| 2026 | FractalCloud: A Fractal-Inspired Architecture for Efficient Large-Scale Point Cloud ProcessingabstractThree-dimensional (3D) point clouds are increasingly used in applications such as autonomous driving, robotics, and virtual reality (VR). Point-based neural networks (PNNs) have demonstrated strong performance in point cloud analysis, originally targeting small-scale inputs. However, as PNNs evolve to process large-scale point clouds with hundreds of thousands of points, all-to-all computation and global memory access in point cloud processing introduce substantial overhead, causing$O\left(n^{2}\right)$computational complexity and memory traffic where$n$is the number of points. Existing accelerators, primarily optimized for small-scale workloads, overlook this challenge and scale poorly due to inefficient partitioning and non-parallel architectures. To address these issues, we propose FractalCloud, a fractal-inspired hardware architecture for efficient large-scale 3D point cloud processing. FractalCloud introduces two key optimizations: (1) a co-designed Fractal method for shape-aware and hardware-friendly partitioning, and (2) block-parallel point operations that decompose and parallelize all point operations. A dedicated hardware design with on-chip fractal and flexible parallelism further enables fully parallel processing within limited memory resources. Implemented in 28 nm technology as a chip layout with a core area of$1.5 ~\text{mm}^{2}$, FractalCloud achieves$21.7 \times$speedup and$27 \times$energy reduction over state-of-the-art accelerators while maintaining network accuracy, demonstrating its scalability and efficiency for PNN inference. | 2026 | OASIS: Outlier-Aware LUT-Based GEMM with Dual-Side Quantization for LLM Inference AccelerationabstractLarge language models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities across a wide range of applications, but demand substantial memory and compute resources during inference. Existing quantization methods expose a trade-off between efficiency and accuracy: weight-only quantization (WOQ) incurs costly dequantization overheads, while integer weight-and-activation quantization (INT-WAQ) reduces precision and degrades model quality. Non-uniform weight-and-activation quantization (NU-WAQ) can better capture the non-uniform distributions of LLM weights and activations, yet remains incompatible with conventional low-precision compute units. This paper presents OASIS, a lookup table (LUT)-based architecture that enables efficient general matrix multiplication (GEMM) between non-uniformly quantized weights and activations without requiring dequantization. OASIS employs pre-computed Cartesian Product LUTs, achieving a 64x reduction in LUT size and enabling a 1024x higher computational parallelism over existing LUT-based GEMM methods. To preserve accuracy under aggressive activation quantization, OASIS introduces an outlier-aware quantization scheme with concurrent LUT-based GEMM and error compensation for outliers. Furthermore, we design Orizuru, an efficient top-k detection engine for real-time activation outlier identification. According to extensive evaluations, OASIS incurs an average accuracy drop of only 1.98% compared to the FP16 baseline, which is 5.18% lower than Atom. On the hardware side, OASIS achieves an average 3.00x speedup and a 1.44x energy efficiency improvement compared to the FIGLUT accelerator. | 2025 | SpeechPrune: Context-Aware Token Pruning for Speech Information RetrievalabstractWhile current Speech Large Language Models (Speech LLMs) excel at short-form tasks, they struggle with the computational and representational demands of longer audio clips. To advance the model’s capabilities with long-form speech, we introduce Speech Information Retrieval (SIR), a long-context task for Speech LLMs, and present SPIRAL, a 1,012-sample benchmark testing models’ ability to extract critical details from long spoken inputs. To overcome the challenges of processing long speech sequences, we propose SpeechPrune, a training-free token pruning strategy that uses speech-text similarity and approximated attention scores to efficiently discard irrelevant tokens. In SPIRAL, SpeechPrune achieves accuracy improvements of 29% and up to 47% over the original model and the random pruning model at a pruning rate of 20%, respectively. SpeechPrune can maintain network performance even at a pruning level of 80%. This highlights the potential of token-level pruning for efficient and scalable long-form speech understanding. | 2025 | Angles Don't Lie: Unlocking Training‑Efficient RL Through the Model's Own SignalsabstractCurrent Reinforcement Fine-tuning (RFT) paradigms for Large Language Models (LLMs) suffer from sample inefficiency