages, 3 state-of-the-art watermarking methods, and 15 types of perturbations. We benchmark the robustness of these methods against the perturbations in no-box, black-box, and white-box settings. Our findings highlight the vulnerabilities of current watermarking techniques and emphasize the need for more robust and fair audio watermarking solutions. | 2024 | Multiple-in-Single-Out Object Detector Leveraging Spiking Neural Membrane Systems and Multiple TransformersabstractMost existing multi-scale object detectors depend on multi-level feature maps. The Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN) is a significant architecture for object detection that utilizes these multi-level feature maps. However, the use of FPN also increases the detector's complexity. For object detection methods that only use a single-level feature map, the detection performance is limited to some extent because the single-level feature map cannot balance deep semantic information and shallow detail information. We introduce a novel detector - the Spiking Neural P Multiple-in-Single-out (SNPMiSo) detector to address these challenges. The SNPMiSo detector is constructed based on SNP-like neurons. In SNPMiSo, we employ two kinds of Transformers to boost the important features across different-level feature maps separately. After enhancing the features, we use an incremental upsampling module to upsample and merge the two feature maps. This combined feature map is input into the NAF dilated residual module and the NAF dual-branch detection head. This process allows us to extract multi-scale features and carry out detection tasks. Our tests show promising results: On the COCO dataset, SNPMiSo attains an Average Precision (AP) of 38.7, an improvement of 1.0 AP over YOLOF. In addition, SNPMiSo demonstrates a quicker detection speed, outperforming some advanced multi-level and single-level object detectors. | 2023 | Evading Watermark based Detection of AI-Generated ContentabstractA generative AI model can generate extremely realistic-looking content, posing growing challenges to the authenticity of information. To address the challenges, watermark has been leveraged to detect AI-generated content. Specifically, a watermark is embedded into an AI-generated content before it is released. A content is detected as AI-generated if a similar watermark can be decoded from it. In this work, we perform a systematic study on the robustness of such watermark-based AI-generated content detection. We focus on AI-generated images. Our work shows that an attacker can post-process a watermarked image via adding a small, human-imperceptible perturbation to it, such that the post-processed image evades detection while maintaining its visual quality. We show the effectiveness of our attack both theoretically and empirically. Moreover, to evade detection, our adversarial post-processing method adds much smaller perturbations to AI-generated images and thus better maintain their visual quality than existing popular post-processing methods such as JPEG compression, Gaussian blur, and Brightness/Contrast. Our work shows the insufficiency of existing watermark-based detection of AI-generated content, highlighting the urgent needs of new methods.
