| 2025 | Touch in the Wild: Learning Fine-Grained Manipulation with a Portable Visuo-Tactile GripperabstractHandheld grippers are increasingly used to collect human demonstrations due to their ease of deployment and versatility. However, most existing designs lack tactile sensing, despite the critical role of tactile feedback in precise manipulation. We present a portable, lightweight gripper with integrated tactile sensors that enables synchronized collection of visual and tactile data in diverse, real-world, and in-the-wild settings. Building on this hardware, we propose a cross-modal representation learning framework that integrates visual and tactile signals while preserving their distinct characteristics. The learning procedure allows the emergence of interpretable representations that consistently focus on contacting regions relevant for physical interactions. When used for downstream manipulation tasks, these representations enable more efficient and effective policy learning, supporting precise robotic manipulation based on multimodal feedback. We validate our approach on fine-grained tasks such as test tube insertion and pipette-based fluid transfer, demonstrating improved accuracy and robustness under external disturbances. | 2024 | Sim2Real Manipulation on Unknown Objects with Tactile-based Reinforcement LearningabstractUsing tactile sensors for manipulation remains one of the most challenging problems in robotics. At the heart of these challenges is generalization: How can we train a tactile-based policy that can manipulate unseen and diverse objects? In this paper, we propose to perform Reinforcement Learning with only visual tactile sensing inputs on diverse objects in a physical simulator. By training with diverse objects in simulation, it enables the policy to generalize to unseen objects. However, leveraging simulation introduces the Sim2Real transfer problem. To mitigate this problem, we study different tactile representations and evaluate how each affects real-robot manipulation results after transfer. We conduct our experiments on diverse real-world objects and show significant improvements over baselines. Our project page is available at https://tactilerl.github.io/. | 2024 | Robot Synesthesia: In-Hand Manipulation with Visuotactile SensingabstractExecuting contact-rich manipulation tasks necessitates the fusion of tactile and visual feedback. However, the distinct nature of these modalities poses significant challenges. In this paper, we introduce a system that leverages visual and tactile sensory inputs to enable dexterous in-hand manipulation. Specifically, we propose Robot Synesthesia, a novel point cloudbased tactile representation inspired by human tactile-visual synesthesia. This approach allows for the simultaneous and seamless integration of both sensory inputs, offering richer spatial information and facilitating better reasoning about robot actions. Comprehensive ablations are performed on how the integration of vision and touch can improve reinforcement learning and Sim2Real performance.