due to the redundant exposure of identical queries under uniform data sampling. While previous work has explored curriculum learning via heuristic difficulty metrics, these strategies exhibit limitations by neglecting the intrinsic learning signals generated by the model itself, thus leading to suboptimal training regimes. In this paper, we identify a model-inherent signal termed *angle concentration* that effectively reflects an LLM's capacity to learn from specific data. We theoretically and empirically demonstrate a correlation between the angular distribution of token hidden state vectors and the resulting gradient, revealing a learning preference for data exhibiting higher angle concentration. Inspired by this finding, we propose GAIN-RL, a Gradient-driven Angle-Informed Navigated RL framework.
By leveraging the model's intrinsic angle concentration signal, GAIN-RL dynamically selects training data in each epoch, ensuring consistently impactful gradient updates and thus significantly enhancing overall training efficiency. Empirical evaluations show that GAIN-RL (GRPO) achieves over a 2.5$\times$ acceleration in training efficiency across diverse mathematical and coding tasks and varying model scales. Furthermore, GAIN-RL (GRPO)'s efficient sampling yields data-efficient training, achieving better performance with half the original data compared to vanilla GRPO with full training data. | 2025 | KVCOMM: Online Cross-context KV-cache Communication for Efficient LLM-based Multi-agent SystemsabstractMulti-agent large language model (LLM) systems are increasingly adopted for complex language processing tasks that require communication and coordination among agents. However, these systems often suffer substantial overhead from repeated reprocessing of overlapping contexts across agents. In typical pipelines, once an agent receives a message from its predecessor, the full context-including prior turns-must be reprocessed from scratch, leading to inefficient processing. While key-value (KV) caching is an effective solution for avoiding redundant computation in single-agent settings where prefixes remain unchanged, it cannot be directly reused in multi-agent scenarios due to diverging prefixes introduced by agent-specific context extensions. We identify that the core challenge lies in the offset variance of KV-caches across agents. To address this, we propose **KVCOMM**, a training-free framework that enables efficient prefilling in multi-agent inference by reusing KV-caches and aligning cache offsets of overlapping contexts under diverse prefix contexts. KVCOMM estimates and adjusts KV-caches for shared content by referencing a pool of cached examples—termed *anchors*—that store observed cache deviations under varying prefixes. The anchor pool is maintained and updated online, allowing dynamic adaptation to distinct user requests and context structures. KVCOMM achieves over 70% reuse rate across diverse multi- agent workloads, including retrieval-augmented generation, math reasoning, and collaborative coding tasks, all without quality degradation. Particularly, when each fully-connected agent receives 1K input tokens with 512 prefix tokens and 512 output tokens under a five-agent setting, KVCOMM achieves up to 7.8× speedup compared to the standard prefill pipeline, reducing TTFT from ∼430ms to ∼55ms. | 2024 | SoftAct: A High-Precision Softmax Architecture for Transformers Supporting Nonlinear FunctionsabstractTransformer-based deep learning networks are revolutionizing our society. The convolution and attention co-designed (CAC) Transformers have demonstrated superior performance compared to the conventional Transformer-based networks. However, CAC Transformer networks contain various nonlinear functions, such as softmax and complex activation functions, which require high precision hardware design yet typically with significant cost in area and power consumption. To address these challenges,SoftAct, a compact and high-precision algorithm-hardware co-designed architecture, is proposed to implement both softmax and nonlinear activation functions in CAC Transformer accelerators. An improved softmax algorithm with penalties is proposed to maintain precision in hardware. A stage-wise full zero detection method is developed to skip redundant computation in softmax. A compact and reconfigurable architecture with a symmetrically designed linear fitting module is proposed to achieve nonlinear functions. TheSoftActarchitecture is designed in an industrial 28-nm CMOS technology with the MobileViT-xxs network classifying the ImageNet-1k dataset as the benchmark. Compared with the state of the art,SoftActimproves up to 5.87% network accuracy under 8-bit quantization, 153.2× area efficiency, and 1435× overall