| 2025 | From One to More: Contextual Part Latents for 3D GenerationabstractTo generate 3D objects, early research focused on multi-view-driven approaches relying solely on 2D renderings. Recently, the 3D native latent diffusion paradigm has demonstrated superior performance in 3D generation, because it fully leverages the geometric information provided in ground truth 3D data. Despite its fast development, 3D diffusion still faces three challenges. First, the majority of these methods represent a 3D object by one single latent, regardless of its complexity. This may lead to detail loss when generating 3D objects with multiple complicated parts. Second, most 3D assets are designed parts by parts, yet the current holistic latent representation overlooks the independence of these parts and their interrelationships, limiting the model's generative ability. Third, current methods rely on global conditions (e.g., text, image, point cloud) to control the generation process, lacking detailed controllability. Therefore, motivated by how 3D designers create a 3D object, we present a new part-based 3D generation framework, CoPart, which represents a 3D object with multiple contextual part latents and simultaneously generates coherent 3D parts. This part-based framework has several advantages, including: i) reduces the encoding burden of intricate objects by decomposing them into simpler parts, ii) facilitates part learning and part relationship modeling, and iii) naturally supports part-level control. Furthermore, to ensure the coherence of part latents and to harness the powerful priors from foundation models, we propose a novel mutual guidance strategy to fine-tune pre-trained diffusion models for joint part latent denoising. Benefiting from the part-based representation, we demonstrate that CoPart can support various applications including part-editing, articulated object generation, and mini-scene generation. Moreover, we collect a new large-scale 3D part dataset named Partverse from Objaverse through automatic mesh segmentation and subsequent human post-annotations. By training on the proposed dataset, CoPart achieves promising part-based 3D generation with high controllability. Project page: https://hkdsc.github.io/project/copart. | 2025 | From Gallery to Wrist: Realistic 3D Bracelet Insertion in VideosabstractInserting 3D objects into videos is a longstanding challenge in computer graphics with applications in augmented reality, virtual try-on, and video composition. Achieving both temporal consistency, or realistic lighting remains difficult, particularly in dynamic scenarios with complex object motion, perspective changes, and varying illumination. While 2D diffusion models have shown promise for producing photorealistic edits, they often struggle with maintaining temporal coherence across frames. Conversely, traditional 3D rendering methods excel in spatial and temporal consistency but fall short in achieving photorealistic lighting. In this work, we propose a hybrid object insertion pipeline that combines the strengths of both paradigms. Specifically, we focus on inserting bracelets into dynamic wrist scenes, leveraging the high temporal consistency of 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) for initial rendering and refining the results using a 2D diffusion-based enhancement model to ensure realistic lighting interactions. Our method introduces a shading-driven pipeline that separates intrinsic object properties (albedo, shading, reflectance) and refines both shading and sRGB images for photorealism. To maintain temporal coherence, we optimize the 3DGS model with multi-frame weighted adjustments. This is the first approach to synergize 3D rendering and 2D diffusion for video object insertion, offering a robust solution for realistic and consistent video editing. | 2024 | GenesisTex: Adapting Image Denoising Diffusion to Texture SpaceabstractWe present GenesisTex, a novel method for synthesizing textures for 3D geometries from text descriptions. GenesisTex adapts the pretrained image diffusion model to texture space by texture space sampling. Specifically, we maintain a latent texture map for each viewpoint, which is updated with predicted noise on the rendering of the corresponding viewpoint. The sampled latent texture maps are then decoded into a final texture map. During the sampling process, we focus on both global and local consistency across multiple viewpoints: global consistency is achieved through the integration of style consistency mechanisms within the noise prediction network, and low-level consistency is achieved by dynamically aligning latent textures. Finally, we apply reference-based inpainting and img2img on denser views for texture refinement. Our approach overcomes the limitations of slow optimization in distillation-based methods and instability in inpainting-based methods. Experiments on meshes from various sources demonstrate that our method surpasses the baseline methods quantitatively and qualitatively. Chenjian Gao, Boyan Jiang, Xinghui Li, Yingpeng Zhang |

