A comparison of the yaw constraining performance of SCARA-tau parallel manipulator variants via screw theoryabstractThe SCARA-Tau parallel manipulator was derived with the objective to overcome the limited workspace-to-footprint ratio of the DELTA parallel manipulator while maintaining its many benefits. The SCARA-Tau family has later been extended and a large number of variants have been proposed. In this paper, we analyse four of these variants, which together encompass the main differences between all the proposed SCARA-Tau manipulators. The analysed manipulator variants utilise an identical arrangement of five of the six linkages connecting the actuated arms and the manipulated platform and exhibit the same input-output Jacobian. The normalised reciprocal product between the wrench of the sixth linkage and the twist of the platform occurring without this linkage provides a measure on how effectively the sixth linkage constrains the manipulated platform. A comparison of the manipulator variants with respect to this measure demonstrates each variants suitability for specific applications. Mats Isaksson, Kristan Marlow, Torgny Brogårdh, Anders P. | 2012 | A 5-DOF rotation-symmetric parallel manipulator with one unconstrained tool rotationabstractThis paper introduces a novel 5-DOF parallel manipulator with a rotation-symmetric arm system. The manipulator is unorthodox since one degree of freedom of its manipulated platform is unconstrained. Such a manipulator is still useful in a wide range of applications utilizing a rotation-symmetric tool. The manipulator workspace is analyzed for singularities and collisions. The rotation-symmetric arm system leads to a large positional workspace in relation to the footprint of the manipulator. With careful choice of structural parameters, the rotational workspace of the tool is also sizeable. Mats Isaksson, Torgny Brogårdh, Saeid Nahavandi

A kinematic error model for a parallel Gantry-Tau manipulatorabstractParallel robots are generally said to be more accurate but to have a smaller workspace compared to serial robots. With the Gantry-Tau robot, a parallel robot with a large, reconfigurable workspace was presented. This article tries to identify the maximum achievable end-effector positioning accuracy of the Gantry-Tau robot. To this end, a couple of new kinematic error models are presented and evaluated. The sources of the remaining positioning errors (0.09 mm) are discussed. Isolde Dressler, Torgny Brogårdh, Anders Robertsson

