| 2026 | SIGN: Schema Induced Games for Naming (Student Abstract)abstractReal-world AI systems are tackling increasingly complex problems, often through interactions among Large Language Model (LLM) agents. When these agents develop inconsistent conventions, coordination can break down. Applications such as collaborative coding and distributed planning therefore require reliable, consistent communication, and scalability is a central concern as systems grow. We introduce Schema-Induced Games for Naming (SIGN), a naming game that examines how lightweight structure can steer convention formation. We compare schema-induced communication to unconstrained natural language and find faster convergence with up to 5.8× higher agreement. These results suggest that minimal structure can act as a simple control knob for efficient multi-agent coordination, pointing toward broader applications beyond the naming game. | 2025 | SAM2Flow: Interactive Optical Flow Estimation with Dual Memory for in vivo Microcirculation AnalysisabstractAnalysis of noninvasive microvascular blood flow can improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of many medical conditions, including cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, and sickle cell disease. This paper introduces SAM2Flow, an interactive optical flow estimation model to analyze long Oblique Back-illumination Microscopy (OBM) videos of *in vivo* microvascular flow. Inspired by the Segment Anything Model (SAM2), SAM2Flow enables users to specify regions of interest through user prompts for focused flow estimation.
SAM2Flow also incorporates a dual memory attention mechanism, comprising both motion and context memory, to achieve efficient and stable flow estimations over extended video sequences. According to our experiments, SAM2Flow achieves SOTA accuracy in foreground optical flow estimation on both microvascular flow and public datasets, with a fast inference speed of over $20$ fps on $512\times512$ inputs. Based on the temporally robust flow estimation, SAM2Flow demonstrated superior performance in downstream physiological applications compared to existing models. The code and dataset will be published with this paper. Luojie Huang, Ryan Zhang, Marisa Morakis, Michaela Taylor-Williams, Gregory N. McKay, Nicholas J. Durr |

| 2025 | MESS+: Dynamically Learned Inference-Time LLM Routing in Model Zoos with Service Level GuaranteesabstractOpen-weight large language model (LLM) zoos provide access to numerous high-quality models, but selecting the appropriate model for specific tasks remains challenging and requires technical expertise. Most users simply want factually correct, safe, and satisfying responses without concerning themselves with model technicalities, while inference service providers prioritize minimizing operating costs. These competing interests are typically mediated through service level agreements (SLAs) that guarantee minimum service quality.
We introduce MESS+, a stochastic optimization algorithm for cost-optimal LLM request routing while providing rigorous SLA compliance guarantees. MESS+ learns request satisfaction probabilities of LLMs in real-time as users interact with the system, based on which model selection decisions are made by solving a per-request optimization problem. Our algorithm includes a novel combination of virtual queues and request satisfaction prediction, along with a theoretical analysis of cost optimality and constraint satisfaction.
Across a wide range of state-of-the-art LLM benchmarks, MESS+ achieves an average of $2\times$ cost savings compared to existing LLM routing techniques. Herbert Woisetschlaeger, Ryan Zhang, Shiqiang Wang 0001, Hans-Arno Jacobsen |

| 2022 | Histokt: Cross Knowledge Transfer in Computational PathologyabstractThe lack of well-annotated datasets in computational pathology (CPath) obstructs the application of deep learning techniques for classifying medical images. Many CPath workflows involve transferring learned knowledge between various image domains through transfer learning. Currently, most transfer learning research follows a model-centric approach, tuning network parameters to improve transfer results over few datasets. In this paper, we take a data-centric approach to the transfer learning problem and examine the existence of generalizable knowledge between histopathological datasets. First, we create a standardization workflow for aggregating existing histopathological data. We then measure inter-domain knowledge by training ResNet18 models across multiple histopathological datasets, and cross-transferring between them to determine the quantity and quality of innate shared knowledge. Additionally, we use weight distillation to share knowledge between models without additional training. We find that hard to learn, multi-class datasets benefit most from pretraining, and a two stage learning framework incorporating a large source domain such as ImageNet allows for better utilization of smaller datasets. Furthermore, we find that weight distillation enables models trained on purely histopathological features to outperform models using external natural image data. Ryan Zhang, Jiadai Zhu, Mahdi S.