| 2024 | 3D Reconstruction From a Single Sketch via View-Dependent Depth SamplingabstractReconstructing a 3D shape based on a single sketch image is challenging due to the inherent sparsity and ambiguity present in sketches. Existing methods lose fine details when extracting features to predict 3D objects from sketches. Upon analyzing the 3D-to-2D projection process, we observe that the density map, characterizing the distribution of 2D point clouds, can serve as a proxy to facilitate the reconstruction process. In this work, we propose a novel sketch-based 3D reconstruction model named SketchSampler. It initiates the process by translating a sketch through an image translation network into a more informative 2D representation, which is then used to generate a density map. Subsequently, a two-stage probabilistic sampling process is employed to reconstruct a 3D point cloud: first, recovering the 2D points (i.e., the x and y coordinates) by sampling the density map; and second, predicting the depth (i.e., the z coordinate) by sampling the depth values along the ray determined by each 2D point. Additionally, we convert the reconstructed point cloud into a 3D mesh for wider applications. To reduce ambiguity, we incorporate hidden lines in sketches. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach significantly outperforms other baseline methods. | 2023 | Bit Allocation using OptimizationabstractIn this paper, we consider the problem of bit allocation in Neural Video Compression (NVC). First, we reveal a fundamental relationship between bit allocation in NVC and Semi-Amortized Variational Inference (SAVI). Specifically, we show that SAVI with GoP (Group-of-Picture)-level likelihood is equivalent to pixel-level bit allocation with precise rate & quality dependency model. Based on this equivalence, we establish a new paradigm of bit allocation using SAVI. Different from previous bit allocation methods, our approach requires no empirical model and is thus optimal. Moreover, as the original SAVI using gradient ascent only applies to single-level latent, we extend the SAVI to multi-level such as NVC by recursively applying back-propagating through gradient ascent. Finally, we propose a tractable approximation for practical implementation. Our method can be applied to scenarios where performance outweights encoding speed, and serves as an empirical bound on the R-D performance of bit allocation. Experimental results show that current state-of-the-art bit allocation algorithms still have a room of $\approx 0.5$ dB PSNR to improve compared with ours. | 2022 | Flexible Neural Image Compression via Code EditingabstractNeural image compression (NIC) has outperformed traditional image codecs in rate-distortion (R-D) performance. However, it usually requires a dedicated encoder-decoder pair for each point on R-D curve, which greatly hinders its practical deployment. While some recent works have enabled bitrate control via conditional coding, they impose strong prior during training and provide limited flexibility. In this paper we propose Code Editing, a highly flexible coding method for NIC based on semi-amortized inference and adaptive quantization. Our work is a new paradigm for variable bitrate NIC, and experimental results show that our method surpasses existing variable-rate methods. Furthermore, our approach is so flexible that it can also achieves ROI coding and multi-distortion trade-off with a single decoder. Our approach is compatible to all NIC methods with differentiable decoder NIC, and it can be even directly adopted on existing pre-trained models. | 2022 | Multi-Sample Training for Neural Image CompressionabstractThis paper considers the problem of lossy neural image compression (NIC). Current state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods adopt uniform posterior to approximate quantization noise, and single-sample pathwise estimator to approximate the gradient of evidence lower bound (ELBO). In this paper, we propose to train NIC with multiple-sample importance weighted autoencoder (IWAE) target, which is tighter than ELBO and converges to log likelihood as sample size increases. First, we identify that the uniform posterior of NIC has special properties, which affect the variance and bias of pathwise and score function estimators of the IWAE target. Moreover, we provide insights on a commonly adopted trick in NIC from gradient variance perspective. Based on those analysis, we further propose multiple-sample NIC (MS-NIC), an enhanced IWAE target for NIC. Experimental results demonstrate that it improves SOTA NIC methods. Our MS-NIC is plug-and-play, and can be easily extended to neural video compression. Tongda Xu, Yan Wang 0080, Dailan He, Chenjian Gao, Han Gao 0012, Kunzan Liu, Hongwei Qin |
