2026 A Hybrid Multipopulation Algorithm for Efficient Analog Circuit Optimization
abstract
As the complexity of analog circuit optimization problems increases, existing optimization algorithms struggle with intricate circuit specifications. In this paper, we propose a hybrid multi-population evolutionary algorithm framework that integrates and enhances GA, DE, and PSO. We introduce a dynamic fitness function to address multi-constraint, multi-objective problems, and design a beta-distribution-based crossover operator with grouping to handle correlations between design variables and the highly nonlinear, locally sensitive nature of circuit metrics. Additionally, we implement an asymmetric crowding mechanism that considers nominal variables to maintain population diversity and develop a multi-population cooperation strategy to improve both convergence speed and solution quality. Our framework is validated on four analog circuits: a Low Dropout Regulator, a Two-Stage Amplifier, a Four-Stage Amplifier, and a Rail-to-rail Class AB Amplifier. Results demonstrate that our algorithm achieves faster convergence and superior solutions, leading to better performance of analog circuits and significant improvements in key multi-objective metrics such as hypervolume (HV) and dominance coverage. These confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework in solving complex analog circuit optimization problems.

2023 Deliberating with AI: Improving Decision-Making for the Future through Participatory AI Design and Stakeholder Deliberation
abstract
Research exploring how to support decision-making has often used machine learning to automate or assist human decisions. We take an alternative approach for improving decision-making, using machine learning to help stakeholders surface ways to improve and make fairer decision-making processes. We created "Deliberating with AI", a web tool that enables people to create and evaluate ML models in order to examine strengths and shortcomings of past decision-making and deliberate on how to improve future decisions. We apply this tool to a context of people selection, having stakeholders---decision makers (faculty) and decision subjects (students)---use the tool to improve graduate school admission decisions. Through our case study, we demonstrate how the stakeholders used the web tool to create ML models that they used as boundary objects to deliberate over organization decision-making practices. We share insights from our study to inform future research on stakeholder-centered participatory AI design and technology for organizational decision-making.

2023 Explainable Convolutional Neural Networks Driven Knowledge Mining for Seismic Facies Classification
abstract
Seismic facies analysis is a crucial foundation for basin-fill studies and oil and gas exploration. With its rapid development, CNN-assisted interpretation is becoming increasingly popular. However, CNN models are often considered "black boxes" that lack transparency. To understand how CNN models classify seismic facies and visualize the contribution of each seismic attribute to the final predictive scoring, we have investigated class activation map (CAM) techniques and an explainable tool called Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) value. Based on real seismic data collected in the Sichuan basin, we compared the visualization performances of CAM and SHAP methods and found that the SHAP tool has better visualization capabilities than CAM methods, which only produce heat maps with positive values. Using SHAP values, we identified the importance of each seismic attribute and refined redundant attributes. This approach establishes a connection between seismic attributes and sedimentary environments and is a prime example of the capability of deep learning to discover knowledge beyond human experience. We applied the selected seismic attributes to generate a refined CNN model and compared it to the original CNN model, demonstrating the superiority of our proposed strategy. When we compared the predicted seismic facies using the refined CNN model based on SHAP features, the conventional K-means, SVM and Gaussian Naive Bayes methods, it is observed that our predicted map aligns well with geological knowledge with less prediction errors, demonstrating the effectiveness and feasibility of our developed strategy.

2022 Understanding Effects of Algorithmic vs. Community Label on Perceived Accuracy of Hyper-partisan Misinformation
abstract
Hyper-partisan misinformation has become a major public concern. In order to examine what type of misinformation label can mitigate hyper-partisan misinformation sharing on social media, we conducted a 4 (label type: algorithm, community, third-party fact-checker, and no label) X 2 (post ideology: liberal vs. conservative) between-subjects online experiment (N = 1,677) in the context of COVID-19 health information. The results suggest that for liberal users, all labels reduced the perceived accuracy and believability of fake posts regardless of the posts' ideology. In contrast, for conservative users, the efficacy of the labels depended on whether the posts were ideologically consistent: algorithmic labels were more effective in reducing the perceived accuracy and believability of fake conservative posts compared to community labels, whereas all labels were effective in reducing their belief in liberal posts. Our results shed light on the differing effects of various misinformation labels dependent on people's political ideology.