efficiency. | 2023 | An Energy-Efficient 3D Point Cloud Neural Network Accelerator With Efficient Filter Pruning, MLP Fusion, and Dual-Stream SamplingabstractThree-dimensional (3D) point cloud has been employed in a wide range of applications recently. As a powerful weapon for point cloud analysis, point-based point cloud neural networks (PNNs) have demonstrated superior performance with less computation complexity and parameters, compared to sparse 3D convolution-based networks and graph-based convolutional neural networks. However, point-based PNNs still suffer from high computational redundancy, large off-chip memory access, and low parallelism in hardware implementation, thereby hindering the applications on edge devices. In this paper, to address these challenges, an energy-efficient 3D point cloud neural network accelerator is proposed for on-chip edge computing. An efficient filter pruning scheme is used to skip the redundant convolution of pruned filters and zero-value feature channels. A block-wise multi-layer perceptron (MLP) fusion method is proposed to increase the on-chip reuse of features, thereby reducing off-chip memory access. A dual-stream blocking technique is proposed for higher parallelism while maintaining inference accuracy. Implemented in an industrial 28-nm CMOS technology, the proposed accelerator achieves an effective energy efficiency of 12.65 TOPS/W and 0.13 mJ/frame energy consumption for PointNeXt-S at 100 MHz, 0.9 V supply voltage, and 8-bit data width. Compared to the state-of-the-art point cloud neural network accelerators, the proposed accelerator enhances the energy efficiency by up to 66.6× and reduces the energy consumption per frame by up to 70.2×. | 2023 | Sagitta: An Energy-Efficient Sparse 3D-CNN Accelerator for Real-Time 3-D UnderstandingabstractThree-dimensional (3-D) understanding or inference has received increasing attention, where 3-D convolutional neural networks (3D-CNNs) have demonstrated superior performance compared to 2D-CNNs, since 3D-CNNs learn features from all three dimensions. However, 3D-CNNs suffer from intensive computation and data movement. In this article, Sagitta, an energy-efficient low-latency on-chip 3D-CNN accelerator, is proposed for edge devices. Locality and small differential value dropout are leveraged to increase the sparsity of activations. A full-zero-skipping convolutional microarchitecture is proposed to fully utilize the sparsity of weights and activations. A hierarchical load-balancing scheme is also introduced to increase the hardware utilization. Specialized architecture and computation flow are proposed to enhance the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. Fabricated in a 55-nm CMOS technology, Sagitta achieves 3.8 TOPS/W for C3D at a latency of 0.1 s and 4.5 TOPS/W for 3D U-Net at a latency of 0.9 s at 100 MHz and 0.91-V supply voltage. Compared to the state-of-the-art 3D-CNN and 2D-CNN accelerators, Sagitta enhances the energy efficiency by up to$379.6\times $and$11\times $, respectively. | 2022 | A 4.29nJ/pixel Stereo Depth Coprocessor With Pixel Level Pipeline and Region Optimized Semi-Global Matching for IoT ApplicationabstractThe semi-global matching (SGM) algorithm in stereo vision is a well-known depth-estimation method since it can generate dense and robust disparity maps. However, the real-time processing and low power dissipation, the specifications of the Internet-of-Thing (IoT) applications, are challenging for their computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a hardware-oriented SGM algorithm with pixel-level pipeline and region-optimized cost aggregation for high-speed processing and low hardware-resource usage. Firstly, the matching costs in a region are integrated with an optimization strategy to significantly reduce memory usage and improve the processing speed of the cost aggregation. Then, a two-layer parallel two-stage pipeline (TPTP) architecture, which enables pixel-level processing, is designed to calculate two directions (0° and 135°) aggregation to further solve the crucial computational bottleneck of the SGM algorithm. Finally, the architecture is demonstrated on a low-cost XILINX Spartan-7 device and an advanced Stratix-V FPGA device for VGA ($640\times 480$) depth estimation. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture with compact hardware architecture also ensures accuracy. The pixel-level pipeline architecture enables a processing speed of 355 frames per second (fps) at 109MHz on the Spartan-7 FPGA device and 508 fps at 156MHz on the Stratix-V FPGA. Besides, the coprocessor respectively achieves an energy efficiency of 4.74 nJ/pixel with a power dissipation of 517mW and 4.29nJ/pixel with a power dissipation of 669mW on these two FPGAs.
