2025 Domain Generalization using Large Pretrained Models with Mixture-of-Adapters
abstract
Learning robust vision models that perform well in out-of-distribution (OOD) situations is an important task for model deployment in real-world settings. Despite extensive research in this field, many proposed methods have only shown minor performance improvements compared to the simplest empirical risk minimization (ERM) approach, which was evaluated on a benchmark with a limited hy-perparameter search space. Our focus in this study is on leveraging the knowledge of large pretrained models to improve handling of OOD scenarios and tackle domain generalization problems. However, prior research has revealed that naively fine-tuning a large pretrained model can impair OOD robustness. Thus, we employ parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) techniques to effectively preserve OOD robustness while working with large models. Our extensive experiments and analysis confirm that the most effective approaches involve ensembling diverse models and increasing the scale of pretraining. As a result, we achieve state-of-the-art performance in domain generalization tasks. Our code and project page are available at: https://cvlab-kaist.github.io/MoA

2024 Analysis of Multi-Source Language Training in Cross-Lingual Transfer
abstract
The successful adaptation of multilingual language models (LMs) to a specific languagetask pair critically depends on the availability of data tailored for that condition. While cross-lingual transfer (XLT) methods have contributed to addressing this data scarcity problem, there still exists ongoing debate about the mechanisms behind their effectiveness. In this work, we focus on one of the promising assumptions about the inner workings of XLT, that it encourages multilingual LMs to place greater emphasis on language-agnostic or taskspecific features. We test this hypothesis by examining how the patterns of XLT change with a varying number of source languages involved in the process. Our experimental findings show that the use of multiple source languages in XLT-a technique we term Multi-Source Language Training (MSLT)-leads to increased mingling of embedding spaces for different languages, supporting the claim that XLT benefits from making use of language-independent information. On the other hand, we discover that using an arbitrary combination of source languages does not always guarantee better performance. We suggest simple heuristics for identifying effective language combinations for MSLT and empirically prove its effectiveness.

2022 Data Augmentation for Learning to Play in Text-Based Games
abstract
Improving generalization in text-based games serves as a useful stepping-stone towards reinforcement learning (RL) agents with generic linguistic ability. Data augmentation for generalization in RL has shown to be very successful in classic control and visual tasks, but there is no prior work for text-based games. We propose Transition-Matching Permutation, a novel data augmentation technique for text-based games, where we identify phrase permutations that match as many transitions in the trajectory data. We show that applying this technique results in state-of-the-art performance in the Cooking Game benchmark suite for text-based games.