Improving the kinematic performance of the SCARA-Tau PKMabstractOne well acknowledged drawback of traditional parallel kinematic machines (PKMs) is that the ratio of accessible workspace to robot footprint is small for these structures. This is most likely a contributing reason why relatively few PKMs are used in industry today. The SCARA-Tau structure is a parallel robot concept designed with the explicit goal of overcoming this limitation and developing a PKM with a workspace similar to that of a serial type robot of the same size. This paper shows for the first time how a proposed variant of the SCARA-Tau PKM can improve the usability of this robot concept further by significantly reducing the dependence between tool platform position and orientation of the original concept. The inverse kinematics of the proposed variant is derived and a comparison is made between this structure and the original SCARA-Tau concept, both with respect to platform orientation changes and workspace. | 2010 | An extended friction model to capture load and temperature effects in robot jointsabstractFriction is the result of complex interactions between contacting surfaces in a nanoscale perspective. Depending on the application, the different models available are more or less suitable. Available static friction models are typically considered to be dependent only on relative speed of interacting surfaces. However, it is known that friction can be affected by other factors than speed. In this paper, static friction in robot joints is studied with respect to changes in joint angle, load torque and temperature. The effects of these variables are analyzed by means of experiments on a standard industrial robot. Justified by their significance, load torque and temperature are included in an extended static friction model. The proposed model is validated in a wide operating range, reducing the average error a factor of 6 when compared to a standard static friction model. | 2007 | Configuration Support and Kinematics for a Reconfigurable Gantry-Tau ManipulatorabstractAffordable and competitive industrial automation is of key importance for small and medium enterprises, in Europe and elsewhere. A key factor is the introduction of new robot automation concepts that ease fast deployment and extend available task repertoire. The Gantry-Tau manipulator is a new robot concept. In contrast to other parallel kinematic manipulators (PKMs), it has a large working range. The high stiffness makes it ideal for a wide range of tasks such as grinding, deburring, and cutting. An additional aspect of such a PKM is the modularity, which in this work has been studied in terms of possibilities for assembly and mechanical reconfiguration at the end-user site, integration of such a kinematically different robot with a standard industrial controller, and new needs for methods/tools to support simple (re)configuration. What is needed for fully utilizing the modularity of the concept in typical SME manufacturing scenarios? A range of software tools and methods were found to be useful and necessary for efficient engineering and integration. For experimental evaluation, a full-scale prototype robot was designed and built, the kinematic software was developed and integrated into the ABB kinematics software, robot CAD software was adapted to the configuration needs, and both simulations and physical experiments were carried out. Our findings make us believe that enhanced software tools should be integrated on a higher symbolic (or meta-) level to better support transformation of data and code generation, but also that the Gantry-Tau type of robot (with adequate software support) will bring a new dimension of flexibility into SME manufacturing. | 2007 | Benchmark of the 3-DOF Gantry-Tau Parallel Kinematic MachineabstractIn this paper the invited session and the 4 original contributions are described first. Then the details of the first paper in the invited session is presented. In this first paper a new method for calculating the dynamic stiffness (frequency response) of parallel kinematic machines (PKMs) with six links, or Hexapods, is presented. The method assumes that each link and universal joint can be described by a mass-spring-damper model and calculates the transfer function from a Cartesian force or torque to Cartesian position or orientation. The new method has been used to benchmark two versions of the Gantry-Tau PKM, a relatively new PKM which has been designed to achieve a large workspace to installation space ratio, while at the same time achieve higher static and dynamic stiffness compared to serial-type industrial robots. The benchmark results presented in this paper show that these goals can be achieved in large sections of the workspace envelope. The benchmark also shows that machining centre specifications can be met if the location and dimensions of the work objects are known at the design stage. | 2006 | Nonlinear Grey-box Identification of Linear Actuators Containing HysteresisabstractA new identification procedure for a linear actuator used in parallel kinematic manipulators has been developed. The actuator dynamics contain both hysteresis and backlash resulting in a highly nonlinear system. The results in this paper show that not only can a nonlinear model of the system be successfully identified from measurement data, but the model is also compact enough to be an ideal candidate for inclusion in a high-performance robot control system Johan Gunnar, Erik Wernholt, Geir Hovland, Torgny Brogårdh

Kinematic Error Calibration of the Gantry-Tau Parallel ManipulatorabstractThis paper presents a new error kinematic model containing twelve parameters for the three linear actuators of the Gantry-Tau parallel kinematic manipulator. Three different types of measurement equipment, laser interferometers, linear encoders and double-ball bars, can successfully be used to calibrate the linear actuators. A method for selecting an optimal set of Cartesian coordinates is presented and a small set of fifty coordinates have been found to be sufficient. The methods presented in this paper allow for a fast and easy set up calibration procedure of the Gantry-Tau after assembly and installation, which is a pre-requisite for flexible automation with parallel kinematic manipulators Iain Williams, Geir Hovland, Torgny Brogårdh

Collision-Free Workspace Design of the 5-Axis Gantry-Tau Parallel Kinematic MachineabstractThis paper describes the workspace of the 5-axis variant of the Gantry-Tau parallel manipulator. The 5-axis movements are achieved by extending the 3-axis Gantry-Tau with two linear telescope link actuators. A new analytic inverse kinematic solution for the 5-axis machine and an analysis of the collision-free zones of the machine are presented. The results show that by careful design of the manipulated platform, a collision-free 5-axis workspace can be achieved. The achievable re-orientation of 30 degrees in the entire workspace is large for a parallel kinematic machine Matthew Murray, Geir Hovland, Torgny Brogårdh
