2025 Meta-Learning Hyperparameters for Parameter Efficient Fine-Tuning
abstract
Training large foundation models from scratch for domain-specific applications is almost impossible due to data limits and long-tailed distributions — taking remote sensing (RS) as an example. Fine-tuning natural image pre-trained models on RS images is a straightforward solution. To reduce computational costs and improve performance on tail classes, existing methods apply parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) techniques, such as LoRA and AdaptFormer. However, we observe that fixed hyperparameters — such as intra-layer positions, layer depth, and scaling factors, can considerably hinder PEFT performance, as fine-tuning on RS images proves highly sensitive to these settings. To address this, we propose MetaPEFT, a method incorporating adaptive scalers that dynamically adjust module influence during fine-tuning. MetaPEFT dynamically adjusts three key factors of PEFT on RS images: module insertion, layer selection, and module-wise learning rates, which collectively control the influence of PEFT modules across the network. We conduct extensive experiments on three transfer-learning scenarios and five datasets in both RS and natural image domains. The results show that MetaPEFT achieves state-of-the-art performance in cross-spectral adaptation, requiring only a small amount of trainable parameters and improving tail-class accuracy significantly.1

2025 Synthesizing Multi-Person and Rare Pose Images for Human Pose Estimation
abstract
Human pose estimation (HPE) models underperform in recognizing rare poses because they suffer from data imbalance problems (i.e., there are few image samples for rare poses) in their training datasets. From a data perspective, the most intuitive solution is to synthesize data for rare poses. Specifically, the rule-based methods apply manual manipulations (such as Cutout and GridMask) to the existing data, so the limited diversity of the data constrains the model. An alternative method is to learn the underlying data distribution via deep generative models (such as ControlNet and HumanSD) and then sample “new data” from the distribution. This works well for generating frequent poses in common scenes, but suffers when applied to rare poses or complex scenes (such as multiple persons with overlapping limbs). In this paper, we aim to address the above two issues, i.e., rare poses and complex scenes, for person image generation. We propose a two-stage method. In the first stage, we design a controllable pose generator named PoseFactory to synthesize rare poses. This generator is specifically trained on augmented pose data, and each pose is labelled with its level of difficulty and rarity. In the second stage, we introduce a multi-person image generator named MultipGenerator. It is conditioned on multiple human poses and textual descriptions of complex scenes. Both stages are controllable in terms of the diversity of poses and the complexity of scenes. For evaluation, we conduct extensive experiments on three widely used datasets: MS-COCO, HumanArt, and OCHuman. We compare our method against traditional pose data augmentation and person image generation methods, and it demonstrates its superior performance both quantitatively and qualitatively.

2024 Learning De-Biased Representations for Remote-Sensing Imagery
abstract
Remote sensing (RS) imagery, which requires specialized satellites to collect and is difficult to annotate, suffers from data scarcity and class imbalance in certain spectrums. Due to their data scarcity, training large-scale RS models from scratch is unrealistic, and the alternative is to transfer pre-trained models by fine-tuning or a more data-efficient method LoRA. Due to class imbalance, transferred models exhibit strong bias, where features of the major class dominate over those of the minor class. In this paper, we propose debLoRA, a generic training approach that works with any LoRA variants to yield debiased features. It is an unsupervised learning approach that can diversify minor class features based on the shared attributes with major classes, where the attributes are obtained by a simple step of clustering. To evaluate it, we conduct extensive experiments in two transfer learning scenarios in the RS domain: from natural to optical RS images, and from optical RS to multi-spectrum RS images. We perform object classification and oriented object detection tasks on the optical RS dataset DOTA and the SAR dataset FUSRS. Results show that our debLoRA consistently surpasses prior arts across these RS adaptation settings, yielding up to 3.3 and 4.7 percentage points gains on the tail classes for natural $\to$ optical RS and optical RS $\to$ multi-spectrum RS adaptations, respectively, while preserving the performance on head classes, substantiating its efficacy and adaptability

2023 Towards Efficient Use of Multi-Scale Features in Transformer-Based Object Detectors
abstract
Multi-scale features have been proven highly effective for object detection but often come with huge and even prohibitive extra computation costs, especially for the recent Transformer-based detectors. In this paper, we propose Iterative Multi-scale Feature Aggregation (IMFA) - a generic paradigm that enables efficient use of multi-scale features in Transformer-based object detectors. The core idea is to exploit sparse multi-scale features from just a few crucial locations, and it is achieved with two novel designs. First, IMFA rearranges the Transformer encoder-decoder pipeline so that the encoded features can be iteratively updated based on the detection predictions. Second, IMFA sparsely samples scale-adaptive features for refined detection from just a few keypoint locations under the guidance of prior detection predictions. As a result, the sampled multi-scale features are sparse yet still highly beneficial for object detection. Extensive experiments show that the proposed IMFA boosts the performance of multiple Transformer-based object detectors significantly yet with only slight computational overhead.

2022 Fourier Document Restoration for Robust Document Dewarping and Recognition
abstract
State-of-the-art document dewarping techniques learn to predict 3-dimensional information of documents which are prone to errors while dealing with documents with irregular distortions or large variations in depth. This paper presents FDRNet, a Fourier Document Restoration Network that can restore documents with different distortions and improve document recognition in a reliable and simpler manner. FDRNet focuses on high-frequency components in the Fourier space that capture most structural information but are largely free of degradation in appearance. It dewarps documents by a flexible Thin-Plate Spline transformation which can handle various deformations effectively without requiring deformation annotations in training. These features allow FDRNet to learn from a small amount of simply labeled training images, and the learned model can dewarp documents with complex geometric distortion and recognize the restored texts accurately. To facilitate document restoration research, we create a benchmark dataset consisting of over one thousand camera documents with different types of geometric and photometric distortion. Extensive experiments show that FDRNet outperforms the state-of-the-art by large margins on both dewarping and text recognition tasks. In addition, FDRNet requires a small amount of simply labeled training data and is easy to deploy. The proposed dataset is available at https://sg-vilab.github.io/event/warpdoc/.

2022 Spectral Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Visual Recognition
abstract
Though unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) has achieved very impressive progress recently, it remains a great challenge due to missing target annotations and the rich discrepancy between source and target distributions. We propose Spectral UDA (SUDA), an effective and efficient UDA technique that works in the spectral space and can generalize across different visual recognition tasks. SUDA addresses the UDA challenges from two perspectives. First, it introduces a spectrum transformer (ST) that mitigates inter-domain discrepancies by enhancing domain-invariant spectra while suppressing domain-variant spectra of source and target samples simultaneously. Second, it introduces multi-view spectral learning that learns useful unsupervised representations by maximizing mutual information among multiple ST-generated spectral views of each target sample. Extensive experiments show that SUDA achieves superior accuracy consistently across different visual tasks in object detection, semantic segmentation and image classification. Additionally, SUDA also works with the transformer-based network and achieves state-of-the-art performance on object detection.
